Thailand embraces the rainbow economy as Pride Month sparks growth

Thailand is among several countries expected to benefit from positive sentiment surrounding the rainbow economy during the Pride Month celebrations in June.
The rainbow economy is experiencing rapid and powerful expansion, particularly in the tourism, entertainment, and lifestyle sectors. This growth is largely driven by the LGBTQIAN+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, non-binary) community, which is estimated to comprise between 400 and 800 million people worldwide, accounting for 5-10 per cent of the global population.
Globally, the LGBTQ+ travel market is projected to be worth approximately US$357 billion (S$460 billion) by 2025, with potential growth reaching US$604.34 billion by 2032, according to estimates from Coherent Market Insights.
A survey by Gallup found that 22.3 per cent of Generation Z (born 1997-2012) in the United States identify as LGBTQIAN+, followed by Millennials (born 1981-1996) at 9.8 per cent, Generation X (born 1965-1980) at 4.5 per cent, Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) at 2.3 per cent, and the Silent Generation (born 1945 or earlier) at 1.1 per cent.
Many countries are showing increasing support for marriage equality. According to the 2023 Eurobarometer survey conducted by the European Commission, the level of support for same-sex marriage legislation across Europe is as follows:
Sweden: 94 per cent of the population supports legalising same-sex marriage across Europe
Netherlands: 94 per cent of the population supports it
Denmark: 93 per cent of the population supports it
In Thailand, there are more than six million members of the LGBTQIAN+ community, who are expected to generate over 150 billion baht annually, contributing to a 0.3 per cent increase in GDP, according to Mahidol University's College of Management.
Marriage equality legislation is anticipated to have positive effects on tourism and investment, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimating revenue from LGBTQIAN+ tourists to reach US$2 billion per year.
Meanwhile, Thammasat University estimates that Thailand's soft power—such as the popular Thai Girls' Love genre series—has gained worldwide recognition, amassing hundreds of millions of views and generating substantial revenue and cultural influence. With strong support, this genre is expected to generate up to 2 billion baht per year.
Furthermore, when assessing viewership figures for Thai Girls' Love series that have aired, the total number of views has reached as high as 800 million, driven by a vast global fan base.
'Thailand is recognised as the world's No 1 destination for gender-affirming surgery, with its medical tourism sector projected to reach 16 billion baht in value by 2025,' Mr Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, Chief Marketing Officer of Central Pattana said.
'At the same time, the country serves as an emotional safe space for the global LGBTQIAN+ community—particularly travellers from China, South Korea and the Middle East—who see Thailand as a hub of cultural celebration.'
To capitalise on these economic insights, Central Pattana recently launched Thailand's Pride Celebration 2025: 'Pride For All,' which will see Central shopping centres across the country transformed into inclusive spaces that champion self-expression and equality.
