Jetour to launch more new models after strong start in SA
In August, global subsidiary of the Chery group, Jetour, will celebrate its first anniversary in the country after launching the Dashing and X70 Plus SUV models last year.
We spoke to Jetour SA vice-president Nic Campbell about how things have progressed.
I mentioned seeing a lot more Dashing models along my daily route in the south of Johannesburg, and it checks out.
'I'm not surprised. The Vereeniging branch is doing exceedingly well for us,' said Campbell, adding in June Jetour sold 683 new cars across the country.
Jetour started reporting its sales numbers to Naamsa in January 2025 and moves about 500 new units per month on average.
What separates his brand from alternatives?
The VP said competition is fierce and there are no longer poor or nominally specified models on sale, be they European, Japanese or Korean brands, only a different ethos of operation and customer engagement. He said the initial dim view of Chinese vehicles by SA customers has changed to that of cautious willingness to explore, and they've never had as much choice for vehicles.

Campbell said his company has focused on giving good experiences through its product offerings, pricing and after sales service, and the brand's success during the first year can be attributed to the trust developed between Jetour and dealer partners, and the planning ahead.
Jetour's first steps into SA began not with selling cars but setting up a network of dealers and a state of the art warehouse to provide a speedy response to service workshops, which earned the brand a Gold Status win in the 2025 National Automobile Dealers' Association dealer satisfaction index survey.
Campbell said new Jetour subsidiaries being set up in the Southern African Development Community region to import cars and parts from Jetour SA will bolster local sales. Botswana is sourcing cars from South Africa and others will join in soon.
He said there has been a delay in broadening the product offering caused by global demand that interrupted the planned debuts of the Jetour T1 and T2 ranges. The T1 is a 4,705mm long, five-seat family SUV that competes with alternatives, including the Renault Duster.
The T2 is 93mm shorter with a more upright, Land Rover Defender-esque styling and a similar off-road driving disposition. It will compete with the GWM Tank 300 and BAIC B40 as prime examples.
My walkabout at the company's parts warehouse in Waterfall, Midrand, this week revealed parts boxes labelled T1 and T2, confirming the VP's commitment for an October 2025 debut for the new pair.
With South Africa a changed landscape from when Jetour arrived in 2024, with new buyer trends, a struggling economy and US-imposed import tariffs, does Campbell support the call that more Chinese brands should start to assemble cars locally to safeguard the local automotive industry?
He said there are no plans to build Jetour cars locally, and he is aware of unconfirmed reports claiming group brand Chery has been looking at taking over Nissan's plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria. However, Campbell said plans to manufacture locally need a viable export programme.
Jetour SA supports the local industry through partnerships with local suppliers of aftermarket accessories such as tow bars, and Campbell said he would be willing to support the three remaining tyre manufacturing companies operating in the country after Goodyear announced its exit.

'Customer tyre brand loyalties dictate and Jetour cars arrive with fitted rubber from the primary source in Wuhu City, China,' he said.
Jetour's car line-up is powered by petrol engines, but Campbell said the electrification of Jetour products is in the pipeline and the company's first plug-in-hybrid derivative in South Africa is not far off, though he would not be drawn into sharing more details.
In the meantime, customers can expect the arrival of Dashing and X70 Plus models with updated features soon, along with the new Jetour T1 and T2.

Mazda CX-30 remains a chic and dependable crossover pick
There is plenty of uncertainty surrounding the fate of legacy carmakers in the current climate. That stems from the powerful emergence of the Chinese automotive industry as a disruptor that has become tough to beat by offering customers a great deal for less outlay and across most segments. The monthly figures speak for themselves. Very soon we might see brands from China edging in on the turf of the most beloved local staples, such as Volkswagen and Toyota. They have outpaced marques that were once regular features in the top half of the monthly new vehicle sales charts. That includes Mazda. However, where proven reliability and longevity is concerned, legacy carmakers such as Mazda continue to have the upper-hand. While the oldest Chinese carmaker in South Africa is just shy of turning 18, a brand such as Mazda has been involved in Mzansi for decades. It has proven itself to be a purveyor of durable cars and, in more recent times, offerings that sought to elevate its persona with sharper designs and build quality that some have likened to German standards. A Mazda CX-30 recently arrived for evaluation, looking quite rakish in a shade of blue. The crossover was first launched in 2020 as a bridge between buyers who found the CX-3 too compact and the CX-5 too large. Mazda is not one for radical changes during a product life cycle, so aside from subtle tweaks from trim and equipment standpoints, the CX-30 seen here is much the same as the model launched about five years ago. That is a considerable length of time in modern motoring terms, but the sleek, curvaceous aesthetic appeal of the model remains as desirable as it was then. Pricing ranges from R531,800 for the basic Active version while R579,400 gets you into the Dynamic grade. The Carbon Edition, with its dark accents, is R597,800 and the range-topping Individual we tested costs R641,900. Pricing includes a five-year/unlimited mileage warranty and service plan. On the outside, the 18-inch, glossy black alloys are the biggest differentiation of the Individual versus its lesser siblings. The cabin is distinguished by a delicious two-tone colour combination: toffee for the leatherette bolsters, suede-like upholstery for the seat inners and door panels. One is reminded where the comparisons to Teutonic cabin finishes originate from. Behind the wheel of a CX-30 materials are of an excellent standard, from the soft-touch fascia to the grip of the elegant three-spoke steering wheel. The doors of the Mazda are on the light side, but concerns about occupants safety are assuaged by the fitment of seven airbags and the credentials of a five-star EuroNCAP rating. Some may lament the slightly dated look of the cabin, but traditionalists will enjoy the blend of analogue with digital. The instrument cluster, for example, has classic needles and gauges for the tachometer and fuel level, complemented by a central screen handling speed and other data. Atop the fascia is a slim infotainment screen that blends appealingly, a nice break from the stark, oversized tablets that look as though they were stuck on as an afterthought. Being the top tier expression of the CX-30 range, the standard equipment level is high and outfitted with amenities including a sunroof, Bose audio system and electrically-operated tailgate. Annoyingly, the navigation system requires an SD card, which was not present in our test unit. The vehicle's 295l boot is on the shallow side. Road manners are of a respectable texture, with good marks for sound insulation and light but direct steering. There are some compromises where ride quality is concerned, attributed to the 18-inch alloys, in tandem with suspension tuning that is decidedly firm. Drive is to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic. Where Mazda could be criticised for lagging behind is in the powertrain department. The CX-30 used a 2.0l, four-cylinder petrol engine which is naturally-aspirated. This is the 121kW/213Nm unit that has served in Mazda products for many years and has an industrial, appliance-like quality. On one hand, the long-lasting potential and easy maintenance of such a simple, uncomplicated motor is a positive. On the other hand the performance boost and economy of adopting turbocharger technology is hard to argue with. Rivals such as Toyota have found a satisfying middle ground with hybridisation. The CX-30 could certainly benefit from such progress. Average consumption over our week of testing was 8.5l/100km. While it might not be at the forefront of technological innovation, the CX-30 remains a stylish and proven prospect from a brand with a sound reputation.

