JCI president urges talks after US imposes 20% tariff on Jordanian exports
Jaghbir said that the meeting would also go over suitable solutions to address the consequences of this decision, according to a JCI statement.
He explained that the US decision to impose tariffs on a number of its trade partners, including Jordan, necessitates "immediate" actions to support the national industry.
Jaghbir, who is also president of the Amman Chamber of Industry, noted that the government and private sector are working in "close" coordination to enhance domestic production capabilities and boost competitiveness.
He stressed that the Kingdom must adopt policies that ensure balance in trade relations.
Jaghbir highlighted the resilience of Jordanian industry, which has proven its ability to compete despite various challenges.
He pointed out that Jordan's trade balance with the US recorded a surplus of JD877 million ($1.24 billion) in 2024.
Jordan's exports to the US in 2024 reached JD2.208 billion ($3.12 billion), up from JD1.958 billion ($2.77 billion) in 2023, marking an increase of 12.8 per cent, the statement added.
Jaghbir described the US decision as a "clear message that nations must protect their industries and strengthen local production."

Jordan will host a meeting featuring top US, Syrian and Jordanian officials on Tuesday, exploring ways to support Syria's post-war reconstruction, said the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr Barrack said on X that the commitment to Syria's reconstruction efforts 'underscores our collective determination to move towards a future in which Syria and all of its people can live in peace, security, and prosperity'. The meeting is seen as part of a broader diplomatic push to support Syria's reconstruction efforts. Amman has increasingly engaged with Damascus as part of regional efforts to stabilise the situation and encourage international investment. The announcement follows a significant development in Syria's efforts to attract international funding. Last week, Damascus signed 12 major agreements valued at $14 billion, including a $4 billion deal with Qatar's UCC Holding to build a new airport and a $2 billion agreement with the UAE's National Investment Corporation to construct a subway in Damascus. These projects are seen as crucial for Syria's economic recovery and are expected to bring transformative changes to the country's infrastructure. Jordan ranks 1st in competitive industrial index in region — UNIDO
AMMAN — Jordan ranked first in the region for industrial sector contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024, according to the Competitive Industrial Performance (CIP) Index issued by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). The achievement underscores the "strength" of Jordan's national industry and its capacity to drive sustainable economic growth in line with the goals of the Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV), according to Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI) President Fathi Jaghbir. The announcement was made during the chamber's annual general meeting, held on Wednesday, with Jaghbir highlighting that Jordan's national exports reached a 'historic' high of some JD8.6 billion in 2024, reaching over 145 countries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. He noted that the industrial sector was the largest contributor to the national economy, accounting for more than 25.7 per cent of the GDP with a value added exceeding JD7.6 billion, reflecting its 'central' role in supporting economic growth. Despite these achievements, Jaghbir pointed to several challenges facing the sector, which could hinder its growth and the attainment of the ambitious targets outlined in the vision. The industrial sector is responsible for nearly one-third of these targets, particularly in stimulating economic growth, creating jobs and attracting investment. Key obstacles include high operational costs, especially energy prices, raw material costs and shipping and transportation fees, which reduce the competitiveness of local products.
