WATCH: Church takes uMfolozi community plight into their own hands
Ivangeli Lokudumisa Church congregants under uMfolozi Municipality in northern KZN took service delivery shortcomings into their own hands recently.
The church members built a temporary pedestrian bridge to help safeguard children and community members ahead of the imminent reopening of schools.
Although a rudimentary, temporary measure, the bridge will put an end to schoolchildren having to remove their shoes and other items of clothing as they do when crossing the submerged Mhlahlaneni bridge on the P152 between KwaMbonambi and Sokhulu.

Municipalities celebrate Mandela Day by carrying out community service initiatives
ERMELO – As the world prepared to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy on his birthday, July 18, Mpumalanga geared up to mark the occasion with a wide range of community service initiatives across all 17 local municipalities. The Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, issued a directive that Mandela Day activities be rolled out in various wards across the province, emphasising the importance of active community involvement. He called on residents to play their part in addressing the challenges faced by underprivileged communities. This year's Mandela Day theme, 'It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality,' encourages renewed efforts to confront persistent social and economic challenges. Premier Ndlovu, together with Msukaligwa executive mayor Mapule Nkosi and local councillors, pledged to spend 67 minutes repairing damaged roads in selected streets. The gesture aligns with the international campaign that encourages people to devote 67 minutes of service – symbolising the 67 years Mandela dedicated to public life – to meaningful acts of community upliftment. Additional activities included painting public buildings, repairing water and sanitation infrastructure, and distributing food to vulnerable residents. Local leaders, councillors and community members were urged to unite in service to demonstrate their commitment to Mandela's values of dignity, justice and compassion. Premier Ndlovu said these collective efforts reflect the Mpumalanga Government's commitment to humanitarian service, and its continued resolve to uphold Mandela's legacy by tackling poverty and inequality in the province. WATCH: Caxton shows its heart on Mandela Day
Staff of Caxton Local Media Joburg East as well as the Benoni City Times slapped on some hairnets and slipped on gloves as we endeavoured to make 1 000 sandwiches in celebration of Mandela Day on July 18. Loaves of bread were stacked high as staff members abandoned their desks to prepare delectable sarmies, which were donated to various charity organisations within each publication's footprint. Moved to tears, Antonette Grobler, of the Salvation Army Benoni Goodwill Centre, received the City Times' contribution. 'I cannot remember when last anyone did anything for our organisation for Mandela Day,' she said. 'Knowing that each individually packed sandwich was not only prepared with us in mind, but that our local community newspaper identified us as worthy beneficiaries, is truly heart-warming.' Casting her eyes on a further donation of packets of soup, which were donated by Caxton staff, Grobler said that the initiative will assist greatly in keeping bellies full and hearts filled with hope. 'I cannot wait to start handing these treats out at our weekly Friday soup kitchen,' continued Grobler. 'We are incredibly grateful to Caxton and the Benoni City Times.
