Hollyoaks boss reveals how Sun's Soaps Editor sparked supervillain Clare Devine's return
HOLLYOAKS boss Hannah Cheers has revealed what sparked off iconic supervillain Clare Devine's return - and it turns out it's me.
The executive producer had just been announced as the Channel 4 soap's new boss and was in full planning mode for the show's changes when I ran into her at an awards show last summer.

And like I do every time I see a soap boss - I used my time wisely by asking/demanding/begging for the return of my favourite characters.
But for the time ever it actually happened.
I sat down with Hannah on set earlier this month for a set visit where she revealed how our conversation in the hotel bar had sparked off the most iconic comeback since Kim Tate popped back to Emmerdale.
She told me: 'It was you! It was the conversation we had in the hotel in Manchester that started it off.
'We were talking and you said, when are you going to bring Clare back? And I was like, oh my god, it's a million dollar question, everyone talks about it.
'And I said to you, because at the time we didn't have any plans, because obviously we were working towards the transition, and I was trying to filter people out, and trying to re-engineer stories, and trying to make sense of all of that, and knew that it wasn't possible right there and then.
'But the interesting thing that I said to you was, tell me what it is about Clare that is so important to you, and so iconic, and you said, because she's the only character who actually doesn't give a hell about what she does. She enjoys being evil and so I took inspiration from that with Grace's story.'
She added: 'In terms of Clare, you know, again, I took on board massively what you said about she enjoys being evil and we're never going to come away from that because she does.
'However, in bringing Clare in 2025, what I spoke to Gemma about right at the beginning was 'I'm not doing this and just bringing in the third iteration of like Clare that is two dimensional and that only has that layer and level to her.
'Not that she didn't in the past, but she, as you said, she rarely had true, true feeling and true kind of like selflessness. She had nothing, nothing selfless about her.
'And she doesn't now, except now she has a reason to have experienced and make herself vulnerable and be susceptible to that.
'So we do see a different layer. She doesn't like showing it.'
Viewers know that Clare's return has seen her arrive with a child - Tori - who she and DI Banks effectively kidnapped from her grandfather Dodger.
'Clare absolutely sees herself as that child's mother,' Hannah added.
'And that's also what's quite enjoyable. And it's so galling to everyone else in the community. So that has given her the chink in the armour.'
And Hannah also revealed that Clare will play a big part in the 30th anniversary in October - and clash with Tori's great-grandfather - serial killer Jez Blake.
'Well, yes, obviously we've got two kind of Hollyoaks titans here,' she teased.
'We've got kind of very iconic Hollyoaks faces. And it's not an accident that they are both in the show in the run up to the 30th anniversary.'
There will also be a classic Hollyoaks stunt for the 30th - which won't be limited to one episode - more a celebration over the entire month of October.
Hannah said: 'You can't do a Hollyoaks commemoration without some kind of spectacle. So there will be a stunt.'
And it's not just the Blakes that Clare has to deal with - her original, tiny nemesis Tom Cunningham is back to take her on.
'How could we possibly bring in Clare Devine and not have her original nemesis in the show?' Hannah laughed.
From Hollyoaks to Hollywood
James Corden played a caretaker in the early days of the soap.
The former American TV host doesn't have much positive to say about his time on the soap, claiming it was "hell on earth."
Since his short-lived time on the show he has gone on to bigger things including smash hit comedy Gavin and Stacey.
Rachel Shenton joined the soap as aspiring glamour model Mitzeee Minniver in 2010.
Over two years her character was sent to prison, got pregnant and had a number of romantic affairs.
Since leaving Hollyoaks she has won an Oscar for best live action short film, The Silent Child.
Rachel has also starred in White Gold and All Creatures Great and Small
Emmett J. Scanlan played gangster turned anti-hero Brendan Brady.
Emmett played the love interest of Steve Hayes, with their romance delighting fans until it turned violent.
Since his departure Emmett has appeared in Peaky Blinders, The Fall, Gangs of London and even appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy
Emma Rigby joined Hollyoaks when she was 15 as Hannah Ahsworth.
Hannah's eating disorder storyline was the first of it's kind on TV while other plots included being caught in a fire, gangland drug dealing and running away.
Since leaving the soap in 2010 Emma has gone on to star in ABCs Once Upon a Time in Wonderland as the Red Queen. Other roles include guest appearances in Death In Paradise, Ripper Street and Fresh Meat
Nico Mirallegro got his big break with Hollyoaks starring as emo Barry 'Newt' Newton.
