‘Going out for important work. Will come home & eat': Noida constable's last text to wife
Noida: Saurabh Kumar was always at the forefront of high-stakes action, which is why the 32-year-old constable was assigned to the special operations group (SOG) and was part of the seven-member team that went to Ghaziabad's Nahal village to catch Qadir, one of NCR's most wanted criminals.
"I'm going out for some important work, and will eat after returning," Saurabh told his wife Ayushi, when she messaged him around 9pm to ask about having dinner at home.
Ayushi called him two hours later, but the call went unanswered. Minutes after that, Saurabh was caught in an ambush and shot dead by around 8-10 miscreants during the raid.
The family was informed about his death by 1.30am.
Saurabh, who belonged to Badhaiv Kannukheda village in Shamli, always wanted to join the forces.
In 2016, he joined UP Police and was posted to Noida ever since. In 2020, he married Ayushi, daughter of a Delhi Police cop.
Saurabh's colleagues say he was one to count on.
"He was good at catching criminals. He was always part of the teams that would go to nab notorious criminals inside and outside the state. He played a role in many notable arrests and received honors," a colleague from the Phase 3 police station, where Saurabh was posted, told TOI on Monday.
Another colleague said that Saurabh had recently been talking about going on a vacation.
"He told us that it had been a long time since he went anywhere and would take a ten-day leave to go on a trip with his family," the colleague said.
Younger of the two brothers, Saurabh was the main breadwinner for his family. His father Uttam Kumar and brother Rajat, both farmers, stayed in their Shamli village, while Saurabh and Ayushi lived in a rented accommodation in Sector 122 of the city.
On Monday, villagers from the constable's hometown had travelled to the city to console the family and pay their tributes.
Saurabh's remains were brought to the house and cremated with full state honors. His father Uttam Kumar appealed to UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure justice for the family and award the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrators.
Noida Police, too, rallied around the family.
Commissioner Laxmi Singh announced that every officer and employee of the Gautam Budh Nagar Commissionerate would contribute one day's salary while she would add Rs 1 lakh from her paycheck, totaling Rs 75.1 lakh that would be dedicated to the family.
"On behalf of Commissionerate Gautam Budh Nagar, we express our heartfelt condolences to the family of our martyred brave soldier," Singh said.

In one of the biggest gold heists in the country, gold worth Rs 52 crore stolen from bank in Karnataka's Vijayapura
In one of the major gold heists reported in the country, thieves in Karnataka fled with gold worth Rs 52 crore from a branch of Canara Bank in Karnataka's Vijayapura district over a weekend last month. Though the theft took place in the Managuli branch of Canara Bank in Vijayapura on May 23, the crime was discovered on May 26 when the staff came back to work. The police are yet to make any arrests in the case. While the thieves decamped with 51 kilogram of gold ornaments, the police have yet to find out about the mode of transport of the loot. On Monday, Laxman Nimbargi, Superintendent of Police, Vijayapura, said it is suspected that the gold ornaments were stolen between 6 pm on May 23 and 11.30 am on May 25. 'We have formed eight teams to nab the accused. It is suspected that 6 to 8 people were involved in the theft,' he added. A police officer said it was a pre-planned theft, and the thieves waited for a long weekend, the second Saturday and Sunday, to commit the crime. The officer said the thief used a fake key to enter the bank, and switched off the alarm. They also switched off the CCTV cameras, and took away the Network Video Recorder (NVR). They only opened the bank lockers, and fled with the gold. The Vijayapura police said that after the theft, the accused kept a black colour doll, making it look like they had performed some ritual at the crime scene. This is not the first time that a bank has been the target of a heist in Karnataka. On October 28 last year, a gang stole gold ornaments worth Rs 13 crore from a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in the Nyamathi town in Davanagere district, 325 km away from Bengaluru. The Davanagere police later arrested six people involved in the crime. On January 17 this year, a gang robbed gold worth Rs 12 crore at the Vyavasaya Seva Sahakari Sangha Bank at Kotekar in Mangaluru. The police arrested six people in connection with the heist.

US Man Weighing 151 Kg Sues Disney For Rs 42 Lakh After Waterslide Injury
A US man has sued Walt Disney for Rs 42.7 lakh ($50,000) in damages after he suffered injuries on a waterslide at the entertainment behemoth's amusement park. Eugene Strickland, who weighed 151 kg at the time, 13 kg above the ride's weight limit -- was on the Downhill Double Dipper at Disney's Blizzard Beach Waterpark in July 2021 when the incident took place. As per the lawsuit filed last week, Mr Strickland has blamed the waterslide's design and "exhilarating speeds" for causing the injuries. It allegedly caused his inner tube to dislodge from beneath him and made him "land with force onto the hard plastic surface of the slide". He said he "suffered serious bodily injury" which resulted in pain and suffering, disability, scarring, disfigurement, mental anguish and loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life. The Florida resident argued that Walt Disney World displayed negligence and failed to maintain safe premises. He also claims that the theme park was aware of the "safety hazard" and "concealed trap" that led to his injuries. "Our client was severely injured on a ride at Disney's Blizzard Beach. He has filed a lawsuit alleging that it was the defendant's lax safety measures and oversight that contributed to those injuries. We are pursuing justice for him and working to hold Disney accountable for their alleged negligence," his attorneys told People. It remains unclear in the complaint if Mr Strickland was aware of the weight limit before entering the slide. This is not the first instance when Walt Disney World has been sued. Last year, Jeffrey Piccolo filed a "wrongful death" lawsuit against Disney after his wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, died when she suffered an allergic reaction from her meal at a restaurant at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. However, Disney said Mr Piccolo signed away his right to take action against the company when he agreed to the terms and conditions of Disney+ during a free trial of the streaming service several years ago.

From tech-driven investigation to police training, new Uttar Pradesh DGP lists his priorities
Newly appointed director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna on Monday outlined his priorities, emphasising on police training, technology-driven investigation, a zero-tolerance policy against crime, women's safety and empowerment, besides improving police services as well as giving importance to police welfare. He also said stress will be on providing citizen-centric services. In his first interaction with the media at UP Police headquarters, new DGP Rajeev Krishna said there will be no compromise on law and order. The focus will be on taking strong action against organised crime, including cyber crime, he said. He also said women's safety and empowerment will be prioritised. Resolving public grievances and providing sensitive hearings will also be given importance, he said. 'There will be sensitive hearings of public grievances, and will ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are effective so that citizens' voices are heard,' he said, answering a question about concerns over the alleged insensitivity of some police officers. The new state police chief also spoke about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in crime investigation and public welfare work as well as police training. 'AI will be a game-changer in crime investigation, police training and public welfare as well as optimised use of police infrastructure,' he said. The training of new police recruits and regular skill enhancement of the existing police personnel is also among the priorities, he said. Quality training of police personnel and refresher courses is mandatory, he said. He further said cybercrime is a significant problem. With the increased use of digital technology post-COVID-19, efforts will be made to utilise the latest technology to take action against cybercrime, he added. Police welfare will be a priority, and efforts will be made to identify and utilise the skills of talented police personnel effectively, he said. Krishna had proved his mettle after ensuring the smooth conduct of the mega police recruitment written examination involving 48,17,441 applicants, including 15 lakh women, with the use of AI enhancing security measures in August last year. This success helped the government bounce back from two back-to-back question paper leaks in February 2024. He used AI-enabled strong safeguards against any malpractice during the examination process and dismantled the plans of copying mafias and solver gangs.