Tesla sales drop in Sweden, Denmark and France for seventh straight month
Sales of new Tesla cars in Sweden, Denmark and France fell in July for the seventh straight month as the EV maker struggles with a backlash to CEO Elon Musk's political views, regulatory challenges and competition from European and Chinese brands. Tesla's aging lineup is facing a wave of low cost EV rivals, specially from China. It is rolling out a revamped Model Y and starting to produce a new, cheaper model, but production of that will only ramp up next quarter, later than initially expected. The brand's sales were down 86% year-on-year in July to 163 cars in Sweden, 52% to 336 cars in Denmark and 27% to 1,307 cars in France, official industry data showed, after dropping by more than a third in Europe in the first six months of the year. With no more affordable end vehicles on the horizon until the last three months of the year and the upcoming end of a $7,500 (R136,940) US tax break for EV buyers, Musk acknowledged in July that Tesla could have "a few rough quarters". He said tough automated driving regulations in Europe made it harder to sell the Model Y in some countries as the vehicle's optional supervised self-driving is "a huge selling point". "Our sales in Europe we think will improve significantly once we are able to give customers the same experience they have in the UD" he told analysts. Model Y registrations in Sweden and Denmark fell by 88% and 49% respectively in July. In June Tesla launched a trial robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, using about a dozen Model Y SUVs controlled by its autonomous-driving software. However, the roll-out of its self-driving features elsewhere in the US is bogged down because it hasn't received the required permits. Overall car sales slid 8% in France and were up 20% in Denmark and 6% in Sweden in July, the industry data showed. Other European countries, including Italy, Norway and Spain, are expected to release July car sales data later on Friday.

Nintendo quarterly revenue surges thanks to Switch 2
The Switch 2 smashed industry records by selling 3.5 million units in its first four days, and Nintendo said Friday it had shifted around 5.8 million consoles in its first month. Image: File Nintendo on Friday said quarterly revenue had more than doubled year-on-year thanks to the Switch 2, which became the world's fastest-selling console after its launch in June. Pent-up demand for the new gadget from the "Super Mario" gamemaker fuelled fan excitement at the release, which saw sold-out pre-orders and midnight store openings. The Switch 2 smashed industry records by selling 3.5 million units in its first four days, and Nintendo said Friday it had shifted around 5.8 million consoles in its first month. "Net sales increased significantly in the first quarter, due mainly to the launch of Nintendo Switch 2," the Japanese company said as it reported a 132% on-year jump in sales for the April-June quarter to 572 billion yen ($3.8 billion). Net profit in the quarter was up 19% on-year. "The launch of Switch 2 has surpassed many people's expectations," and it will be hard for another console to match its strong start, gaming industry consultant Serkan Toto told AFP. "Nintendo should be able to comfortably ride on this momentum through the holidays and into 2026," although a key challenge will be maintaining a consistent supply of popular games, he said. The company says it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 units by the end of March 2026, a target it left unchanged on Friday. Although the Japanese gamemaker is diversifying into hit movies and theme parks, console hardware remains the core of its business. The Switch 1, a hybrid console that can be used on-the-go or connected to a television, soared in popularity during the pandemic with hit games such as "Animal Crossing". It has sold 152 million units since its 2017 release, making it the third best-selling console of all time after Sony's PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS. Video Player is loading. It is also more expensive than its predecessor, at $449.99 in the United States, compared to a launch price of $299.99 for the original Switch. The postponed launch of the hugely anticipated "Grand Theft Auto VI" by US publisher Rockstar Games from this year to May 2026 will also be a bright point, Toto said. "If GTA6 launched this year, it would have sucked almost all the oxygen out of the room and made marketing Switch 2 definitely harder for Nintendo," Toto said. AFP
