Experts begin putting metal structure on Sweden's Vasa warship

A Swedish museum has launched a massive four-year project to preserve the sagging hull of the Vasa, a majestic warship that sank nearly 400 years ago and is now one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions.

Experts have begun putting in place a complex metal structure to support the hull, which more than 60 years after its salvage has begun to sag in the Stockholm museum custom-built for it.
"Today we put in a part of the new support structure, one cradle, and it's needed because the ship needs better support, because the old one from 1961 doesn't cut it anymore," said project leader Peter Rydebjork, showing off the new structure around the 17th century warship.
Due for completion in 2028, in time to mark the 400th anniversary of the shipwreck, the cost of the project is estimated at up to 17.7 million euros ($19.5 million).
Originally intended to sail to the southern Baltic, the three-masted Vasa -- a symbol of a rising Swedish kingdom -- sank only a few hundred metres into its maiden voyage in 1628.
After just fifteen minutes at sea, it capsized and sank in Stockholm's harbour due to a design flaw. The incident claimed the lives of several dozen crewmembers.
Well-preserved in the cold mud and low-salinity waters of the Baltic for more than three centuries, the Vasa was brought to the surface in 1961 after a delicate salvage operation.
Since then, the ship, which is largely intact, has been exhibited at the popular Vasa Museum.
But preserving the wreck is complex: the wood has shrunk over the years and the hull is sagging due to gravity.
It is also listing to one side.

Rydebjork said the old support structure "doesn't really do the work that it should be doing, because the Vasa needs to be supported in the right places."
"The new support structure will actually support the ship where it's strongest on the inside," he added.
The first phase of the project involves stabilising the exterior of the wreck, while a second phase will stabilise the interior.
A third and final phase will right the ship so it no longer lists.

Textiles are then sorted to either be reused or recycled as padding, isolation or composite materials. But recycling centres in Sweden and other EU countries have struggled to keep up with the influx that ensued. "Since the start of the year, the amount of textile waste collected has increased significantly, and with it the costs of sorting," the Swedish government said in a statement. The new regulation defines which textiles are to be sorted and which can be directly thrown in the trash, such as torn socks, stained textiles and overly worn clothes, environment minister Romina Pourmokhtari told reporters. Advertisement Humana Sverige, which collects and sells used clothing, told AFP Thursday that "the influx of textiles we receive has dramatically increased". Humana told AFP that it was closing 600 of its 1,300 collection points in order to limit the flow. "It's impossible for us to handle everything," the organisation explained. The issue is not limited to Sweden, Humana said: "Damaged clothes are sent to sorting centres in Europe, but the entire sector is overwhelmed due to this regulation."

A prenuptial agreement ‒ in Swedish, an äktenskapsförord ‒ may not be the most romantic subject to broach with your future spouse. But for many Swedes it's a dealbreaker for a relationship. Advertisement A new survey by Verian on behalf of Familjens Jurist has revealed that almost one fifth of Swedes (17 percent) would end a relationship if their partner did not agree to sign an äktenskapsförord, a document similar to a prenuptial agreement. Among Swedes who had previously divorced or separated, that number was even higher at 28 percent. In March this year, more than 6,000 Swedes applied for a hindersprövning, a document necessary in order for a wedding to take place, according to figures from the Tax Agency. However, the number of couples who filed a prenuptial agreement with the agency is much lower, at just over 1,000 in January and over 1,300 in June. When two people marry in Sweden, the default is that everything is shared fifty-fifty if they eventually split. "A prenuptial agreement is a way to turn that off ‒ either with regard to everything or certain specific property," lawyer Pierre Kryhl from Familjens Jurist told the TT newswire. A prenuptial agreement can regulate what is considered personal property, or enskild egendom. For it to be valid, it must be written, dated and signed by both parties. It can be altered at a later date if both parties agree, and it can also be signed once the couple are already married. Kryhl added that they can be especially important in situations where one or both of the partners already have children with a former partner. "If one of you has a child from a previous relationship then I think it's smart to think about [a prenup], because it affects what the child inherits and how it should be split up," he said. "You can tell that it becomes very emotional and difficult for them, and understand that they have to go home and discuss it among themselves," he said.
