
Costco beaten again in America's grocery wars... but it's taken a huge bite out of the competition
The membership-based warehouse giant is gaining ground on grocery king Walmart.
Walmart now hoovers up one in five dollars spent on groceries in America, according to new data from consumer analytics firm Numerator.
If Sam's Club, Walmart's answer to Costco, is included, then that figure rises to a staggering one in four dollars.
Walmart may be twice the size of its nearest rival Kroger, but it's Costco that rivals are losing their business to.
Costco has been snapping up grocery spending since 2019, increasing its share of the market from 7.6 percent in 2023 to 8.5 percent now, Business Insider reported.
Since Costco focuses on offering bulk quantities of a limited number of products, it it unlikely to ever take up the biggest share of the grocery market, but it is positioned to take more of it.
Costco's focus on value will be a draw for consumers looking to cut back their spending amid an uncertain economy and increased costs from tariffs.
Costco also sells a wide range of products which tend to have higher margins than groceries, helping to boost the company's bottom line.
Costco's success has also been attributed the success of its Kirkland brand.
'Costco is leveraging the fact that their entire store and organization are a single brand,' industry expert Gary Sankary recently told The Street.
'Watching big boxes cycle through the process of introducing and retiring their owned brand labels every few years to convince customers that new is better, at the same time, is confusing and, in many cases, dilutes their brand.'
'The Kirkland brand quality is not by any means diluted just because it is private label,' retail consultant Robert Amster agreed.
A recent success story is the $13.99 Kirkland 12-pack of Helles-Style Lager that has received rave reviews.
Made by the Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon, the German-style lager was released exclusively in Costco in November.
The beer is based on a recipe that won a gold medal at 2023's Great American Beer Festival.

It is now sold in every state except Texas, and a new version will be released annually.
Other Costco products that have received expert approval include the award-winning Kirkland Signature Coastal Cheddar Cheese.
The 15-month-aged cheese, made at a farm on the UK's Dorset coast, costs just $10 for a two-pound block.
Costco members also enjoy a range of perks including access to free hearing screenings, a generous returns policy and much-loved food court deals.
As well as the legendary $1.50 hot dog and soda offering Costco recently reintroduced its hot turkey and provolone sandwich.

Dozens of reviews have appeared on Trustpilot in recent weeks from Costco shoppers who paid for orders but never received them, with some claiming to have bought items costing hundreds of pounds. Costco responded to several customers on the review site, writing: "We were unable to locate an order with the details provided and suspect that the purchase may have been made through a fraudulent website posing as Costco. "Unfortunately, there has been a recent increase in fraudulent websites impersonating Costco." In another Trustpilot response to a customer who had fallen for the scam, it urged shoppers to "check the URL which is displayed when shopping online". It added: "Our site displays at the beginning of the web address." Some Costco shoppers may have lost hundreds of pounds to the scam. In one review, a customer claims they bought a Bosch router table, which are on sale for up to £500 from some online retailers, but had not received it. Costco responded saying their order could not be found and it was likely bought through a fake website. Another customer said they ordered a keter Manor outdoor shed, which retails for over £200 on the high street, and were told by Costco they had likely been scammed. Avoid being ripped off by car hire companies with these four top tips It's not just Costco that has been targeted by fake websites - experts told The Sun that the scam is on the rise. 'Criminals are increasingly creating convincing looking websites that mimic well known retailer that lure shoppers in with seemingly genuine branding and tempting offers," said Jake Moore, global security adviser at ESET. "These sites often harvest lots of personal and payment information or take money without delivering goods." He said they're also becoming "incredibly easy to make" with the use of AI, as it means scammers no longer need to know how to code to create fake websites. "The end results are often near perfect copies too," he said. Starling Bank financial crime specialist Sarah Lenette adds: With the rise of AI, scammers have everything they need to create very convincing retail sites in very little time, which include all of the correct branding, products and relevant offers and deals." One common way you can end up on a fake website is by clicking on a fake ad on social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok or Instagram. "Users then unknowingly find themselves on a site believing they are on the legitimate retailer," Jake says. It comes after a raft of fake Wilko websites offering huge discounts were set up by scammers after the retailer fell into administration in 2023. Cath Kidston and Joules have also been targeted by the scams. How to spot a fake website While scammers have become more sophisticated, there are several ways you can keep an eye out for fake websites when shopping online. Which? Consumer Expert Rob Lilley-Jones says you should avoid any deals that seem "too good to be true" - as they usually are. "Another tell-tale sign of a scam website will be poor spelling and bad grammar," he adds. Look out for any websites that don't have a physical address and a phone number and email address to contact them. "If they don't, it's a red flag," Rob says. He also suggests using a domain checker like to see when the website was set up. "If it's recent, and the company claims to be a well-known one like Costco, it's a scam," he says. Sarah Lenette adds that you should be wary of any URLs for UK retailers that end in .org or .net. You should also avoid clicking on social media ads that you're unsure about, she says. "Always search for the retailer on a search engine and head to them independently, as well as checking for independent reviews on sites such as TrustPilot," she says. The historic Westminster pub that will soon reopen after a massive £950,000 makeover
A central London pub is set to reopen after having almost a million pounds pumped into it. The White Horse and Bower on Horseferry Road has been closed since January 2024, but is set to relaunch next month. The Shepherd Neame pub – which dates back to 1816 and was rebuilt in 1894 – will reopen on September 10, featuring a restored tile facade, new awning, bespoke hand-painted swing sign, herringbone timber floor, rear booths with stained-glass screens and a reclaimed oak bar which has been repositioned in order to make the pub feel more welcoming. The British Guild of Beer Writers also reports that there will also be a timber fireplace and hand-painted, Edwardian-style Lincrusta wall finish. The Pimlico pub's operations manager Ryan Torrie commented: 'The White Horse and Bower is a fantastic pub in an incredible location. Our aim with this project is to preserve and celebrate its unique character while introducing a stylish, new experience. With a vibrant food and drink offer, live events, and beautiful surroundings, we're confident it will become a local favourite once again. We can't wait to open the doors and welcome everyone back.' The pub's new menu will feature Whitstable Bay beer-battered haddock with chips, hot smoked salmon niçoise, and a 5oz grilled sirloin with Parmesan and garlic butter, as well as burgers and brunch served on the weekends. As well as Shepherd Neame's Kentish beers the drinks menu will include cocktails (margaritas, mojitos, espresso martinis and negronis), as well as wine from Kent.
