Iowa football TE named to John Mackey Award watch list

USA Today2 days ago
While some may choose to snub the Iowa Hawkeyes from their TEU rankings, their production and talent make that claim rather silly. Each year, the Hawkeyes trot out another playmaker at tight end who leaves an imprint on the season and is often making the jump to the NFL.
This season, Iowa could see a step forward from tight end Zach Ortwerth. The junior tight end from St. Louis, Missouri, Ortwerth, will be in his third year with the Hawkeyes and could see an expanded role beyond what he has done already.
Zach Ortwerth could take the next step and become a known name in the Big Ten in Iowa's offense with more targets. There is a belief he could be among the best in the nation, as he has been named to the John Mackey Award Watch List.
The John Mackey Award is given out each year to the nation's top tight end in college football. Iowa has laid claim to two previous winners of the award, with Dallas Clark winning it in 2002 and T.J. Hockenson wearing the crown in 2018.
In two years with the Hawkeyes, Ortwerth has appeared in 21 games for Iowa. He has reeled in 12 receptions for 187 yards and could see his 2025 totals surpass those with increased usage.

Former Iowa football LB makes Tampa Bay Buccaneers history

Let's GOOOO!!! @nickjhoops #NFLHawks📺 @NFLPlus In his NFL preseason debut on Saturday against the Tennessee Titans, former Iowa football linebacker Nick Jackson has already accomplished a Tampa Bay Buccaneers statistical feat not done since 2017. Jackson, who spent six years with the Hawkeyes and finished as the No. 2 all-time FBS leader in tackles (555), chose to sign with Tampa Bay after he went undrafted in the 2025 NFL draft this past March. During the preseason matchup against the Titans, Jackson recorded a sack of Tennessee quarterback Brandon Allen on the first play from scrimmage during a second-quarter drive and intercepted Allen with one hand just a few plays later. According to the Buccaneers Communications, Jackson becomes the first player since 2017 to record both a sack and an interception in the same preseason game. LB Nick Jackson becomes the first Buccaneer player since 2017 to record a sack and an interception in the same preseason game. While Tampa Bay's 29-7 victory is just the first of its three preseason games, Jackson's remarkable feat should reward him with a favorable impression in hopes of making the Buccaneers' 52-man roster before their first regular-season game on Sept. 7. Indiana Fever sign veteran guard Odyssey Sims to hardship contract

The Indiana Fever announced on Sunday that the team has signed veteran forward Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract following the season-ending injuries to Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald, opening up a roster spot through their qualified hardship waivers. Sims, a former No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, has averaged 11.2 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game throughout her 11-year WNBA career. During her winding WNBA journey, she has spent time with the Tulsa Shock (2014-15), Dallas Wings (2016, 2023-24), Los Angeles Sparks (2017-18, 2024-25), Minnesota Lynx (2019-20, 2022), Atlanta Dream (2021), and Connecticut Sun (2022). Her best season of her career so far was in the 2019 campaign with the Lynx, where she was named to her first WNBA All-Star team and the All-WNBA Second Team. During that season, Sims averaged 14.5 points on 41.5% from the field to go along with a career-high 5.4 assists, career-high 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks on 31:54 minutes per game through 34 contests. As a collegiate athlete, Sims played at Baylor University, where she was a part of the 2012 NCAA National Championship team and earned Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014. As Sims spent the first part of the 2025 season with the Sparks, where she averaged 9.8 points per game and 3.5 assists per game in 11 games started, she should provide a decent scoring boost and fill the void at the point guard position, with Caitlin Clark still recovering from a right groin injury. As Sims is signed on a regular hardship contract, her status on the team is not necessarily tied to the 10-available player rule that governs emergency hardship contracts. This could create some roster "gymnastics" if certain additional moves are made, as the team technically has room for up to two hardship players with Colson and McDonald out for the season and Clark out now for more than three consecutive weeks. If Sims is the only hardship player signed, the team is not required to release her once Clark returns. However, if the Fever decides to sign another hardship player, they would need to release either Sims or the second hardship player upon Clark's return. Texas A&M offers elite 2027 4-star WR out of Los Angeles (CA)

Texas A&M's 2027 recruiting class is in its beginning stages. Still, after landing four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson last weekend, coach Mike Elko and his staff have been focused on getting their feet in the door with several elite prospects, especially at wide receiver. Second-year WR coach Holmon Wiggins has already proven his recruiting prowess after helping land KC Concepcion and Mario Craver from the transfer portal, combined with 2026 commits Aaron Gregory, Madden Williams, and Mike Brown, who have all shut down their recruitment. While the Aggies are looking to add one more wide receiver to the 2026 haul, the focus has slowly shifted to 2027. Last week, Texas A&M reportedly offered 2027 four-star wide receiver Quentin Hale out of Los Angeles, California, followed by an offer to four-star wideout Jaden Upshaw out of Lee County, Georgia, over the weekend. Hale, who, like Upshaw, will likely end up a five-star recruit after his 2025 junior season. However, he has already proven his elite ability on the field. One of the more fluid route runners in the class, Hale's 6'3" frame and impressive body control have made him the go-to offensive playmaker for Cathedral High School, reeling in 1,205 yards and 15 touchdowns during his sophomore and junior campaigns, including a career high 995 yards and 14 scores last season. So far, Texas A&M joins Alabama, Georgia, and Notre Dame as the programs to offer Hale this month, and they surely won't be the last. According to 247Sports, Hale is currently positioned as the 58th-ranked prospect in the class, the 9th-ranked wide receiver prospect, and the 6th-ranked prospect in California.
