The unlikely radio station that becomes shared morning habit for lakhs in Kerala

News18a day ago
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 (PTI) Every morning, Naveen, 25, woke up to his mother's routine — the soft clatter of pots, the sizzle of breakfast, and 'Radio Shree" playing from her phone.
The cheerful jingles, local folk songs, and talk shows about Kerala's Kudumbashree movement filled their kitchen like a second voice in the house. Without realising it, he started listening too.
A freelance video editor, Naveen is probably one of the few youngsters who listens to the mobile app-based radio channel which was started two years ago on the 25th anniversary of the Kudumbashree, a women empowerment initiative.
Radio Shree's listener base, which is more than 5 lakh, primarily comprises middle-aged women, according to Gayatri who is a radio jockey (RJ) at Radio Shree.
It is now planning to expand its listener base further and has already taken steps in that direction by handing over its operations to the state-run Malayalam Mission from a private agency and introducing a variety of new programmes, Kudumbashree PRO Anchal Krishnakumar said.
Besides running various campaigns to increase its listeners, the radio channel also plans to put in place an editorial body soon to provide more curated content to its audience, he said while speaking to PTI.
The initial aim of the radio channel, based in the state capital, was to provide information about the activities of the state government and the Kudumbashree to the around 48 lakh members of the organisation, he said.
Now, the channel runs a variety of programmes about Kudumbashree and its members. The programmes include news, music, plays, stories, poems, lectures, interviews, audio versions of well-known literary works, and especially the women's empowerment organisation's activities. These programmes are aired on different days of the week.
Gayatri, who hosts some of these programmes, said that the variety in the shows has pulled in more listeners. It also helped her understand more about Kudumbashree and its activities.
'I came to realise, while doing these shows, that it was not just a mere women's organisation where they just sit and talk about things. It is much more than that. It has helped a lot of women to run their families and stand tall in front of society," she told PTI.
Gayatri hosts several shows, spanning 3-4 hours each day, for the radio and it includes speaking to Kudumbashree members about their experiences since joining the organisation and the changes it has brought about in their lives.
Besides that, she does a show about the various art forms exclusive to Kerala, like 'Kathakali', and gives detailed information about the same. Additionally, she also does a show highlighting the achievements of various Kudumbashree entrepreneurs and the products successfully launched by them.
'Most of the women I have spoken to are those who have succeeded in standing on their own feet after joining Kudumbashree. No one has said that they have had a negative experience. As a result, I feel very happy speaking to them as I have only heard positive experiences," she said.
With over 20 years of experience in the field, Gayatri said that working at Radio Shree has been professionally and emotionally satisfying for her.
'The people I interact with on my shows and hearing their experiences have touched my soul. It gives me a very good feeling doing these shows and sharing the experiences of the women who are part of Kudumbashree," she said.
Naveen's mother, Sheeba, a Kudumbashree member, began listening to the radio after a colleague from their village here featured in one of the radio's shows.
'Subsequently, she became a regular listener. She would play the radio on her phone every day from the morning. I began waking up hearing it. Mom bought Bluetooth speakers and connected them to her phone so that everyone at home can hear the shows.
'Everyone at home likes it. I too have now become a regular listener," Naveen told PTI. His favourite programme is the one about the successful products launched by Kudumbashree members.
'That is the one I like," he said.
He said that he has even encouraged his friends to listen to it.
'I have downloaded the Radio Shree app on my mobile phone and listen to it regularly. I also listen to it while driving the car," he added.

The radio, which underwent a revamp and was launched in July this year with new programmes and under a new operations team — the Malayalam Mission — is working to increase its listener base, Krishnakumar said.
'The app has been downloaded more than 5 lakh times. We have 48 lakh Kudumbashree members, which we are trying to increase to 50 lakh. We are hoping that there will be a commensurate increase in the listeners of the radio as well," he said. PTI HMP HMP ADB

Colin Farrell to be honoured with Golden Icon award at 2025 Zurich Film Festival

London, Aug 11 (PTI) Oscar-nominated actor Colin Farrell is set to be felicitated with the Golden Icon Award at the 20th edition of the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF), to be held from September 25 to October 5, the organisers announced on Monday. The Irish actor, best known for films such as 'Miami Vice", 'Minority Report", 'In Bruges", 'The Batman", 'The Lobster", 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer" and 'The Banshees of Inisherin", will receive the award at a gala event on September 27, where he will present his latest film 'Ballad of a Small Player". Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Edward Berger, the film is based on author Lawrence Osborne's 2014 novel and follows the story of a high-stakes gambler in Macau whose past and debts start to catch up with him. Whilst laying low, he encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation. Farrell will also participate in a ZFF Masters session on September 28, a press release stated. Festival director Christian Jungen described Farrell as 'one of the most passionate and charismatic character actors in auteur cinema". 'He's just as convincing as a villain as he is a romantic lead, or in complex roles that fall somewhere in between—like in Edward Berger's irresistible tragicomedy 'Ballad of a Small Player', where Colin captivates us as a roguish gambler and makes us root for his character. 'Colin Farrell has already worked with many great filmmakers, but under Edward Berger's direction, he truly reaches new heights. He carries the film from beginning to end and takes us on an emotional roller coaster that makes us laugh, cry, and marvel," he added. 'I'm beyond excited to walk its streets, drink its coffee and move amongst its people. It's both generous and humbling to have my years of making film recognised by such a storied festival, one that champions film from all corners of the globe. 'It will be an absolute pleasure to visit later this year and we are thrilled to be bringing 'Ballad of a Small Player' to audiences there," he added. Previous recipients of the Golden Icon Award include Kate Winslet, Jessica Chastain, Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant. 'Ballad of a Small Player" marks Berger's third consecutive film to be screened at ZFF, following 'All Quiet on the Western Front" and 'Conclave". Never imagined would speak to Virat Kohli: Fans recall Patidar sim mix-up experience