Mr Nattakit expects that throughout the month of June, around 1.3 million people will participate in events across all shopping centres nationwide, an increase from 1 million in 2024. THE NATION/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Singapore operator of China's first foreign-owned hospital seeks more medical tourists

PERENNIAL HOLDINGS PTE LTD BEIJING – A Singapore hospital operator wants more international patients to seek treatment at its new medical centre in China, as foreign healthcare providers eye medical tourism as a new growth area in the world's second-largest economy. Perennial Holdings' US$139 million (S$179 million) hospital opened earlier in 2025 in the northern city of Tianjin, and is the first fully foreign-owned medical facility in the mainland. The hospital aims to derive 30 per cent of its revenue during its first year of operation from patients visiting from Russia to the Middle East and South-east Asia – hoping China will become an emerging destination for medical tourism that can compete with established regional rivals Singapore, Thailand and Japan. Perennial's focus on luring overseas patients to Tianjin came after China in 2024 moved to allow private hospitals to be fully owned by foreign entities, which had previously needed a Chinese business partner. China's health regulator has since encouraged the Tianjin facility to differentiate itself from the country's public hospitals, hospital president Daniel Liu said in an interview this week. 'Medical tourism has yet to become an industry in China, but it's showing promise. We hope to make the pie bigger,' he said. 'Some specialities in the Chinese healthcare system have grown in the past two decades, to a point that measures up to international standards.' Private healthcare providers have faced headwinds operating in China as the country's post-Covid economic slump weighed on their main clientele – expats and well-off domestic customers with commercial insurance coverage. Some private hospitals and clinics have closed shop in recent months, while others have had to lower their prices, according to local media. China can be appealing to medical tourists in part due to a speedier diagnosis and treatment process that can get slowed down by rigid referral systems and a lack of resources in other countries. Still, luring global patients to China for treatment – especially when it comes to entering the country – still faces hurdles. China doesn't currently have a visa option for medical tourism, and the visa-free programme it's rolled out to more than 40 countries sometimes only grants stays of under a month – too short for some patients needing to undergo surgery and subsequent recovery. Earlier in 2025, hospital chiefs and medical experts proposed creating a new visa for medical tourism at China's annual parliamentary session. The move to expand medical tourism also dovetails with Beijing's goal to encourage more inbound travel. Some northeast China hospitals are already frequented by patients from neighbouring Russia, while southern provinces are welcoming patients from South-east Asia as access to Chinese medical care becomes part of the government's tourism push, state agency Xinhua reported. Perennial's Tianjin hospital is even hoping to bring in patients from as far as the UK, where private care is pricey and long waiting lists for the National Health Service have delayed treatments and even diagnoses of certain conditions. To meet future demand from international clients, Perennial is working to recruit medical stuff from Singapore and finalize global medical insurance coverage, Mr Liu said. US-China at trade impasse as Trump's steel tariff hike strains ties
[WASHINGTON] US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday it is 'extremely hard' to reach a deal with China over a trade impasse that has roiled global markets, while his doubling of metal tariffs fueled tensions with key partners. Trump's latest salvos came as ministers from Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries gathered in Paris to discuss the world economy's outlook in light of the trade war. The US leader's sweeping duties on allies and adversaries have strained ties with trading partners and sparked a flurry of negotiations. The White House has suggested Trump will speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, raising hopes they can soothe tensions and speed up a trade deal between the world's two biggest economies. But early on Wednesday, Trump appeared to dampen hopes for a quick resolution. 'I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!' he posted on his Truth Social platform. China was the biggest target of Trump's April tariff blitz, hit with additional levies of 145 per cent on its goods as both sides engaged in tit-for-tat escalation. China's countermeasures on US goods reached 125 per cent. Both sides agreed to temporarily lower rates in May, while Trump delayed most sweeping measures on other countries until July 9. US neighbours incensed Trump's remarks came hours after he increased tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from 25 per cent to 50 per cent on Wednesday, raising pressure on key trading partners, while exempting Britain from the higher levy for now. The move drew sharp rebukes from immediate neighbours Canada and Mexico, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum vowing countermeasures if Trump did not grant tariff relief. Mexico will request an exemption from the higher metals tariff, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney blasted the levies as unjustified and illegal, adding that his country would respond. Trump's tariffs have fanned worries among Canada's workers. Ron Wells, president of United Steelworkers Local 1005 expressed concern that Canadian steel company Stelco could see significant parts of its orders dry up, impacting staff. The union's members who work at the company want to see the tariffs situation resolved, he told AFP. 