Nico's main storyline in the soap was developing schizophrenia which culminated in a suicide pact.
He left the soap in 2010 and went on to star in My Mad Fat Diary, Our Girl, Rillington Place, The Ark and Common, Penance, as well as the Mike Leigh movie Peterloo and was nominated for a Bafta for his role in period drama The Village.
Ricky Whittle used Hollyoaks as a stepping stone to break America.
He played one of the soap's resident hunks, Calvin Valentine, from 2006 to 2011 - when he was killed off at his wedding.
After leaving the soap Ricky cracked America starring in teen drama The 100 and America Gods.
He also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing in 2009.
Warren Brown joined Hollyoaks in 2005 for a year as evil Andy Holt.
His stint on the show consisted of date rape storylines and a crime spree, before eventually being killed off.
After leaving Hollyoaks, Warren became a big hitter in TV playing DS Justin Ripley in Luther, as well as major roles in a number of dramas including Liar, The Responder, Homefront and Good Cop.
Wallis Day played Holly Cunningham in the soap for years before leaving.
In 2021 Wallis won the role of Batwoman in DC's series, taking over from Ruby Rose.
'Again, it's a kind of nod to the past and celebration of all things Hollyoaks.
'Tom has the upper hand to start with, which I think is what's so surprising about this story. And there's a surprise reveal of how we first finds Tom.'

How Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer who derailed serial killer investigation 'tried to hide his voice when he was finally snared'
The Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer who derailed the investigation into the serial killer desperately tried to hide his voice when finally arrested, a retired police chief has revealed. Chris Gregg, 68, of West Yorkshire Police, has spoken out about the conman 20 years on from the investigation that unmasked him. The so-called Yorkshire Ripper, a reference to Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper, killed at least 13 women from 1975 to 1980 in a reign of terror across northern England. Peter Sutcliffe was eventually identified as the man behind the killings and jailed for life in 1981. He died in prison in November 2020, aged 74. But it only came after a man named John Humble, dubbed Wearside Jack, had falsely confessed to the killings in 1978 and 1979, in a two-minute voice recording and three letters sent to police and journalists. West Yorkshire Police believed the letters and tape were genuine and diverted resources to Humble's home town of Sunderland. His cruel efforts hobbled police investigations - leaving Sutcliffe at large to kill three more women before his eventual arrest. No one knew it was Humble behind the hoax confessions for a further 24 years after Sutcliffe's conviction in 1981 - until a cold case review by police in 2005. And now investigator Mr Gregg has told The Mirror about finally snaring him - revealing Humble initially just 'kept nodding' in police interviews, knowing his voice would immediately give him away as the man behind the hoax tape. It was only when officers informed Humble a 'one in a billion match' had been made between his DNA and a tiny saliva spot on one of the letters that he eventually confessed - knowing he was caught. With Humble now speaking up in interviews, he then agreed to read aloud a transcript of his original manufactured tape. And only now, a quarter of a century on from that moment, has Mr Gregg re-listened to the recording - describing it as 'chilling' to hear it again. It was advances in forensic science, plus a new police record of Humble - from his arrest for being drunk and disorderly in 2001 - that finally created the breakthrough. With officers finally able to match his DNA to the saliva sample on the hoax letter, they soon found themselves closing in on the culprit. The former security guard was arrested at his home in in the Ford area of Sunderland, where he lived with his brother - just a few miles from the area voice experts had said the hoax taper's accent was from. He was soon brought to Yorkshire for interviewing by Mr Gregg, the new lead of West Yorkshire Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID). And the cop soon knew he had got the right man, when Humble began reading aloud the tape transcript. The former Detective Chief Superintendent said: 'Humble had quite a remarkable memory. 'He took himself back to when he made it. It was an incredible moment to hear him read it out.' He continued: 'Those last three Ripper victims may not have died had it not been for Humble.' Barbara Leach, 20, of Bradford; Marguerite Walls, 47, of Leeds; and Jacqueline Hill, 20, also of Leeds, were all killed by Sutcliffe between September 1979 and November 1980. Sutcliffe was arrested just eight weeks later - but might have been apprehended sooner had Humble not derailed the inquiry. Mr Gregg, who had been at the heart of the £6million hunt for the hoaxer, said: 'It proved to be tragic. He did something that he never needed to do.' The envelope with a seal that bore the key saliva sample to enable the DNA match was only discovered due to Mr Gregg's sheer determination. Having worked on the Yorkshire Ripper inquiry, he knew he had to get to the bottom of it, enlisting the two original detectives for help. He first worked out the three hoax letters had been destroyed in the original forensics process, having been analysed using a chemical with a destructive effect. But he was not going to give up that easily - and remembered scientists often keep small snippets of evidence in high-profile cold cases such as this one. So, Mr Gregg wrote to the head of the forensics lab in the West Yorkshire town of Wetherby, asking if they could search for any remaining samples. And they were in luck. The police chief received a random phone call several months later to say the lab had found a 3cm sample of the final hoax letter. It was in perfect condition, preserved between two glass slides - and gave them the answers they had been looking for. Mr Gregg said it was one of the defining moments of his career in the police: 'If we had not found him, I am convinced that he would have taken that secret to the grave. 'He had not told a living soul what he had done.' Humble, who was sentenced to eight years in in 2006 after admitting perverting the course of justice, died on July 30 2019.

