Govt: Secured over 40 plus GI tags for products including Kolhapuri chappal
The move aims to strengthen branding and secure copyright protection for local artisans and their products.
'We have secured more than 40 plus GI tags for Maharashtra specific products including the Kolhapuri chappal. That is why it has become an issue for Prada now and they are in a legal soup. Some very positive news will come for kolhapuri chappal makers in the coming few days due to this GI tags that we have obtained. We are now in the process of getting 30 more GI tags in the coming few months,' Maharashtra Development Commissioner Deependra Singh Kushwah said during an industry-oriented conclave in Mumbai organised by Loksatta at the World Trade Center.
Kolhapuri chappals have the geographical indication (GI) tag that certifies how a product originates from a specific geographical area and possesses qualities or a reputation because of that origin. A GI tag helps preserve traditional knowledge, cultural heritage, and the livelihoods of its local practitioners.
Kushwaha said that Maharashtra was also committed to facilitate the building of brands manufactured in India that command global respect and value.
He said that the state government has proposed a One District One Product (ODOP) scheme where 72 unique products, two from each district that reflect the state's rich cultural and economic diversity, will be nurtured. The scheme is aimed at enhancing value chains, boost market access, and empower local producers.
The programme includes capacity building by training producers to understand market dynamics, consumer demands, and business development strategies and also collaborate with institutions like the National Institute of Design to improve product aesthetics, packaging, and marketability.
It includes setting up district-level quality testing laboratories, to ensure product quality and consumer trust and authenticate the value chain.
Kushwah said that Maharashtra is also the only state where all districts are engaged in export activity with five key districts contributing 75 per cent of the state's total exports, and the next five accounting for an additional 20 per cent.
The remaining 26 districts contribute to 5 per cent of the total exports.
He said that the states aim was to increase the total value of exports from all the districts for which the Maharashtra government is currently supporting 30 export-oriented industrial parks, and over the next 4–5 years, these parks will receive targeted grants and policy support.

HC rejects plea against Prada
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against Prada in the case of alleged copying of Kolhapuri Chappal design. The court said that as per the Geographical Indications law , the affected parties (the producers associations) should have come forward to defend their case. Kolhapuri chappal is a GI products under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act. Five lawyers had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court demanding that the Italian fashion house Prada should pay monetary compensation to the artisans making Kolhapuri chappals. Prada had presented a toe ring sandal collection at Milan that was allegedly inspired by India's Kolhapuri Chappal. The court told the five lawyers that the registered owners of the GI product should come to the court seek redressal. However, the GI for Kolhauri Chappal was awarded to the jointly two government agencies of Maharashtra and Karnataka and not to the manufacturers' associations like in case of many other GI products. These agencies have not approached the courts to defend their GI rights. Instead of taking the legal course, industry body Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture is looking to work with Prada to help local artisans.

Loro Piana put under court administration
An Italian court has placed LVMH group's high-end Italian cashmere firm Loro Piana under judicial administration for a year after allegedly uncovering worker abuse inside its supply chain, in the latest in a string of cases that have tainted the image of Italy's luxury brands . Loro Piana Spa is the fifth fashion company to be targeted by the same Milan court for similar labour issues since 2023, according to the 26-page ruling reviewed by Reuters on Monday. Units of fashion brands Valentino, LVMH's Dior, Italy's Armani, and Italian handbag company Alviero Martini were also placed under administration. The court found that Loro Piana, which makes cashmere clothing, subcontracted its production through two front firms with no actual manufacturing capacity to Chinese-owned workshops in Italy that it said exploited workers. The Milan court found Loro Piana "culpably failed" to adequately oversee its suppliers in order to pursue higher profits, according to the ruling. The court in its ruling also appointed an external administrator to verify the company meets all the judges' demands that it implement effective tools to control its supply chain. Loro Piana declined to comment. LVMH was not immediately available for comment. The administration will be lifted earlier if the unit brings its practices into line with legal requirements, as was the case with Dior, Armani and Alviero Martini previously targeted by the court. LVMH, the world's biggest luxury group, acquired 80% of Loro Piana in July 2013, leaving 20% in the hands of the Italian family that founded the company. In their ruling, the Milan judges wrote that despite the previous cases being widely reported "this production chain, headed by Loro Piana, has continued to operate until now". In its ruling, the court also emphasises that this kept going even after representatives of Italy's fashion brands signed an accord in May with legal and political authorities to fight worker exploitation. The owners of the contracting and subcontracting companies are under investigation by Milan prosecutors for exploiting workers and employing people off the books. Loro Piana Spa itself faces no criminal probe. The prosecutors in the case said the violation of rules among fashion companies in Italy was "a generalised and consolidated manufacturing method". Italy is home to thousands of small manufacturers that make up 50%-55% of global luxury goods production, consultancy Bain has calculated.
