At just 22 years old, Jabari Smith Jr. isn't just putting pen to paper on a deal—he's committing to be the face of
Houston
's future. The Rockets' move to offer him a fully guaranteed $122 million speaks volumes.
He's more than just a promising forward now; he's a foundational piece of the franchise. After a playoff run and a Durant trade that didn't involve him, one thing is clear—Smith is at the heart of Houston's ambitious plans.
Houston Rockets
bet big on youth by locking in
Jabari Smith Jr
through 2031
The extension is said to include a massive $122 million commitment over five years—completely guaranteed—putting Smith among the highest-paid young forwards in the league. At only 22, Smith is already seen as a key piece of the Rockets' future plans, especially after the big trade that brought Kevin Durant to Houston.
In fact, the Rockets turned down offers from Phoenix to include Smith in the trade, making their stance clear.
Last season Smith averaged a respectable 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds in 57 games and that was with a broken left hand during the month of January keeping him off the court to a large extent. More surprising is the way he played in the playoffs, shooting 45.5% behind the arc in fewer than 20 minutes per game, which proves that he can do more when needed.
His rim-protecting ability, particularly his ability to stretch the floor, is what makes him the perfect stretch-four of the present era.
This announcement is a piece of a wider early offseason activity by the Rockets. Besides locking in Smith, Houston has also extended Fred VanVleet, Jae'Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday, Jeff Green, Steven Adams, and even coach Ime Udoka. Smith's extension not only maintains stability on the court but also establishes a foundation for Houston to grow, even as they aim for titles with superstars like Durant.
Still, this agreement carries increased expectations. A total guarantee indicates that the organization has faith in Smith to evolve into a dependable two-way contributor. With his shooting on the rise and his defensive instincts still sharp, this extension isn't just a precaution—it's a wholehearted acceptance of his potential.

Smith's extension is way bigger than the usual rookie deals and raises the stakes for his next performance. He's got to keep up that playoff shooting vibe and steer clear of the ups and downs that marked his regular season. If he can juggle scoring, rebounding, and shooting while keeping fit, Smith might turn into the player Houston hoped for when they picked him No. 3 overall in 2022 from Auburn.

Steve Smith Hits Back At Aussie Legend Over Batting Coach Criticism: 'Not One...'

Last Updated: Steve Smith has hit back at Ian Healy over his criticism of Australia batting coach Michael Di Venuto. Steve Smith gave a stern reply to Australia legend Ian Healy for his criticism of the Test batting coach Michael Di Venuto for the team's top-order collapses on Monday (June 30). Smith said that Di Venuto has been 'wonderful' for the team, shifting the blame to the batters, saying nobody can 'hold their hand' on the pitch. Healy, in an interview with SEN, said Australia had 'regressed in performance' under the tutelage of his 'good friend' Di Venuto and demanded that the batting coach take some 'pressure' over it. He was speaking after Australia's 159-run win over the West Indies in the first of the ongoing three-match series, where a new-look top-four couldn't manage a single half-century across the two innings. '(Di Venuto's) not the one out there actually doing the batting," Smith told reporters ahead of the second Test. 'Guys have to be able to figure it out themselves out in the middle sometimes. You can't have someone holding your hand out there. He works as hard as anyone. He knows batting inside out. He's seen cricket all around the world, and knows all the conditions. He's done a wonderful job for a long time now, and the boys really enjoyed working with him," he added. Australia had Josh Inglis batting at number four in place of Smith for the match, with Sam Konstas returning at the top alongside Usman Khawaja. Cameron Green played number three for the second time, too, leaving Khawaja as the only one with more than five Tests of experience at the position. Smith's unique recovery and fielding worries Smith is now set to return for the second match, and as coach Andrew McDonald has already confirmed, he'll take the number four spot back. He has recovered from his little-finger injury suffered while fielding during the 2025 World Test Championship final against South Africa. 'I looked straight down and I was like, 'That doesn't look right. That looks pretty disgusting.' I wasn't sure of the extent of the damage," Smith recalled about his injury. Smith underwent recovery in New York, but it was far from normal. 'My mate actually told me about it — underneath this bridge, there was a batting cage, and he was able to throw me a few balls there. It was nice to hit a few balls," Smith added. More than his batting, the right-hander is worried about not being able to field close-in on the slips anymore. 'It'll be just training as normal, and then probably fielding some balls in front of the wicket, which would probably be the strangest thing for me. I don't think I've ever done that in a Test match," he added. About the Author Cricketnext Staff First Published: June 30, 2025, 09:49 IST

IND vs ENG: ‘Cannot be one-hundred wonder' — Sanjay Manjrekar's stern message to senior India batter

India's Rishabh Pant celebrates with batting partner KL Rahul AP/PTI(AP06_23_2025_000341A) India may have lost the first Test of the ongoing five-match series against England, but the performance of their top-order batters was a major positive to take forward. At Headingley, while the lower order collapsed in both innings, the likes of Shubman Gill , KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored centuries, and Rishabh Pant smashed brilliant hundreds in each innings to keep India in the fight. Looking ahead to the crucial second Test at Edgbaston, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is confident that Pant will continue his sublime form. Speaking on Star Sports' 'Game Plan' show, Manjrekar praised Pant's hunger and determination to make big scores in the longest format. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I think he (Rishabh Pant) will carry on because it seems like he enjoys batting in Test cricket. Any batter who gets two hundreds in a single Test, it takes a lot out of you mentally. To do it again within 48 hours shows the hallmark of an exceptional player,' Manjrekar said. India's Day 2 at the Nets in Edgbaston | IND vs ENG Test Series Highlighting another senior batter, Manjrekar pointed out that KL Rahul must keep his good form going for the remainder of the series. 'Rishabh Pant enjoys playing Tests. He has not scored enough runs in recent times, so he is hungry. I see him continuing this form, but there is another senior batter who now has no choice but to carry his form through the series. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Indian cricket needs him badly and KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer,' he added. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? India will have to bounce back strongly in the second Test, which starts on July 2 in Birmingham. The challenge could get tougher with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss the match for workload management. England, on the other hand, have bolstered their squad with Jofra Archer, adding more firepower to their pace attack. With the series on the line, India's top order will once again have to lead the fightback in challenging English conditions. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story.
