Key Phillies Pitcher Faces Pay Raise, Contract Guarantee With Strong Finish

The Philadelphia Phillies are suddenly facing existential questions about their pitching staff.
After opening the season with the deepest and most effective starting rotation in the sport, the Phillies lost veteran starter Aaron Nola to a rare stint on the injured list. And just as Nola prepared to return to the team, franchise ace Zack Wheeler was placed on the injured list with a blood clot near his shoulder.
The team could now find itself without Wheeler for the rest of the season and it's far from certain that Nola can reestablish himself as a capable playoff starter. As the team faces those obstacles in the rotation, though, dependable reliever Matt Strahm is surging toward some pleasant contract upgrades following an extension he signed last year.
"Strahm's extension with the Phillies contained a $4.5MM club option for the 2026 season," Anthony Franco wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. "The southpaw has already pushed that to $5.5MM and will escalate it to $6.5MM when he records two more outs. He's also 10 2/3 innings away from hitting the 60-inning threshold, at which point the price jumps to $7.5MM and becomes guaranteed."

The Phillies chose to extend Strahm even though the team let two high-leverage relievers walk in free agency, with Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez joining new teams after a disappointing playoff run last year. Though he hasn't been as sharp this year as he was in an All-Star season last year, Strahm has been a dependable setup option with a 3.10 ERA in 52 games so far.
His performance has made that extension seem like a relative bargain for the Phillies and even if he somehow does not reach his 60-inning guarantee threshold, the team is likely to keep him.
"Even if Strahm suffers a minor injury that keeps him from getting to 60 frames, the Phillies would probably exercise the option," Franco added. "Strahm is one of (manager) Rob Thomson's more trusted setup arms."
Among a pitching staff that suddenly faces some big questions, that dependability has been key.

