Rodgers aiming for big performance in first leg of 'huge' play-off tie

STV News3 days ago
Brendan Rodgers says Celtic will be looking to 'set their standards' in the first leg of their Champions League play-off and to get a good result to take over to Kazakhstan.
The Hoops take on Kairat Almaty for a place in Europe's top competition, and the manager is aiming for a good win at Parkhead to set themselves up for a daunting 7,000-mile trip to the Asian border.
Rodgers, who is hoping the Scottish champions can add to their squad before next week's first leg, admits they would have preferred to play Slovan Bratislava, who they beat comfortably in the league phase last season.
Kairat beat the Slovakian champions on penalties midweek and now stand between Celtic and another shot at the Champions League.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Rodgers said: 'If we're being honest, then everyone would have preferred the closer team, and not the longer journey. But it is what it is. We have been there before, and in the first leg we will want to make a real push to set our standards on that game, and then we will go over there the following week and look to qualify.
'It is such a huge game, and when it comes, we will be ready for it.
'When we get there, we will be prepared and ready.
'Hopefully, we can add to the team before then. We have right up until the night before the game to add to the squad, so we hope that can be the case.
'We hope that we can improve it, and hopefully by then, we will do.
'I'm philosophical about (bringing new players in), the club has always done business towards the end of the window, all managers and coaches want players in as soon as we can, because you want to be as prepared as you possibly can be.
'What I think has gone unnoticed a little bit is that we have made a really good start, we have two wins from two, played well, and I know we will get better, but I can't knock the performances over the two games to get the results.
'So I am just focusing on the guys that are here while lots of other stuff goes on in the background, and hopefully we can come out of the end of the transfer window in a good place.'

Johnston no stranger to 'brutal' away trips

Alistair Johnston has urged his team-mates to "keep pushing" and "not waste a single minute" in the first leg of Celtic's Champions League play-off against Kairat Almaty on right-back outlined the challenges of the travel for the second leg which involves a 7,000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan."It's massive," said Johnston. "I've talked to the guys that played another team from Kazakhstan, Astana, a few years back and had a pretty comfortable lead going into that second leg, and before you know it, it can get really difficult out there."The travel, the time change, it's not an easy away day at all."You need to make sure you're taking full advantage at home when you have the conditions in your favour and have the crowd on our side."That's something that I don't think is lost on us, being at home first. That's going to be something in the mentality where, if you get one, you've got to keep pushing and keep pushing. It's going to have to be the full 90 minutes and don't waste a single minute of it."Johnston drew on his experience for travelling on international duty and said: "It's not fun, I'll tell you that much, it's pretty brutal."It will be a bit of an eye-opener, I guess, for some of the European boys who are used to their camps being a little hour, two-hour flight away."When you're crossing an ocean or five to eight hours of time zones, it really adds up and makes it difficult. We've had some travel days that have probably added up to about 24 hours."The 26-year-old scored in Celtic's 4-1 win against Falkirk in the Scottish League Cup with a left-footed finish past former team-mate Scott added: "It was kind of just a left-foot swing of the pendulum, I think I caught Bainy by surprise because I don't think I've ever actually taken a shot with my left foot before."I'll definitely be giving him a little bit because he deserves it. He was having a go at my garden, saying that my grass was all patchy, and he's right. I know he's got a great garden, so we have a little bit of a thing going on there, me and him."

Rangers confirm Jayden Meghoma as Jefte replacement signed

Brazilian left-back Jefte will complete a £6 million move to Palmeiras back in his homeland and Russell Martin confirmed he was ready to move quickly with an interest in Meghoma. The 19-year-old has now checked in at Ibrox for the season after 12 appearances on loan at Preston North End last season. Meghoma told the club's website: 'I am very excited to be here, it is a fantastic club, and I know a lot about the rich history of Rangers. When the deal was presented to me, I thought straight away that it would be a fantastic opportunity for myself and my family. 'The main thing for me is getting results. Rangers could, in theory, register the new arrival to play in Tuesday's Champions League qualifier with Club Brugge as they can make up to two changes to the already registered squad. However, they are still awaiting international clearance for Meghoma so that could potentially hamper that.
