FMM urges diplomatic push and domestic reforms to counter US tariffs
FMM president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai stressed the need for immediate intervention to delay the tariff implementation and secure long-term exemptions. He warned that the new levy would strain businesses, particularly those with tight margins or fixed supply contracts.
'Malaysia's case must be urgently elevated at the highest levels of US policymaking, supported by strong data and strategic positioning that highlight our value to US supply chains,' Soh said.
Domestically, he proposed financial relief for affected industries, enhanced export promotion, and structural reforms to boost competitiveness. Key recommendations include raising the Market Development Grant ceiling, waiving MATRADE fees for trade missions, and offering incentives for branding and digital market access.
Soh also emphasised the need for productivity-driven growth through Industry 4.0 adoption, supported by tax incentives and digitalisation grants for SMEs. Workforce upskilling and reinvestment of foreign worker levies into apprenticeship schemes were also highlighted as crucial steps.
On a regional level, he suggested leveraging Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship to form a Supply Chain Coordination Council, strengthening intra-ASEAN trade resilience. Additionally, accelerating free trade agreements with the EU and emerging markets was deemed vital to diversify Malaysia's trade base.
The FMM further called for a review of the SST structure, proposing B2B service tax exemptions for licensed manufacturers to ease supply chain costs. - Bernama

Chery becomes first Chinese carmaker to export over 5 million vehicles
KUALA LUMPUR: Chery International Group has become the first Chinese car company to export more than five million vehicles worldwide. It has also maintained the No. 1 position for passenger car exports for 22 consecutive years. In July, Chery International achieved the "Double 500" milestone, emerging as the fastest-rising carmaker on both the Fortune Global 500 and the Fortune China 500 lists. The group is now ranked 233rd globally, up from 385th in 2024. It is ranked 59th in China, up from 100th in 2024. These achievements were driven by the Omoda/Jaecoo brand in 44 markets across Asean, Europe, Australia and South America. In just over two years, Omoda/Jaecoo amassed a 37 per cent share of Chery International's total export volume, with cumulative global sales surpassing 570,000 units. It is the fastest emerging brand globally to exceed the half-million mark in sales. Omoda/Jaecoo models have also made significant strides in the new energy vehicle (NEV) category. In the first quarter of this year, NEV models accounted for 13,023 units, a sharp rise from 2,325 units in the same period in 2024. In the first half of 2025, NEVs accounted for 40 per cent of its total exports. Omoda/Jaecoo's global momentum is equally evident in Europe, where it has become the fastest-growing Chinese automotive brand and the first ever to sell over 10,000 units in Spain within 11 months in the market. In Malaysia, the brand grew quickly after the Jaecoo J7 was launched in July 2024. The company announced that more than 17,000 of its vehicles are now on Malaysian roads. According to the Road Transport Department, Omoda/Jaecoo remained among Malaysia's top five automotive brands in the first half of 2025. Moving forward, Omoda/Jaecoo's global export strategy will focus on deeper investments in key markets in Europe, South America and Asean. Malaysia will serve as the centralised right-hand drive hub to support the brand's global ambitions.

Lee Chong Wei joins BAM to elevate Malaysian badminton
KUALA LUMPUR: Former national men's doubles player Tan Boon Heong (pic) has expressed support for Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei's appointment as a new Council Member of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). He believes Chong Wei's experience and leadership can significantly contribute to BAM's mission of strengthening Malaysian badminton. Tan emphasised the importance of granting Chong Wei the autonomy to implement necessary changes within the association. 'If Datuk Seri Chong Wei joins BAM, I really feel he can help BAM. But if he is only there just to attend meetings, to me that would be a waste.' He added that Chong Wei's deep understanding of the sport positions him well to identify and address key areas for improvement. BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz recently announced Chong Wei's inclusion in the council as part of efforts to revitalise Malaysian badminton. The association also appointed three corporate leaders to strengthen its governance and strategic direction. Employees Provident Fund (EPF) director Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon will oversee finance, while former NTV7 CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly will handle branding and media strategy. Puad's lesson on PAS peppered with false claim DAP, MCA silent on Zara
An Umno supreme council member has falsely accused DAP and MCA of not speaking up on the death of 13-year-old Sabah student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Puad Zarkashi had raised this in criticising MCA former vice-president Ti Lian Ker for claiming that PAS appeared more rational compared to Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh and former law minister Zaid Ibrahim for agreeing with him. 'Don't assume that PAS is somehow more 'dignified' (berhemah) just because Akmal defended the Malaysian flag from being flown upside down. Akmal has never framed the flag issue as a racial matter.
