Six private cars used as taxis, 12 bike taxis seized in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Transport department officials on Saturday seized six own-board (white number plate) cars used as taxis and 12 bike taxis and imposed a total fine of Rs 1.80 lakh on them. Based on complaints about illegal taxis and bike taxis in the city, joint transport commissioner N Alagarasu instructed transport department officials to conduct surprise inspections. A team of officials, headed by RTO A S Viswanathan, conducted inspections and seized six cars and 12 bike taxes which were found operating without valid permits. Viswanathan said a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on each vehicle. He cautioned that car owners should not rent out their vehicles without the proper permit. People should avoid opting for cars that are not permitted, he added. "Such special drives will continue, and stringent action will be taken against all vehicles found misusing permits in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act ," he said. 'Commercial vehicles must undergo an annual fitness check, pay permit fees and renew their permit every five years. In contrast, private vehicles do not require a fitness certificate for the first 15 years, and their insurance costs are lower. Because of this, some people rent out their private cars illegally at rates cheaper than those offered by registered companies,' said an official with the transport department. Industry body ISMA backs ethanol-blending programme, dismisses misinformation

The Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has strongly defended the country's ethanol-blending programme amid 'misleading' claims from some quarters about its impact on vehicle engines. In a statement, ISMA said the E20 fuel blend, 20 per cent ethanol mixed with petrol, has undergone rigorous testing by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and has been certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) as fully compatible with Indian vehicles. Automobile manufacturers are already producing E20-compliant models, the association noted. Referring to Brazil's decades-long use of ethanol blends from E20 to E100 without major issues, ISMA highlighted that the South American nation currently blends over 27 per cent ethanol in petrol and is targeting 30 per cent by 2030. "Ethanol-blended fuel is not just a technological choice--it is a national imperative. Backed by rigorous scientific validation and decades of global experience, it delivers clear benefits for our farmers, our economy, and our environment," ISMA Director General Deepak Ballsaid in the statement. From an economic perspective, the ethanol blending programme has become a "game changer" for over five crore sugarcane farmers , with more than Rs 1.18 lakh crore transferred to them. ISMA argued that the blending of ethanol with petrol improved the financial health of sugar mills, ensured timely payments to farmers, and helped manage excess sugar inventories, ultimately stabilising sugarcane prices and protecting farmer incomes. The E20 target is also expected to save Rs 35,000-40,000 crore in foreign exchange annually by reducing crude oil imports, which account for over 85 per cent of India's consumption. "The recent negative campaign on social media against ethanol-blended fuels is not only misleading but also detrimental to a nationally important programme," the ISMA statement noted. Earlier this week, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had also dismissed recent claims circulating on social media that E20 petrol causes a drastic drop in fuel efficiency , besides impacting the engines. The ministry clarified that while ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, the impact on fuel efficiency is only marginal. In 2014, the ethanol blending was just 1.53 per cent. By 2022, India achieved 10 per cent blending, five months ahead of schedule. The original target of 20 per cent blending (E20) by 2030 was advanced to 2025 and has already been achieved in the current Ethanol Supply Year.

This Indian singer got inspired by Madhuri Dixit's husband Dr Nene, bought cars worth more than Rs 7 cr including a Lamborghini, Porsche

Every kid has always drawn a racecar, and every other kid has always wanted a Toyota Supra while growing up because of the Fast And Furious franchise. Some realise their dreams of owning their favourite cars, and Bollywood singer Stebin Ben is one of the lucky ones. Known for songs like 'Baarish Ban Jaana', 'Sahiba', and 'Thodha Thodha Pyaar', Ben has amassed over 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify and 640k subscribers. The numbers have certainly brought in a comfortable amount of money, since the singer has a garage with cars worth more than Rs 7 crore. Stebin recently appeared on an episode of History on Wheels by Mashable India, where he talked about his love for cars and how he slowly built his way up to buying his most expensive car to date. He said, 'I think for me it started as a kid, playing with scale models of cars and video games and just dreaming of owning those machines in real life. At the start of it, I just wanted to buy a Jaguar or a BMW car, and I stayed true to the promise I had made to myself, and I bought a 5 Series and a Jaguar XF right after that.' ALSO READ: 'AR Rahman loves clothes in strange colours,' Sukhwinder Singh opens up on his 'godfriend', why the composer makes his best music at 3am Talking about his current cars, the singer said, 'Right now I have an S-Class Maybach, a Lamborghini Urus, and a Porsche Boxster. I got all of them very recently. The Urus is for when I travel with my 'boys' and we all go for a drive. For me, the Porsche is a date night car. Honestly, the first time I saw a Lamborghini was a Gallardo, and then slowly I developed my liking for the car. In Mumbai, it's very difficult to drive two-seaters, and with this car you get the 'sports car' feel and the height, and it's obviously very comfortable.' He shared details about his first car and revealed what all he plans to buy in the future for his already impressive car collection. 'My first car was a Honda City ZX, which looked like a dolphin. I built my garage from there; the BMW came, then the Jaguar, and so on and so forth. But the next car I want is either the long wheelbase Phantom or the Ghost; that is on my radar now. I also want to have a Ferrari, either the 296 or the F8. Currently I am in the phase of learning and looking for new cars, and I saw your episode with Dr Nene, and it's so great to see someone being so passionate about their cars.' While some of the models and years are not clearly mentioned, Stebin's total garage value is more than 7.25 crore. According to CarDekho, the S-Class' current on-road price is Rs 1.9 cr, the Porsche Boxster is worth Rs 1.57 crore, and the Lamborghini Urus costs Rs 3.01 crore, making it the most expensive car he has ever bought. The Rolls Royce models that Stebin wishes to buy, the extended wheelbase version of the Phantom and the Ghost, are worth Rs 10.48 crore and Rs 10.19 crore.
