Nagaland Chief Minister inspects JSW community development initiatives in Ballari
During his visit to the OPJ Centre on Saturday, Mr. Rio toured several flagship programmes, including JSW Shakti and Sakhi - North Karnataka's largest women-led BPO initiative - as well as development activities at the Bunkai and Safety Centre. Impressed by the scale and scope of the initiatives, the Chief Minister lauded JSW's commitment to inclusive growth.
'It is commendable that JSW is working tirelessly not just in production and trade, but also for the holistic development of the surrounding communities,' he said.
Highlighting the purpose of his visit, Mr. Rio stated that Nagaland, a state rich in culture, art, and heritage, was looking to replicate similar models to accelerate its own development journey.
'Nagaland has made notable progress in literacy, gender equality, and human development. Despite challenges, we are committed to building a prosperous State, and see JSW as a potential partner in achieving this vision,' he added.
Peddanna Beedala, zonal head (South India) of JSW Foundation, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the foundation's rural development and social impact programmes. Rahul, chief operating officer of JSW Shakti, also revealed plans to expand the BPO model to Nagaland, sharing details of a strategic blueprint already underway.
The delegation included Sunil Ralph, senior vice-president of JSW Steel, senior officials from the JSW CSR team, and representatives from the Ballari District Administration, Police, and Health Department.
Mr. Rio's visit is expected to pave the way for collaborative development projects between JSW and the Nagaland government, particularly in areas of skill development, women's empowerment, and rural enterprise.

Nagaland CM, ministers leave for Delhi to meet Shah
Agency: Kohima, Aug 19 (PTI) Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and several ministers left for New Delhi on Tuesday to hold meetings with the Home Ministry on several key issues of the state. State government spokesperson and Minister C L John, who is already in Delhi, said that the delegation is scheduled to meet Shah after August 20. The Cabinet has already submitted a document to the ministry with several major issues concerning the welfare of the state including the ongoing Naga political issue and demand for Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA). In the proposed mechanism, six eastern districts of the state will be granted a certain level of autonomy. Government spokesperson and minister Kenye, at a press conference on August 6, said the Cabinet would leave for Delhi regarding the progress on the FNTA, which has been a core demand in the ongoing tripartite talks with the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation. Issues such as Free Movement Regime (FMR) along Indo-Myanmar border and re-imposition of Protected Area Permit in the state could also be discussed at the meeting. The Centre in December scaled back the FMR from 16 km to 10 km, and restricted entry-exit to nine designated points while also re-imposing PAP, which regulated the entry of foreigners into the state. The Nagaland government has expressed concern that the revised rules will impose hardships on border villagers who traditionally rely on free cross-border movement for their socio-economic needs. Matters pertaining to the construction of Foothill Road, also known as Trans-national highway, from Tizit in Mon to Khelma in Peren district, an airport in the state capital and also smaller airports in Mon, Tuensang and Mokokchung districts have also been put up to the Union Home Minister for discussion, John told PTI. Upon return of the chief minister, the Cabinet would hold the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting to brief legislators about the meeting, Kenye told reporters here. JSW Steel, South Korea's Posco sign pact for steel plant in India
JSW Steel and South Korea's Posco have signed a pact to explore setting up a 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant in India, with Odisha among the top locations being considered for the project. Both the steel makers signed non-binding heads of agreement (HoA) in Mumbai, according to a joint statement issued by the companies on Monday. Lee Ju-tae, representative director and president, Posco Holdings, and Jayant Acharya, joint managing director and chief executive officer, JSW Steel were present during the signing of the agreement. The HoA outlines the broad framework for the proposed 50:50 joint venture — which was announced in October 2024. As the next step in the proposed venture, JSW and Posco will carry out a detailed feasibility study to determine the plant's location, investment structure, resource requirements and other critical factors. Odisha is among the key locations being considered for the project given its natural resource base and logistical advantages. 'JSW and Posco are looking at various sites which will make sense in terms of proximity to mines, logistics, port etc. Odisha remains one of our potential sites,' Acharya said. This partnership brings together JSW's proven execution capabilities and strong domestic footprint with Posco's technological leadership in steelmaking, he said. 'The proposed venture aligns with India's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and will help create a globally competitive manufacturing hub to serve both domestic and export markets,' Acharya added. Lee Ju-tae said in a statement that India was central to the future of global steel demand. 'Our collaboration with JSW is based on mutual trust and a shared long-term vision. This initiative represents our commitment to supporting India's industrial growth while creating long-term value for both organisations.' For Posco, setting up upstream capacity in India has been a journey riddled with challenges. Its last attempt to establish a steel plant in India was with the Adani Group in 2022. Previous efforts included plans for a $12 billion greenfield facility in Odisha, MoUs with the Miglani family-controlled Shree Uttam Steel and Power, state-run Steel Authority of India and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam. Currently, the global steel major operates a downstream unit in Maharashtra. On investment in greenfield, the thumb rule is in the range of $1 billion for a million tonne capacity, Acharya told Business Standard. 'Once the technology gets decided and the contours of the project are defined, the cost of the project will be firmed up,' he added. For Sajjan Jindal-promoted JSW Steel, the venture adds to a long line of capacity expansion projects. India's largest steel producer, with 34.2 MTPA of domestic capacity, is targeting 41.9 MTPA in India by September 2027, driven by rising demand from infrastructure spending. By financial year 2031 (FY31), the target is to take capacity to 50 MTPA in India and including the US, 51.5 MTPA.

As part of the next steps, JSW and POSCO will undertake a detailed feasibility study to finalise the plant's location, investment terms, resource availability, and other critical factors. In a statement on Monday (August 18, 2025), JSW Steel said it has signed a non-binding Heads of Agreement (HoA) to jointly explore setting up a 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant in India. Given its natural resource base and logistical advantages, Odisha is among the key locations being considered. 'This HoA builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties in October 2024 and outlines the broad framework for the proposed 50:50 joint venture,' the steelmaker said. The HoA was signed in Mumbai in the presence of Lee Ju-tae, representative director and president, POSCO Holdings, and Jayant Acharya, joint managing director & CEO, JSW Steel. 'This partnership brings together JSW's proven execution capabilities and strong domestic footprint with POSCO's technological leadership in steelmaking. The proposed venture aligns with India's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and will help create a globally competitive manufacturing hub to serve both domestic and export markets,' JSW Steel's Acharya said. The agreement marks a significant step toward deepening strategic collaboration between JSW Steel and the POSCO Group of South Korea. 'India is central to the future of global steel demand. Our collaboration with JSW is based on mutual trust and a shared long-term vision. This initiative represents his company's commitment to supporting India's industrial growth while creating long-term value for both organisations,' POSCO Holdings' Lee Ju-tae said. JSW Steel is the flagship business of the $23 billion JSW Group and India's leading integrated steel producer with a consolidated capacity of 35.7 MTPA, including 1.5 MTPA in the United States. In 2022, POSCO Group, leading industrial group in South Korea, had signed a pact with Adani Group to explore business opportunities in sectors like steel, renewable energy among others.