JoJo Siwa addresses her sexuality amid shock new romance with Chris Hughes
JoJo Siwa marked the start of 2025 Pride Month with a poignant message for her social media followers. Taking to Instagram Stories on Sunday, the 22-year-old former child star wrote, 'Happy day 1 of the happiest month. What I have learned over the last 22 years is that pride is all about love, acceptance and celebration.' She added, 'No matter who you are or what you are, you are you, you are beautiful, and you are perfect. Everyone's story is different and everyone's journey is different.' Siwa — who shocked fans when she started dating Celebrity Big Brother UK costar Chris Hughes, 32, in April — declared that the 'most beautiful thing' about love is 'that it's just love.' In conclusion, she wrote, 'Happy pride to the beautiful LGBTQIA+ community, to the allies, and to all that exist:).' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. While starring on season 24 of Celebrity Big Brother UK, JoJo shared, 'I've always told myself I'm a lesbian, but I think being here, I've realized, "Oh no, I'm not a lesbian, I'm queer." I think that's really cool. I'm switching letters.' Later, while speaking to Us Weekly, the former Dance Moms personality said she thought the statement wouldn't make it to television. 'That was one of those conversations actually that I was having that I was like, "This will never see the light of day." I don't mind that it did, because I actually think it starts a very beautiful conversation of queer. I think queer joy is so special and so magical,' she told the outlet. She went on to reject putting her sexuality 'in a box.' 'Queer is a beautiful umbrella term for the LGBTQIA community,' Siwa emphasized. 'I think that for me to be a woman and say I have a non-binary partner, but then also say I'm a lesbian is crazy. 'I just realized within myself that the way my eyes are to the world, I think I'm just queer. It has nothing to do with anything besides that. It's nothing to be ashamed of. The world is going crazy with that one though. It flabbergasts me.' Before launching her romance with Huges, JoJo was in a brief relationship with Australian content creator Kath Ebbs, who is non-binary. Their unceremonious breakup happened at the Celebrity Big Brother UK wrap party in April. Back in 2022, Siwa was forced to defend herself after telling Yahoo! Life she doesn't like the word 'lesbian.' She took to TikTok to clarify her statement and address scrutiny from fans, stating, 'I never said that 'lesbian' was a dirty word.' In the interview with the publication the former Lifetime star said, 'I don't like the word itself. It's just like a lot. But I mean, at the end of the day, that's what I am.' She compared it to the word 'moist,' which some people don't like because of the way it sounds phonetically. 'It's like the word moist. It's just like… ugh!' she added, much to the dismay of some of her followers. She reiterated on TikTok, 'I never would say that it's a dirty word because it is not. It's not a bad word, it's not a slur, it's especially not a word that I am ashamed of saying or ashamed of identifying as by any means. The the blond dancer added, 'I don't hate the word lesbian. Whenever someone talks to me about my sexuality I just say that I'm gay.

