8.8 Magnitude Earthquake off Russia Triggers Tsunami Waves up to 6ft; Hawaii, Japan, and Pacific Coastlines Evacuated
A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula has triggered tsunami waves across the Pacific, prompting emergency evacuations in Hawaii, Japan, and several other regions. Waves as high as 6 feet (1.8 meters) have been recorded moving through Midway Atoll, while Hawaii has already experienced waves of 4 feet (1.2 meters). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that tsunami waves have reached Hawaiian shores, with the highest recorded at Haleiwa, Oahu. Authorities have warned that the threat could continue for hours, urging residents in coastal and low-lying areas to move to higher ground. In Japan, nearly 1.9 million people have been ordered to evacuate. A tsunami measuring 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) struck Iwate Prefecture in the country's north. Officials remain on high alert as further wave activity is expected. In Russia, the Kuril Islands and parts of the Sakhalin region were placed under a state of emergency. Video footage showed waves flooding the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, with reports of significant infrastructure damage. Power outages were reported in Sakhalin following damage to the local grid. Tsunami alerts have also been issued in China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, Peru, and the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador. Authorities across the Pacific continue to monitor the situation, and no all-clear has been issued. Residents in all affected areas are advised to stay informed and comply with emergency instructions.
