RUTLAND, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Tariffs will be center stage as Vermont's junior senator talks with business owners, manufacturers, and community members to listen to their concerns first hand on Wednesday.
Two events are planned. The first, in Manchester starting at 1:00 p.m., is an invitation-only event where Senator Peter Welch will be joining together local businesses and manufacturers at the Orvis fishing rod shop. The second will be at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland starting at 5:30 p.m. and is open to the public with RSVP (link here). Senator Welch has previously hosted roundtables in Stowe, Newport, St. Albans, and virtually.
Vermont City Marathon hits the ground running Sunday
The meeting in Rutland is described as a 'community conversation' where Vermonters are welcome to discuss 'what more needs to be done to make our communities more affordable, our businesses more successful, and our families healthier and safer.'
The events follow the senator's recent trip to Ottawa, the capital of Canada, where he met with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both small business and larger corporations have expressed concern over the economic effects of the tariffs newly instituted by the Trump administration. Welch has opposed the tariffs on Canada and other countries.
According to the office of the United State Trade Representative, Vermont exported $645 million in goods to Canada in 2024, by far its largest market for exports. Taiwan was a distant second at $249 million.

Vermont's State Treasurer joins finance class at Winooski High School

WINOOSKI, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – Winooski finance students finished off their year managing money by meeting the state's top money manager. Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak attended a personal finance class at Winooski High School taught by Courtney Poquette, as he did in 2023 and 2024. He was first elected in November 2022. Pieciak wrote in a Facebook post, 'Too many Vermonters grow up without learning how to manage their money. At Winooski High School, Ms. Poquette's personal finance course is filling that gap – helping her students make better decisions that will pay dividends in the future. 'It's proof of the impact a great teacher can have, especially for those who don't learn these skills at home or in their community.' Vermont musicians tune up for international Make Music Day Courtney Poquette's personal finance course has been previously covered by ABC22/FOX44. The class, which is required for students in Winooski but not in most of Vermont, helps students learn about making good purchasing decisions and common business practices among other things. Pieciak was born in Brattleboro and now lives in Winooski with his partner. Abbott Signs House Bill 2: $8.5B Boost for Texas Public Schools

Salado, TX (FOX 44) — Governor Greg Abbott signed a historic school funding bill into law during a ceremony in Salado. The $8.5 billion measure, called House Bill 2, establishes dedicated funding streams for public schools to use on targeted initiatives. The funding includes $1.3 billion for insurance and teacher pensions, $4.2 billion for teacher pay raises, over $2.2 billion for special education, childcare, and school safety, and $800 million for rural schools. The new school funds are restricted to specific uses, such as teacher pay raises limiting flexibility. 'House Bill 2 ensures that our schools are funded better than ever. Teacher pay, instead of funding, are at all-time highs, reading and math performance is on an upward trajectory. And students will be better prepared for the workforce than ever before,' Governor Greg Abbott said. In contrast, increasing the basic allotment would have allowed schools to spend the money as they saw fit. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