Chloe Brockett shows ex-boyfriend Jack Fincham what he's missing as she puts on a VERY busty display in lace bra following their sixth split
made sure all eyes were on her as she showed off her very ample assets following her bitter split from her ex-boyfriend Jack Fincham. The TOWIE beauty, 24, and former Love Island winner, 34, have had a tumultuous relationship over the years after first getting together in 2019, but last month the pair went their separate ways for a sixth time after a string of heated rows. Despite the blow, Chloe took to Instagram to show that she is getting on with her life without Jack by sharing a cheeky video of herself wearing nothing but a lace bra. In the clip, she could be seen opening a drawer, flashing a glimpse of herself clad in the plunging underwear, which highlighted her cleavage. The reality star styled the striking number with a full face of makeup and glamorous hair. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Later in the day, Chloe posted a slew of stunning snaps to her Instagram stories and appeared to be in good spirits as she tried to move on. Wearing a pastel yellow cardigan and blue jeans, Chloe posed in a sultry way down the camera, before heading to a flower market to buy herself a bouquet to brighten up her day. The sexy video and pictures come after Chloe revealed a devastating panic attack forced her to cancel a solo surgery trip abroad following her split. Taking to her Instagram Stories Chloe answered followers questions and while not divulging what surgery she had been planning, said she'd made it all the way to the airport before 'freaking out' and having to head home. She wrote: 'Guys you will not believe this... I got all the way to the airport and turned around! I freaked myself out,' 'I was going alone as all my friends are busy/working etc and I was saying oh I'll be brave and independent and had a panic attack at the airport! was nothing to do with the company just sometimes thing don't feel right and you have to go with your gut!'. Last week Chloe broke her silence on the split after Jack hinted that they had reunited for a seventh time, as he mysteriously uploaded a loved-up selfie of the couple to his Instagram Stories only to delete it moments later. Speaking exclusively to MailOnline about the social media post, Chloe said: 'I'm not sure why he posted that picture of me last night I'll be honest, but what I can say is when we were in Ibiza [where the picture was taken], it was a really beautiful time in our relationship and we were happy.' Jack recently said he doubts his relationship with Chloe is over for good, and it appears Chloe feels the same, admitting: 'I'm sure he would like to go back to that time in our relationship, as would I to some extent. 'Obviously I'm focusing on moving out and things going on in my career and Jack is focusing on a lot of things going on in his. 'I wish him well and we'll always be involved in each other's lives to some extent, whether romantically or in a friendship way, but as of right now I'm focusing on myself.' 'I've seen a lot about us slamming each other, I can assure you that is definitely not what is going on. 'Me and Jack have been in each other's lives for a really long time, six nearly seven years now, and we tried living together and it didn't work for multiple reasons, not because of my OnlyFans at all.' It comes after Jack said he doubts his relationship with Chloe is over for good but doesn't currently know what is going to happen. Jack and Chloe moved into their first home together in May 2024 and even created a joint Instagram account to share their home updates. The reality star has now explained that he has moved back in with his mum while Chloe has 'moved out into her own flat'. He told The Sun: 'Chloe and I haven't been in a great place. I'm living at my mum's and she has moved out of the house we lived in and into her own flat. I don't know what will happen between us. I still love her. I doubt it's over for good. 'We've been through a hell of a lot in the past couple of years. I didn't tell her about the bulimia, it is a hard thing to discuss with anybody. Even Mum doesn't know. 'I am a very open bloke. I cry, I wear my heart on my sleeve, but bulimia, for a bloke, I didn't think it was something I could discuss.' Chloe has also begun her new chapter in life as she revealed to her Instagram followers that she has the keys to her new place. Sharing a snap of herself opening the door to her new home, Chloe gushed: 'Today's a good day.. got the keys to my new place ✨.' It comes after Chloe took to her Instagram Stories last month to open up about living with a 'narcissist' for a year, although she didn't name anyone specifically. In now-deleted posts, she told her followers: 'I wasn't going to say anything but I'm going to say something. 'I think the scariest part about living with a narcissist is that they genuinely believe their own lies. 'So they genuinely believe the things they are saying and this version of themselves that they are presenting to the world is the true version because they see them day in and day out. 'I wasn't going to say anything but when you see this person just repeatedly projecting this absolute false version of themselves to the world. 'I had the pleasure of spending a year around this human that was nothing like the person they presented themselves. 'I just had to say something. I think narcissist are probably the most scariest people you can ever encounter in your whole entire life and just for so long I genuinely believed the lies that I was being told. 'I just woke up one day and was like "wow.. you're being lied to."' Chloe later took to her Instagram Stories to reveal that she had deleted the posts in question and said she would speak on the topic 'at a later date'. MailOnline has contacted representatives of Jack for comment. It comes after Chloe announced she is once again single and wants to 'focus on myself', as they both prepared to move into separate homes. Last month, during a Q&A session with her Instagram followers, Chloe was asked if she was still in a relationship. She responded: 'No I'm not in a relationship anymore... just want to focus on myself and the things that make me happy.' When asked if she was moving in with Jack, she explained: 'No I am moving to Brentwood on my own... I can't wait to show you all my little place it's so pretty.' In another Instagram Story, she added: 'I wanna give myself a cuddle after the last year I've had... only way is up from here'.