'People are just pissed off that (Trump) keeps changing his mind and he's playing chicken with the economy,' Wells said. Tensions could surge further in the coming weeks, with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick opening the door on Wednesday to potential tariffs on imported commercial aircraft and parts. US-EU talks 'advancing' The United States and European Union struck a more conciliatory note after talks on the sidelines of the OECD gathering. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said after talks with EU counterpart Maros Sefcovic that negotiations were 'advancing quickly.' Greer added that the meeting was 'very constructive and indicates a willingness by the EU to work with us to find a concrete way forward to achieve reciprocal trade.' EU goods will be hit with 50-per cent tariffs on July 9 unless the 27-nation bloc reaches a deal with Washington. The EU has vowed to retaliate. Sefcovic said the doubling of metal tariffs 'doesn't help the negotiations' but both sides were nonetheless 'making progress.' The US-EU meeting took place a day after the OECD cut its forecast for global economic growth, blaming Trump's tariffs for the downgrade. A report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office in Washington found Wednesday that Trump's tariffs would reduce the size of the US economy and fuel inflation, while lowering federal deficits. After talks Tuesday between UK Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Greer, London said US tariffs on metal imports from Britain remain at 25 per cent for now. Even after explosive run, European defence stocks may still have firepower left
[SINGAPORE] On Sunday (Jun 1), more than 100 Ukrainian drones, reportedly launched from deep in Russian territory, damaged or destroyed US$7 billion worth of Russian aircraft. That same day, Ukraine was struck by over 470 Russian drones and seven missiles, the heaviest barrage since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Less than a day later, negotiators from both sides met in Istanbul for peace talks – the first real attempt in months to halt a war that has become Europe's largest conflict since World War II. But with tensions on the boil, few are holding their breath for a breakthrough. If anything, following Sunday's salvos, the odds favour escalation. Among the various groups, one of them – the defence contractors – will not be complaining. Yes, it feels crass to talk about market gains while a war rages. But in the year to date, Western European defence stocks have delivered blowout returns. Sign Up Sign Up Germany's Rheinmetall – a leading manufacturer of armoured vehicles and large-calibre ammunition – is up more than 200 per cent in the year to date as at Wednesday. Italy's Leonardo has surged more than 103 per cent, and Sweden's Saab has similarly climbed over 109 per cent. In contrast, the broader Stoxx 600 is up a comparatively miserly 7 per cent. The surge is hardly surprising. With Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces looming from afar, European governments are increasingly taking defence into their own hands. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump's erratic tariff threats and open disdain for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) have also made it riskier for Europe to rely too heavily on American support – or American-made arms. These geopolitical shifts have already prompted concrete actions. In March, German lawmakers voted to exempt defence spending from the country's strict fiscal rules. That same month, French President Emmanuel Macron called for European military expenditure to rise to 3 to 3.5 per cent of gross domestic product – well above the Nato target of 2 per cent. Still room to run? The question now is whether investors have missed the party. Can defence stocks climb even higher from here? Probably. European Nato members spent a third of their defence budgets on equipment last year, up from 15 per cent in 2014, according to a Feb 27 report by Goldman Sachs Research economists Niklas Garnadt and Filippo Taddei. Crucially, most of that spend stays local. Between 2005 and 2022, an average of 90 per cent of France's defence purchases came from domestic firms, the economists wrote. The figure is 80 per cent for Germany and 70 per cent for Italy. That means national champions such as Dusseldorf-based Rheinmetall are well-placed to scoop up new orders – especially if the war grinds on or spreads beyond Ukraine. Indeed, Rheinmetall expects revenue to grow by up to 30 per cent in the 2025 financial year, with operating margins exceeding 15 per cent. The earnings guidance, published on Apr 28, does not yet factor in potential upside from recent geopolitical developments, the company noted – though it did not specify what those developments were. But what about valuation? There is one obvious red flag: price. As at Wednesday, Rheinmetall was trading at a trailing price-earnings ratio of 93.89 times – far above its US peers such as Lockheed Martin (17.53), RTX (24.01) or Northrop Grumman (21.16), according to Bloomberg data. Other national champions, such as the UK's BAE Systems (30.14) and France's Thales (54.59), were also trading at comparatively pricier valuations than their American peers. Still, for investors betting on the unfortunate logic of endless conflict and nationalist spending, high valuations may be a feature, not a bug. As long as Europe re-arms and the US retreats into itself, the money must go somewhere – and that 'somewhere' is increasingly Europe's own backyard. For those of us who have yet to board this metaphorical tank, it may not be too late.
