IPOH (Aug 16): The recovery of about RM5 billion in illicit gains from corruption over the past one to two years reflects the efficiency and determination of the Madani Government in combating graft, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said the achievement demonstrates the government's firm commitment to anti-corruption efforts despite scepticism and criticism from certain quarters.
'Some people make cynical remarks about governance and our strong anti-corruption drive. Let me share how much we've managed to recover in just one to two years — across all agencies, from politicians to ministries, immigration to customs.
'How much? We've already seized between RM4 billion and RM5 billion from corrupt activities,' he said when launching the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral development project here today.
Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Transport Minister Anthony Loke and MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini.
Anwar stressed that good governance must remain a core principle in all development projects to ensure efficiency and integrity.
'This includes every aspect – training, sophistication and our capability to master artificial intelligence. I hope the Ipoh Sentral project can serve as a model example,' he said.
He urged all parties, including the Menteri Besar, Ipoh City Council and the relevant ministries, to re-examine the project's governance mechanisms.
'Even if the plans are already in place, see if they can be further improved. If we succeed, Ipoh Sentral could become one of the best holistic development models for the nation,' he said. – Bernama Anwar Ibrahim corruption governance Ipoh Sentral recovery

South Korea and US launch annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military drills

SEOUL: South Korea and the United States commenced their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises on 18 August, incorporating real-world threat scenarios and combat lessons from modern conflicts. The drills will run until 28 August, involving approximately 18,000 South Korean troops and a similar number of US personnel, matching last year's participation levels. While the overall scale remains comparable to 2024, around half of the planned 40 field training exercises have been postponed to September due to weather conditions. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff cited meteorological factors for the adjustments but also considered potential reactions from North Korea, which historically opposes such drills. Both Seoul and Washington reiterated that the exercises primarily focus on refining responses to threats posed by North Korea. North Korean Defence Minister No Kwang Chol previously condemned the drills as 'provocative actions' on 10 August, warning of serious consequences. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises aim to enhance coordination and readiness between the two allies amid ongoing regional tensions. – Bernama-Sputnik

Melaka to shine as global tourism hub with World Tourism Day 2025

MELAKA: The upcoming World Tourism Day (WTD) celebration in Melaka is set to elevate the state's global profile and attract long-term investment opportunities. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh highlighted that the event will bring international exposure, benefiting sectors like health tourism, cruise tourism, and halal tourism. 'Although this event lasts only two days, its impact could last for the next 10 years,' he said during the Melaka Government's Monthly Assembly. He emphasised that Melaka will no longer be seen just as a UNESCO World Heritage city but as a green and smart tourism hub. The event serves as a key milestone ahead of Visit Melaka Year and Visit Malaysia 2026. Ab Rauf noted that hosting WTD is a prestigious recognition from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). 'This is our moment to showcase Melaka to the world,' he added. The celebration is expected to enhance the state's competitiveness and strengthen its tourism appeal globally. Increased tourist arrivals will directly benefit the local economy, creating jobs and boosting small businesses. 'More tourists mean more hotel bookings, more job opportunities,' said Ab Rauf. Local communities will also gain from selling cultural products and authentic experiences. The state government aims to maximise this rare opportunity by ensuring thorough preparations. WTD and the World Tourism Conference (WTC) will run from Sept 27 to 29, with 159 international delegates attending. - Bernama

PLUS and LPT2 highways now feature 112 EV charging points

KUALA LUMPUR: PLUS Malaysia Berhad has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging network with 112 operational points along PLUS and Lebuhraya Pantai Timur 2 (LPT2) highways. The company surpassed its initial target of 100 charging points by year-end, contributing to Malaysia's goal of 1,000 fast-charging stations by 2025. PLUS managing director Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said the charging points are strategically placed at rest areas, lay-bys, and petrol stations for user convenience. She noted a growing utilisation rate of EV chargers on PLUS highways, reflecting increased adoption of electric vehicles nationwide. PLUS plans to launch Malaysia's first Highway EV Hub at Seremban R&R (Southbound) by early 2027. The company aims to energise 350 EV charging points by 2028 to further support sustainable travel. PLUS chief commercial officer Mohd Fauzi Puniran said the installed chargers are Direct Current Fast Chargers (DCFCs) for efficient long-distance travel. These chargers provide output power from 47 kW to 200 kW, enabling an 80 per cent charge in 15 to 30 minutes. The charging points feature universal CCS2 connectors compatible with most major EV brands in Malaysia. - Bernama
