Centre asks western states to ensure capacity tie-ups till FY2035, focus on smart metering and power islanding

Time of India13-05-2025

New Delhi: The ministry of power on Tuesday asked western region states to plan
capacity tie-ups
in line with the national
resource adequacy framework
up to FY2035 and to expedite installation of pre-paid smart meters in government premises by August 2025.
This was conveyed during the regional conference for western region states held in Mumbai in the presence of Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik, Goa Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, Gujarat Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai, and Madhya Pradesh Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar via video conference. Maharashtra Minister of State for Energy Meghana Sakore Bordikar also participated.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Power, state power secretaries and CMDs of central and state utilities were present.
The Power Secretary, Government of India, stressed the need for timely capacity tie-ups and development of inter- and intra-state
transmission infrastructure
through tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB), regulated tariff mechanism (RTM), budgetary support or asset monetization. He also called for immediate implementation of cybersecurity protocols and preparation of
power islanding
schemes by all states.
Union minister Manohar Lal emphasised the importance of ensuring resource adequacy and planning necessary storage through Pumped Storage Projects and Battery Energy Storage Systems. He said, 'We must enhance nuclear power generation capacity to 100 GW by 2047.' He also underlined the need for special green energy zones to enable progress toward net zero emissions.
Highlighting the financial distress in the power distribution sector, the minister said that high
AT&C losses
, non-cost reflective tariffs, and delays in government dues and subsidies have strained DISCOMs. He urged states to ensure timely subsidy payments and implement
smart metering
infrastructure under the RDSS.
He said Gujarat, Goa and Chhattisgarh have made progress in reducing AT&C losses and added that states must prioritise prepaid smart meter installation in government offices and colonies, aiming for completion by August 2025.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Maharashtra is focusing on improving power reliability and has plans to reduce AT&C losses, and sought central government assistance in restructuring DISCOM debts.
The conference concluded with states requesting continued central government support to further improve the power sector.

With AIADMK Back, Amit Shah Charts Course To Dismantle DMK In Tamil Nadu Polls

Last Updated: While addressing a rally in Madurai, Shah took a jibe at Stalin and said that Tamil Nadu chief minister rightly says that he (Shah) cannot defeat the DMK. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday vowed to end Chief Minister MK Stalin rule in Tamil Nadu and asserted that BJP is going to form a government in the state. Riding high on confidence on the back of the BJP's recent election wins in Odisha, Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi, Shah vowed the saffron party will also be successful in defeating their rivals in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal next year, and form government. While addressing a rally in Madurai, Shah took a jibe at Stalin and said that Tamil Nadu chief minister rightly says that he (Shah) cannot defeat the DMK. This is because the people of Tamil Nadu would hand a loss to the DMK in the assembly elections next year. 'The NDA government of the BJP-AIADMK alliance will be formed here in 2026. I live in Delhi, but my ears are always on Tamil Nadu. MK Stalin says that Amit Shah cannot defeat DMK. He is right. It's not me, but the people of Tamil Nadu will defeat you," he said as quoted by news agency ANI. #WATCH | Madurai, Tamil Nadu | Union Home Minister Amit Shah says, 'The NDA government of the BJP-AIADMK alliance will be formed here in 2026. 'I apologise to my BJP workers of Tamil Nadu as I cannot talk to them in one of the greatest languages of India – Tamil," he said. The Union Minister further demanded the Staling government that the medical and engineering be taught in the Tamil language soon. 'I want to repeat my demand from the Tamil Nadu government that medical and engineering be taught in the Tamil language soon. PM Modi respected Tamil Nadu by installing Sengol in parliament, and I expect MK Stalin to write a letter to the PM to thank him for it," he said. Shah further launched a scathing attack on DMK saying that it crossed all limits of corruption in the last four years of its tenure. 'The DMK government in Tamil Nadu has crossed all limits of corruption. They committed a huge scam by handing over the Rs 450 crore nutrition kits provided by the Central government to a private company, and deprived the poor of food," Shah alleged while addressing party workers. He also claimed that the state government also committed a sand mining scam to the tune of Rs 4,600 crore, causing poor people of the state to buy sand at inflated prices just to help the ruling party to mint money. BJP-AIADMK Alliance After two years, the BJP and the AIADMK have formed an alliance again to contest the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for next year. The BJP and AIADMK contested together in the 2021 Tamil Nadu elections when Palaniswami was the Chief Minister. However, the NDA lost the elections to DMK and its alliance partners, only managing to win 75 seats out of 234 constituencies. The AIADMK won 66 seats, while the BJP managed only four seats. The two parties went solo in the Lok Sabha and failed to win a single seat in Tamil Nadu. However, the BJP's vote share in the state increased significantly under K Annamalai's leadership. Maha: Fadnavis releases entrepreneur Dr Chaudhary's book in Pune

Pune, June 8 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday released Dr Pramod Chaudhary's book, "Pailatiravarun... Tar As Zhaal", which chronicles the latter's entrepreneurial journey. Speaking at the book release ceremony held at auditorium of COEP Technological University, the Chief Minister praised Dr Chaudhary's work in the ethanol sector, describing it as a form of national service by a visionary entrepreneur. He recalled that when the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government was at the Centre, the initiative to increase the ethanol blending percentage had begun, however, in the midst the Vajpayee government left office, causing the topic to be put on the backburner and delaying the ethanol mission. After the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014, the ethanol topic gained momentum again, he said and pointed that Dr Chaudhary reviewed the ethanol policy, provided suggestions that were incorporated into it and since 2017-18, progress has accelerated. He noted that blending 20 percent ethanol with petrol has resulted in savings of over Rs one lakh crore in foreign exchange and informed that ethanol is being used in aviation fuel and predicted that vehicles will run on biofuels in the future. Fadnavis highlighted the potential for creating a policy to make current plastics biodegradable, which could lead to the development of industries based on this technology. He mentioned that Dr Chaudhary had prepared a report on creating a Compressed Biogas (CBG) project using agricultural waste, rice waste and Mahua flower waste in Gadchiroli. The state government would develop a policy to promote the development of the Gadchiroli district based on Dr Chaudhary's report, he added. UNI SP SS
