FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup Showdown Set for Athens in 2027
FIBA announced that the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2027 will be held in Athens, Greece, from September 16-19, in the city's historic Syntagma Square.
The famous Syntagma Square, located in front of the Old Royal Palace, home of the Greek Parliament building, will be transformed into a dynamic setting for a four-day festival of 3x3 basketball action.
The top men's and women's teams from 12 European countries will battle it out on the half-court for the European title. As the final Europe Cup competition before the LA28 Olympic Games, fans can expect high-intensity, world-class 3x3 basketball action.
'Having hosted the first FIBA 3x3 World Cup in 2012, Athens holds a very special place in the history of 3x3 basketball,' said FIBA 3x3 Managing Director Alex Sanchez. 'It has proven itself as a world-class host and we are excited to return on the road to LA28. Bringing the world's most thrilling urban team sport discipline to one of the world's great basketball cities, in a landmark location, is the perfect combination for an unforgettable competition.'

The FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2027 will unite thousands of local and international fans of all ages for an all-action urban festival atmosphere. It is the second time in recent years that Athens has been chosen to host an international 3x3 event. In 2022, the city successfully hosted the FIBA 3x3 U17 Europe Cup.
Following the successful co-hosting of the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2025, which concluded with the Final Phase in Piraeus, Greece continues to strengthen its presence on the international basketball stage. Greece has been recently confirmed as one of the hosts for the FIBA EuroBasket 2029 and will host the ninth edition of the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in 2028, further showcasing its commitment to the development of the sport at all levels.

Kylian Mbappe struck from the penalty spot as Real Madrid beat a dogged Osasuna 1-0 on Tuesday to make a winning start in La Liga under new coach Xabi Alonso. The France striker, last season's European Golden Shoe winner, scored early in the second half after he was fouled in the area by Osasuna defender Juan Cruz. Alonso's side had to show patience against an Osasuna team that finished ninth last term, with the hosts largely restricted to long-range efforts from centre-backs Huijsen and Eder Militao in the first half. Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera was equal to both, while Mbappe failed to connect cleanly after being picked out by Vinicius Junior before he curled another shot wide as Madrid struggled to break down their opponents. But Mbappe grabbed the only goal six minutes after half-time after he went down following a clumsy challenge by Cruz as he tried to cut past the defender. Mbappe, who was La Liga's top scorer with 31 goals in his first season in Spain, got up and running for the new campaign as he sent Herrera the wrong way from the spot. Alonso handed 18-year-old Argentine winger Franco Mastantuono his debut midway through the second half as Madrid controlled the game and seldom looked troubled. Ante Budimir headed over in a rare opportunity for Osasuna and Mastantuono was denied late on by Herrera. Osasuna finished the match with 10 men with Abel Bretones sent off in stoppage time for throwing an arm to block the run of Gonzalo Garcia. Italian champion Napoli sign defender Gutiérrez from Girona - World
Italian champion Napoli signed defender Miguel Gutiérrez on Tuesday from Girona, which lost another star player from the club's surprising third-place finish in the Spanish league in 2024. Napoli did not disclose the transfer fee for the 24-year-old left-back who reportedly signed on a five-year deal for 18 million euros ($21 million). The former Real Madrid youth player was a standout performer when unheralded Girona placed third in La Liga two seasons ago after leading the standings as late as January. FIFA Considering Biennial Club World Cup Starting 2029
Rana Atef British media reports have revealed that FIFA is studying the possibility of staging the Club World Cup every two years, beginning in 2029, a move that could further intensify the already packed international calendar. FIFA is also exploring the possibility of scrapping the June international break to ease fixture congestion and create space for tournaments, though UEFA is opposing the idea as it clashes with the Nations League finals. Meanwhile, FIFA is set to launch a formal bidding process for host nations starting from the 2029 edition. Unlike this year's U.S. tournament, which was awarded directly, future editions will be contested through open applications.