Manish Bisi and his friend Khemraj recalled the experience of talking to Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers of being 'something out of a movie' after they were given the number of Rajat Patidar in a SIM card mix-up. Manish got the SIM card from a local mobile shop near his Madagaon village in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district and was in for a shock of a lifetime as the number previously belonged to Patidar. advertisementSoon, Manish and his friend Khemraj were fielding calls from renowned cricketers, including Kohli and De Villiers. At first, the duo saw that Patidar's picture came up when they installed WhatsApp and thought it was a system glitch. However, soon they started to get calls, which they thought were part of a prank from their friends. Later on, Manish and Khemraj got a call from Patidar on July 15, who asked them to return the number. They understood the seriousness of the matter when police arrived at their doorstep to resolve the matter. However, the duo were thrilled with the whole episode, with Khemraj struggling to hide his excitement after speaking to his idol Kohli. "I never imagined I would speak to Virat Kohli one day, and that too from our village. When AB de Villiers called, he spoke in English. We couldn't understand a word, but we were so thrilled," said Khemraj as quoted by PTI. "When Manish used to get calls, he would hand over the phone to me. The callers who identified themselves as Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal asked us why we were using Patidar's number. We explained to them we had bought a new SIM and this is our number."Manish's brother said that the villagers were also thrilled with the whole mix-up as most of them are RCB fans. The villagers are overjoyed because most people here are RCB fans and talking to legends like Kohli and de Villiers is something that cannot be described and even now seems like a dream, said Manish's brother Deshbandhu Bisi."Even if it was all due to a mix-up, these conversations happened out of sheer luck. People just dream of seeing them, we got to speak to them," Deshbandhu foul Gariaband Deputy Superintendent of Police Neha Sinha said that the Patidar's SIM had been deactivated after 90 days of inactivity as per the telecom policies and was reassigned to a new customer, in this case Manish. Sinha said that there was no legal issue or fault on anyone's part. "Manish was actually getting calls from cricketers who were in contact with Rajat Patidar. Patidar informed the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell that his number had been allotted to someone else and requested to have it back.""There was no legal issue or fault on anyone's part. This was simply a result of standard telecom procedures," Sinha the consent of Manish and his family, the SIM card was returned back to Patidar recently. - EndsMust Watch

Bengali film How Are You Feroz explores declining Parsi community

Kolkata, Aug 11 (PTI) Bengali film 'How Are You Feroz', featuring renowned filmmaker Ashoke Viswanathan in a pivotal role as a fictional director, is centred on a Parsi antique dealer and highlights the dwindling numbers of the community, its maker Rupsha Guha said on Monday. After screenings and accolades at several international film festivals, the award-winning film is set to be released in cinema halls and multiplexes later this month. The lead character, Feroz, is an antique art dealer deeply attached to his artefacts, each carrying a personal story. 'As a young man, he loved his parents and a girl he grew up with, along with the artefacts surrounding him. Over time, he had to part with them one by one," Guha told PTI. 'The film explores themes of identity, longing, and resilience through the story of an antique dealer whose possessions mirror his situation," she said. 'It's an emotional story showing how feelings transcend language and race. He has to sell some of his prized artefacts for money, but being emotionally tied to them—like the letters from his loved one—he faces a painful dilemma," she said. Guha, whose cast includes Aryann Bhowmik, Ashoke Viswanathan, and Anusha Viswanathan, said the story underlines that 'emotion reigns over religious and linguistic identity." She added, 'Feroz wanted love and reciprocity and perhaps finds it. In the end, the world of art liberates him. This is my story, your story, our story… a story of an art lover." Stressing that the film deals with the identity crisis of a community member, whose numbers are on the decline, and his antique trade is on a downward journey," Viswanathan told PTI. 'The film's title is derived from a cursory greeting like 'how are you'? We just say it without meaning anything," he added. 'Guha has tried to look inside the mind of Feroz. I play a film director who is close to Feroz," Viswanathan said. 'He lives in the world of antics, curios, and heirlooms. The film questions whether Feroz is also becoming an antique," she said. Reflecting on the Parsi community's situation, Viswanathan said, 'They may not be subalterns in terms of wealth, but their numbers are shrinking. The film focuses on this decline. Viewed through the prism of sentiment, that is its strongest point." 'How Are You Feroz' has been the official selection at the Asian Independent Film Festival 2025 and the Toronto International Women Film Festival 2023. It won Best Feature Film at the Berlin Indie Film Festival 2024, Best Screenplay at Kodaikanal International Film Festival, and Best Film at the Indian Panorama International Film Festival 2025. 'It went to eight festivals and won awards at four of them in recent times," Guha added.