HoopsHype ranks Houston's Kevin Durant at No. 2 among NBA small forwards
The Christmas Day showdown between the Rockets and Lakers will feature the NBA's top-two small forwards of the 2025-26 season, according to HoopsHype's latest rankings. In HoopsHype's rankings of expected production for the 2025-26 NBA season, the Houston Rockets have Fred VanVleet at No. 17 among point guards and Amen Thompson at No. 7 among shooting guards. They're even higher than that at small forward, and it's largely why the Rockets have emerged as a championship contender. Kevin Durant, who earned his 15th career All-Star honor last season, checks in at No. 2 on the small-forward rankings. HoopsHype's explanation: For how much things change in the NBA, sometimes, they also stay the same, and these next two players are a great example of that. Even with the NBA's always-shifting strategies based on analytics, somehow, someway, Kevin Durant and LeBron James remain the best small forwards in basketball, in our estimation. Last season, Durant was one of just six players to put up a 26/6/4 stat line, and did so while shooting an astronomical 43 percent from three. According to VORP and BPM, Durant was roughly a Top 30 player in the league. Can he still be the best player on a championship team? We're about to find out, as Durant joins a strong Houston team replete with players that have either championship experience like Fred VanVleet, or have loads of promise like Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. Joining a well-rounded team with toughness and skill on both ends of the floor, if Durant is still an All-NBA-level player and a ceiling raiser for a team, he should be able to prove it in 2025-26... as he won't be forced to endure as much of the two-way load as he did with the Phoenix Suns. The only small forward ranked ahead of Durant is James, and the two future Hall of Famers will face off on Christmas Day in a primetime showdown between the Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers. Houston (52-30) and Los Angeles (50-32) finished as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in last season's Western Conference standings, and both teams are hopeful of more growth in 2025-26 amid the first full season of Luka Doncic with the Lakers and Durant's recent arrival in Houston. Did NASCAR's 2026 Schedule Just Leak? New Year Features Surprising Twists
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The NASCAR 2026 schedule, featuring 38 races, has reportedly been shared by The Athletic and includes several major changes. The new year is set for more circuit replacements, while two venues that featured this year won't be returning in 2026. The new season begins on February 1st at the Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and ends on November 8th at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida. Speaking of the circuits that have been excluded from the 2026 schedule, Mexico City's Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has been removed, along with the Chicago street race, which has been paused for a year. The return of Chicagoland Speedway next year replaces the street race. The most prominent track addition to NASCAR's 2026 schedule is the new race at San Diego's Coronado Naval Base. Another change includes the return of North Wilkesboro Speedway's short track to the regular season, as Dover's one-mile concrete oval is set to take over as the host of the non-championship All-Star Race. Homestead-Miami replaces the playoff finale race at Phoenix. Notably, the short-track showcase inside the Los Angeles Coliseum, which was added a few years ago, won't be returning in 2026. Ketel Marte apologizes while Arizona Diamondbacks go into full-scale damage control
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks went into full-blown damage control on Monday, Aug. 18 trying to defuse the escalating criticism of All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte. The Diamondbacks had several meetings throughout the day, including GM Mike Hazen huddling with manager Torey Lovullo, before Marte publicly apologized for leaving the team after the All-Star break on a mini-vacation. Lovullo also defended Marte and praised him for addressing his detractors in a separate interview. 'I'm proud of him for doing that,'' Lovullo said. 'That's not easy for him to do, and I know he showed some vulnerability. I'm really, really proud of him for digging in the way he did.'' There has been private criticism of Marte asking for days off when not injured since at least last season, but it intensified inside the organization when Marte took a day off before the All-Star break. He played in the All-Star Game, and without telling D-backs officials, did not fly back with his fellow All-Star teammates back to Phoenix. He instead went home to the Dominican Republic and vacationed with his family. He told D-backs officials that he would return to Phoenix for their first game after the All-Star break, but didn't show up at Chase Field until the following Saturday afternoon, missing both games — including his own bobblehead promotion — against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Diamondbacks put him on the restricted list without pay for the two games he missed, but was not disciplined. While several teammates and staff members were privately infuriated with Marte's actions, he insisted Monday that he still has everyone's support while apologizing for his unexcused absence. 'Initially the intent was to come back on Thursday and be with his team and practice,'' Marte said through interpreter Rolando Valles. 'He wants to publicly apologize for not backing that up. I mean, he obviously knew the circumstance of his situation. He got frustrated and was in a bad spot. He truly wants to apologize for his teammates and everybody else.'' Marte insists he still has the backing of all of his teammates despite several privately airing their criticism last week to the Arizona Republic, which is part of the USA TODAY Network. Marte has missed 168 games since 2021, including 33 games this season. 'He's had injuries in the past and that is a plan that is being integrated within the coaching staff and himself in order to keep him on the field ..." Valles said. 'It's intended to be for recovery. In those days [off], he does everything that he needs to do in order to get himself back on the field and help the team win.'' And for the criticism that he takes off days when he's not hurt, including in the final week of last season when the D-backs missed the playoffs by a game, he insists it will serve as motivation. 'He can't control the outsiders and he feels fine about the fact that his intent is always to help the team win, and support his teammates, and everyone around the team," Valles said. 'So actually sometimes that criticism helps him be more motivated to do his job, which is helping the team succeed." Marte, who signed a contract extension this spring through 2031 with the Diamondbacks, also reiterated that he wants to stay with the organization. He will have full control of his fate next season when he becomes a 10-and-5 player, giving him the right to veto all trades. 'In the nine years that he's been here," Valles said, 'he's always tried to play hard and support the team, teammates in the organization. ... He knows the quality of people here and his goal is always to be a D-back and support the organization for as long as he stays here." While the Diamondbacks plan to listen to trade offers for Marte this winter, they privately believe it's unlikely any team would offer a fair package in return for a three-time All-Star who's under contract for six more years for $92.5 million after this season. Besides, Marte said, no one on the Diamondbacks has conveyed to him that his behavior is unacceptable. 'He feels like it's still in good condition,'' Valles said, about Marte's relationship with Lovullo and the front office. 'They have actually been very supportive of the time he's been here. He's never had an issue with a player, coach or the front office in general.'' The Diamondbacks, 60-65 entering Monday night's game, who traded four of their players at the deadline, including All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez, are hoping that any unrest over Marte quickly fades away and is no longer a subject for the rest of the season. Besides, for the Diamondbacks to get any serious offers about a potential Marte trade this winter, they need the criticism to halt. 'I know he's a great teammate," Lovullo said. 'He goes out there and plays hard every single day for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He just wants to win baseball games. That's it. I really don't want to say much more than that. ... So I want to put it behind us because we got baseball games we got to go out there and win." And, yes, perhaps a trade market to build for a certain second baseman, too.
