Jared Cannonier avoided his first three-fight losing skid on Saturday when he scored a critical rebound win over Gregory Rodrigues at UFC Fight Night 251.
Cannonier (18-8 MMA, 11-8 UFC) showed that he still has life in an increasingly crowed middleweight division when the former title challenger turned back surging contender Rodrigues (16-6 MMA, 7-3 UFC) by fourth-round TKO in their headlining bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Wow, Canonier steals round 3 with that short elbow and GnP and now seals the deal in round 4 with a TKO stoppage. RoboCop struggles again with efficiency/pacing himself.

Francis Ngannou explains his criticisms of PFL Africa launch, responds to Donn Davis

PFL's long-discussed debut trip to Africa turned out to be a success in July, showcasing some of the promotion's top talents like Dakota Ditcheva and Johnny Eblen. However, PFL Africa ambassador and heavyweight superstar Francis Ngannou was noticeably missing from the arena come fight night. PFL founder Donn Davis expressed his disappointment with Ngannou's absence following the conclusion of the launch event. Davis claimed not to know why the Cameroonian puncher didn't attend the event, which bothered Ngannou. The former UFC heavyweight champion explained this week to Uncrowned exactly what led to his decision to not attend the first two Africa shows he pushed PFL to create. "I don't think it was something [Davis] should have brought out there [to tell people], right?" Ngannou said on "The Ariel Helwani Show." "At least if it was me, I wouldn't put it out there now, because he gets in the position where we have to bring up context [of] why didn't I come there. He did know why I didn't come. I've been waiting on this for two years — this was a big part of it. ... I wasn't OK with something, but I wasn't the one that was going to [put it] out [into the public conversation]. "If you want to know what exactly is the reason why I wasn't there, I wasn't very OK with the first PFL Africa event seeming to be like an undercard," Ngannou continued. "Quoting [Davis], we worked a lot for that, for [the launch of] PFL Africa. I hoped the PFL Africa debut would have at least had its glory, its moment. That wasn't my decision. I wasn't down for it, but I expressed my feelings to them." The keys to the proverbial castle in PFL were essentially handed to Ngannou upon his arrival to the promotion in 2023. Along with his high-value contract, the signing came with a role in spearheading PFL Africa as a sub-promotion under the overall PFL umbrella. But Ngannou believes his vision wasn't necessarily met — he hoped the launch of PFL Africa would ideally consist exclusively of African talent. "This is what it's about," Ngannou said. "You talk about something for two years, you expect this glorious moment, and I couldn't explain [to people why the card turned out how it did] if I had been there. It looks like I had been in a very bad position to explain how the PFL Africa I've been talking about has become an undercard. So, on that perspective, I'm not facing this. That was the main reason. "What was worse for me was I have seen some people talking about it, but they didn't even realize Aug. 9 was the second [PFL Africa] event." Despite holding down a lucrative spot on the PFL roster for more than two years, Ngannou has only fought once for the promotion, when he made his debut this past October with a first-round stoppage of 2023 PFL heavyweight tournament winner Renan Ferreira. As part of his deal, Ngannou has been allowed to fight freely in big-money boxing matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua during the period. Ngannou said he hasn't had any formal discussions with PFL officials regarding a potential return to the cage in 2025, but has prodded them via email recently. He's under the impression PFL does not have a suitable opponent for him at the moment and hasn't spoken to Davis since their recent disagreements. The relationship between PFL and Ngannou appeared to be in a good place until Davis' comments. From Ngannou's perspective, things are still fine between both parties; it's just a matter of understanding where each is coming from going forward. "So far, I would say we've had a good relationship," Ngannou said. "We have two businesses together. One is PFL Africa, and then one is me as a fighter and PFL as a promoter. But again, everything doesn't always run smooth. It wasn't like, 'OK, this is not working.' This just works like, 'Oh, I don't agree with this. I think it should be like this,' and somebody gives his own point of view. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't work out. "Personally I don't think we are in that point, as you can see, 'Oh, we have a bad relationship.' No, we have a good relationship. We are just working things out. "I think the problem here is from a culture difference, which they are struggling to understand. The African culture aspect of things. I have to try to make sure that's being considered. So I think that's what is getting lost here. Because without that, the relationship would be qualified as a great relationship."

Morning Report: Demetrious Johnson tells fans ‘don't watch UFC' if you don't like Khamzat Chimaev's style

Demetrious Johnson has a simple solution for fans tired of watching wrestling-heavy fights: Change the channel. During a live YouTube reaction stream for UFC 319, Johnson gave his two cents on Saturday's main event and broke down how Khamzat Chimaev grappled his way to a dominant decision win over Dricus du Plessis to capture the middleweight title. Johnson then addressed viewer comments, several of which were critical of Chimaev controlling du Plessis for 25 minutes without doing much significant damage. Johnson sympathized, then reminded fans they have the power to choose what they consume. 'If you guys don't want to watch grappling and wrestling and jiu-jitsu, don't watch UFC,' Johnson said. 'Go watch ONE Championship, go watch Lion Fighting, go watch Glory, go watch kickboxing, go watch Muay Thai, right? It's very simple. You guys are complaining about something that's a very simple problem to fix. 'For example, let's say Khamzat's about to fight again, you don't want to watch his style, all you've got to do is go like this, you see this button right here, it's called 'off button.' You don't have to see Khamzat wrestle, it's a very simple problem to fix. You guys are making it a bigger deal than it is.' Watching the fight live, Johnson was critical of Chimaev not finding positions to land more impactful ground-and-pound or to chase submissions. That didn't matter in the end as 'DDP' failed to prevent Chimaev from repeatedly taking him down and either smothering him or taking his back. Johnson was on Chimaev's side when it came to referee Marc Goddard calling for a standup and reset of position on a couple of occasions, decisions that Johnson believes favored du Plessis. 'I disagree with this,' Johnson said during the fight. 'That should have never happened because the same thing's going to happen. Basically, what the ref did, the ref gave DDP a better chance to fight. What just happened with the referee's decision should have never happened. There's no reason why the ref should have stood them up. 'This is a fight. It's up to DDP to get to a better position to be able to better himself to be able to fight. The fact that the ref allowed DDP to get out of a very down position from Khamzat Chimaev is bullshit.' Regardless of how entertaining Chimaev's performance was or wasn't, it's clear the undefeated fighter and now UFC champion is a tough puzzle for any middleweight to solve. Reinier de Ridder, Anthony Hernandez, Caio Borralho, and Nassourdine Imavov are all in the mix to be the opponent for Chimaev's first title defense, and as of now Chimaev has no preference as to who is next. Whichever direction the matchmakers go in, Johnson knows that challenger better have their wrestling shoes on. 'I honestly thought Khamzat was going to be able to finish DDP if he was able to take DDP down, but I also thought DDP was going to do a better job of defending the takedowns and he wasn't able to stop the takedown,' Johnson said. 'That was the story of that fight, so moving forward, whoever fights Khamzat, they need to decide—like, Imavov or Borralho, they fight Sept. 6, whoever wins that fight, if they do not come with wrestling defense or a good jiu-jitsu attacking style like going after the legs, elevating Khamzat, they're going to lose. I feel totally comfortable saying that. They're going to lose. 'Because Khamzat does not want to stand. He wants to show, show, shoot. Show, show, shoot. Show, show, shoot. So if those guys don't have a ground game or have an answer for his wrestling, it's going to be the same exact thing that happened to DDP.' Inevitable. Khamzat Chimaev is the new UFC middleweight champion. Nope. Jon Jones fighting at UFC White House? Dana White calls it 'a billion-to-one' chance. Nope again. And he's not loving those 10,000-seat UFC APEX stories either! Next? Lerone Murphy smoked Aaron Pico at UFC 319 and he has the featherweight champ's attention. How? One fight before Murphy's unbelievable spinning elbow knockout, Carlos Prates did almost the exact same thing to Geoff Neal. Important. Joseph Morales won The Ultimate Fighter 33 to cap off yet another magical season. MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and Alexander K. Lee make their pick for who Chimaev should defend against first in the latest On to the Next One. UFC 319 post-fight show. UFC 319 post-fight scrums. I still can't believe he said this. They'll be back. Cute. Life after. Champ and future champ? That's one way to celebrate Premier League kickoff weekend. We all thought it would be Khamzat early, DDP late, but what we got was something completely different. Personally, I found the UFC 319 main event mesmerizing, even if it's a fight that I will never, ever watch again in its entirety. Chimaev defied expectations and became champion, that's how I'm choosing to frame it. Now get back to smeshing, big guy. Kamaru Usman highlights 'a lot of mistakes' Khamzat Chimaev made at UFC 319

Kamaru Usman thinks Khamzat Chimaev was trying to preserve energy throughout his title fight at UFC 319. Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) outgrappled Dricus Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) en route to a dominant unanimous decision to claim the middleweight champion in Saturday's headliner at United Center in Chicago. Prior to the fight, Usman questioned Du Plessis' grappling after realizing the best wrestler he had fought was Derek Brunson, who took him down and controlled him for more than two minutes. Chimaev was able to take down Du Plessis 12 times and control him for more than 21 minutes, but never came close to finishing him. Usman explained why. "Khamzat Chimaev possessed this one skill that can make you look like a middle school wrestler," Usman said on his "Pound 4 Pound" podcast with Henry Cejudo. "That's all that was, and even watching that, Khamzat made a lot of mistakes that I think would have got him that finish before that third round. He got to a position where it was so easy, it was almost him controlling himself. He had to control his own emotions. He had to control his gas tank because that's not easy to dominate a guy like that. Everything is working because, in your mind, you're wanting resistance. Resistance is how you gauge how much output I need to put out. If everything is going right, you can't gauge how much output to put out. "Maybe you might try finish it in that first round, then you get up in the second like, 'Whoa, I can't even lift my arms. Why am I so tired?' Khamzat did a phenomenal job because he had so much success with this. But the one area I think he could have had a lot of success is when he was on the back, and Dricus was on all fours, Khamzat kind of coasted, kind of landed some knees to the thigh. He could have one, sucked him back, or you could have put that weight on Dricus Du Plessis' arms, driving that head down, kept driving and driving. I guarantee you do that for a round, Dricus Du Plessis either wants to go on his back, or he gives up these positions a lot easier, (and) that allows you to have that choke." Usman gave Chimaev one of his toughest tests when he almost rallied in a majority decision loss on short notice at UFC 294. The former UFC welterweight champion took the fight up a weight class and won Round 3 on two of the judges' scorecards, and Rounds 2 and 3 on one of them.
