Auburn baseball: Five players join roster through transfer portal
Auburn baseball experienced a historical weekend by hosting its first-ever NCAA Super Regional, and the Tigers' coaching staff took full advantage by using it as an edge to fuel its transfer portal recruiting efforts.
While Auburn fans were cheering on the Tigers at Plainsman Park, several transfer portal targets were fielding recruiting pitches behind the scenes. The 2026 roster is now taking shape as five experienced transfers are set to join the team in their pursuit of another College World Series appearance.
Several key names will need to be replaced next season as Cooper McMurray, Carson Myers, Deric Fabian, and Sam Dutton are out of eligibility, and Ike Irish is receiving first-round chatter ahead of next month's MLB draft. Players such as Bub Terrell, Chris Rembert, Eric Snow, Chase Fralick, and Cade Belyeu are set to return next season, and the addition of these transfers will fit in nicely as Butch Thompson aims to fill the voids with the best talent available.
Here is a look at the haul Auburn baseball secured over the weekend from the transfer portal.
Jake Marciano
Auburn added a left-handed pitcher in Jake Marciano, a rising sophomore, over the weekend. Marciano was Virginia Tech's primary Saturday starter this season, and finished with a 4-2 record with a 6.08 ERA and 71 strikeouts. He struck out at least two batters in all but one of his 14 starts this season, and struck out a personal-best nine batters in the Hokies 6-1 win over Notre Dame on April 5, where he allowed one earned run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
2025 stats (Virginia Tech): 4-2, 6.08 ERA, 15 appearances (14 starts), 60 2/3 innings pitched, 70 hits, 42 runs allowed (41 earned), 71 strikeouts, 18 walks
Ryne Farber
Auburn added an infield piece in Ryan Farber, a shortstop from Texas State. The switch hitter has recorded at least two home runs, 48 hits, and 25 RBI over the last two seasons. He struck out 36 times last season, up from the nine he recorded as a freshman in 2024, but his stolen base production has increased from eight in 2024 to 17 in 2025. In the field, he fielded at a .962 clip in 2025 while recording 75 putouts and just eight errors.
2025 stats (Texas State): .267 average, 59 hits, 4 home runs, 33 RBI, 30 walks, 36 strikeouts, 17 stolen bases
Drew Whalen
Whalen, a right-handed pitcher from Western Kentucky, earned a spot on the Conference-USA All-Freshman team in 2024, and followed suit as a sophomore by building a 9-3 record in 16 starts, where he struck out 90 batters and walked 31 over 81 2/3 innings. His season-best performance came against Sam Houston State, where he struck out 10 batters and allowed zero runs on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. He led the conference in wins (9), fifth in ERA (3.53), and third in strikeouts (90).
2025 stats (Western Kentucky): 9-3 record, 3.53 ERA, 16 appearances (16 starts), 81 2/3 innings, 90 strikeouts, 31 walks.
Todd Clay
There is no place like home. That is the case for Todd Clay, who returns to his hometown club after spending the 2025 season at UAB. Clay had a magical season at UAB, where he led the team in several categories inclduing hits (69), and slugging percentage (.539). The former Blazer infielder logged a .962 clip this season with only five errors and 31 putouts.
Clay, a graduate of Auburn High School, was a member of the Tigers' 2021 state championship squad and is a member of the All-American Athletic Conference 2nd team.
2025 stats (UAB): .361 average, 53 games played (53 starts), 69 hits, 7 home runs, 51 RBI, .539 slugging percentage, six stolen bases, .962 fielding
Garett Brewer
The third pitching commit of the weekend is a left-hander formerly of Michigan State, Garrett Brewer. The rising junior appeared in 17 games in relief for the Spartans this season, where he recorded a career-high in innings pitched (34 1/3), strikeouts (41), opponent batting average (.223), and ERA (3.47). In Michigan State's 11-10 win over Minnesota on May 17, Brewer logged a season-best seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Auburn's Alex McPherson named to Lou Groza Award watch list
Alex McPherson is receiving national attention ahead of his "comeback" season. Preseason award watch season is upon us, and one Auburn Tiger is on the radar. Alex McPherson is set to return to the field full-time after an illness sidelined him for most of the 2024 season. He has caught the attention of the Palm Beach Sports Commission as he is one of 30 kickers included on the Lou Groza Award watch list that was released Friday afternoon. McPherson was 49-of-49 on extra points and was 19-of-20 on field goals with a long of 53 yards as a freshman and sophomore during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In one game last season, he connected on all three extra point attempts while going 1-for-2 on field goals in Auburn's win at Kentucky in October. He has worked to regain strength and is poised to make a strong comeback in 2025. 'It gives me some confidence that my body can hold up, that I can trust it and not have to worry about it every step of the way like I had to last year,' McPherson said in an interview with Jeff Shearer of 'I think this is definitely one of the strongest groups in the country. We have three really strong kickers, we've got three strong punters. This group is definitely special and it's going to be something to look out for this year.' USC's Caden Chittenden, Georgia's Payton Woodring, and UAB's Jonah Delange join McPherson on the Groza watch list this season. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8. Kyle Schwarber is still hitting bombs, gets IU Hall of Fame call: 'Once they tell you, you get the chills'
BLOOMINGTON – Kyle Schwarber was in Chicago, at breakfast with his wife and former IU teammate Luke Harrison and Harrison's family earlier this summer, when his phone pinged. Waiting for him was a text message from IU Associate Athletic Director Jeremy Gray, who'd also included Scott Dolson in the thread. Would Schwarber, Gray asked, have a moment to chat by phone with IU's AD? When they connected, Dolson informed Schwarber he'd been selected into the IU hall of fame, in his first year of eligibility. 'I was kind of shocked,' Schwarber said Friday. Schwarber joins a seven-person class that also includes his former classmate, Cody Zeller, that will be inducted into IU's hall of fame early next month. Schwarber will defer his induction into the future, as he cannot be present for the Sept. 5 ceremony with Philadelphia's baseball season ongoing. That won't water down the meaning of the moment for a player with a compelling argument as the best in IU baseball history. 'It wasn't even on the radar,' he said. 'Once they tell you, you get the chills. You start thinking back to everything throughout the three years, what we did there, the team that we had, just how special it was.' The weekend IU baseball grew up: Kyle Schwarber, circus tents and an upset few saw coming From 2012-14, Schwarber helped anchor a lineup that won 125 games under former IU coach Tracy Smith. In 2013, the Hoosiers reached the College World Series for the first time in program history, and backstopped that with a national seed in the 2014 NCAA tournament. They won both the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles in Schwarber's final two seasons. The Middletown, Ohio native clubbed 40 home runs, driving in 149 runs, with a college career OPS of 1.044. He finished his IU career with 93 total extra-base hits. The Cubs drafted Schwarber No. 4 overall in 2014, and he was part of their World Series-winning club two years later. Across 11 major league seasons, he's played for Chicago, Washington, Boston and Philadelphia. His 321 home runs are a record for a former Hoosier. Now, he'll be enshrined as the 17th former IU baseball player to go into the university's athletics hall of fame. 'For me personally, it's just more about trying to always be in the moment wherever I'm at,' Schwarber said. 'Just trying to be in the moment and trying to win is just what I've been taught from a young age. A lot of that started young in my life, but I think a lot of that started at Indiana.' Schwarber has remained active with his alma mater since his departure 11 years ago. He was among the many attendees at a 10-year reunion of that Omaha team in 2023, and last fall he served as guest picker when ESPN GameDay made its first-ever Saturday morning visit to Bloomington. It's to be determined when he will be able to return for his induction, given Schwarber's career shows no signs of slowing. He's hit 37 home runs so far this season for the NL East-contending Phillies. Only once in his major league career has Schwarber watched postseason baseball from home, a continuation of the success he helped achieve at Indiana. The advice he got from a Cubs teammate has served him well, and turned him into one of the winningest alumni, across any sport, in IU history. 'I think there's expectations on you, but I think the best piece of advice I got in professional baseball, Jon Lester said, 'How do you get paid? You get to be known as a winner, because if you win, that means you're doing something good,'' Schwarber said. 'Try to win the day. Try to win that game. If you're doing that, you're probably doing something good for your team.'
