In a separate incident earlier in the day, a government building was hit by a drone without causing injuries.
Russia's Defence Ministry reported shooting down 44 Ukrainian drones overnight across its territory and the annexed Crimea.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is "extremely saddened by the situation of the children in Gaza", Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta told reporters on Thursday. "She is extremely saddened by the situation children are facing in Gaza. The president has said that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is appalling," the spokesperson said in response to a question on the situation in Gaza. The European Commission also commented on the start of the operation of the Israeli Defence Forces to gain control over Gaza City and to expel its population in order to fight the remaining strongholds of Hamas, which has prompted international criticism. The spokesperson said that von der Leyen denounced the operation at the beginning of August, calling on the Israeli government to reconsider its decision to occupy Gaza, whilst at the same time calling for all hostages to be released by Hamas. The United Nations' UNICEF agency has said more than 50,000 children in Gaza have reportedly been killed or injured, and many of these through malnutrition. Another UN agency, UNRWA, has claimed that 20% of children in Gaza City were malnourished ahead of the military operation.

European leaders back Putin-Trump-Zelensky meeting
A statement, signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, insisted on maintaining pressure on Russia until peace was achieved, including through sanctions. The European leaders also insisted Moscow "cannot have a veto" on Ukraine joining the European Union or NATO. Russia has made clear it will not tolerate Kyiv's membership of the defence alliance. But the leaders said they were "ready to work ... towards a trilateral summit with European support". Friday's Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska ended without the US president extracting concrete commitments from Putin to halt Russia's invasion of Ukraine launched in February 2022. "We will continue to strengthen sanctions and wider economic measures to put pressure on Russia's war economy until there is a just and lasting peace," said the European joint statement. European leaders had been uneasy over Trump's diplomatic outreach to Putin, arguing that Zelensky should have been involved in the Alaska summit. In a separate statement, Starmer praised Trump's efforts as bringing "us closer than ever before to ending Russia's illegal war in Ukraine". Macron, writing on X, cautioned against what he said was Russia's "well-documented tendency to not keep its own commitments". He called for any future peace deal to have "unbreakable" security guarantees. He also argued for increased pressure on Russia until "a solid and durable peace" had been achieved. Ukrainian suspected of links to Nord Stream pipeline blasts arrested
A Ukrainian citizen suspected of participating in the undersea explosions in 2022 that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany has been arrested, German prosecutors said on Thursday. The suspect, identified only as Serhii K. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested overnight in Italy's Rimini province, federal prosecutors said. They added that he is believed to be one of the coordinators of the operation. Explosions on 26 September 2022 damaged the pipelines, which were built to carry Russian natural gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea. The damage added to tensions over the war in Ukraine as European countries moved to wean themselves off Russian energy sources following the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of its neighbour. The explosions ruptured the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which was Russia's main natural gas supply route to Germany until Moscow cut off supplies at the end of August 2022. They also damaged the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which never entered service because Germany suspended its certification process shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine in February of that year. Russia accused the US of staging the explosions, a charge Washington denies. The pipelines were long a target of criticism by the US and some of its allies, who warned that they posed a risk to Europe's energy security by increasing dependence on Russian gas. In 2023, German media reported that a pro-Ukraine group was involved in the sabotage. Ukraine rejected suggestions it might have ordered the attack and German officials voiced caution over the accusation.
