Where Georgia football's quarterback competition stands after their spring game
The Georgia Bulldogs may have found their new starting quarterback. Redshirt junior Gunner Stockton looked impressive in Georgia's spring game despite one costly turnover in the end zone.
Stockton helped the Red Team (first-team offense) win 34-17 and gave Georgia fans a lot of reasons to be confident in him. Stockton, who helped Georgia take home the 2024 SEC championship, connected on several deep passes in G-Day.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound quarterback passed for 309 yards and threw two touchdowns and one interception. He completed 17 of 34 passes against the Black Team defense (first-team defense). Stockton was particularly accurate with his deep ball in the second half. He found wide receivers Jeremy Bell and Sacovie White on second half touchdown passes.
Kirby Smart talks about how Gunner Stockton has improved
Stockton statistically outperformed projected back up quarterback Ryan Puglisi, who completed 23 of 49 passes for 224 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. However, Puglisi, a redshirt freshman, did not look bad. He was much more effective in his lone series with the first-team offense.
"Confidence, understanding the offense, knowing when to take a shot, which he didn't do a great job today," said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart on how Stockton has improved. "He had a couple times where he could have thrown the ball or checked it down. He took shots that he probably didn't have to."
Stockton has some mobility, but he's not a dual-threat rushing threat that Georgia can rely on. Stockton finished the day with just five carries for three yards. However, he's no sitting duck. Stockton also uses his mobility to extend plays.
"But he's (Gunner Stockton) done a really good job with his feet, his legs. He made plays with his legs today, and I thought Ryan (Puglisi) did too. They're both good athletes that can extend plays," added Smart.
Stockton appears to have the edge in the Georgia quarterback battle after spring practice. Stockton won the majority of the first-team reps and has a significant experience edge over Puglisi, who has never appeared in a college football regular season game.
Kirby Smart evaluates Ryan Puglisi
"Ryan's (Puglisi) done a good job. Ryan continues to get better since it's his first spring. I mean, he ain't got a chance to compete and do much. He has growth. He's still probably a little bit behind Gunner in terms of the knowledge of the offense, but he's catching up in regards to that, right? He's getting experience, knowing when to pull it down and run it, when to throw it away, just game management decisions. He's not gonna do anything but get better," said Smart.
Kirby Smart has not named a starter yet, but we'd be surprised if Puglisi makes up enough ground to earn starting consideration before Georgia's regular season opener against Marshall on Aug. 30.

ESPN ranks the top 25 college football plays since 2000: Which Alabama moments made list?

ESPN ranks the top 25 college football plays since 2000: Which Alabama moments made list? Over the past 25 college football seasons, the Alabama Crimson Tide have had no shortage of big moments on the national stage. That's what happens when you win six national championships in a span of 12 seasons, as Alabama did under coach Nick Saban from 2009-2020. The second closest to the Crimson Tide in hardware since the dawn of the 21st century: the LSU Tigers -- a program Saban helped build from a perennial underachiever -- and the Ohio State Buckeyes with three apiece. It's no surprise then that some of the biggest moments involving Alabama teams from Saban's 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa made their way onto ESPN's ranking of the top 25 college football plays since 2000. That includes both the joys from Alabama's victories as well as the anguish in their defeats. A total of five plays featuring Alabama football made ESPN's list. Here's a breakdown of Alabama's appearances in ESPN's top 25 college football plays from the first quarter of the 21st century. '2nd and 26': Tua Tagovailoa to DeVonta Smith touchdown ranked Alabama's best play Alabama has no shortage of thrilling moments that fans can describe in graphic detail from the snap of the ball until the final whistle, but ESPN ranked '2nd and 26' against Georgia in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 8, 2018 at No. 4 overall on its list. Tua Tagovailoa's dagger to DeVonta Smith in overtime gave Alabama a 26-23 win and its fifth championship in eight years. ESPN's Bill Connelly said of the play: "The national title game at the end of the 2017 season came at you in waves. Georgia dominated and led 13-0 at halftime. Alabama subbed in freshman Tua Tagovailoa and charged back to tie the score, but the Tide missed an easy field goal attempt at the buzzer. Georgia moved backward in OT but nailed a 51-yard field goal. Tagovailoa took an atrocious sack and lost 16 yards. Bama had control but lost it, and now Georgia was about to finally topple the Tide. "And then, without a timeout and with the building still buzzing, Tagovailoa calmly looked off the safeties, then fired back to a fellow freshman for the most thrilling, breathless ending to a national title game in the College Football Playoff era." 'Gravedigger': late Alabama touchdown to bury Auburn ranked top 20 college football play Speaking of clutch throws, few if any in the history of the Iron Bowl were as incredible as Jalen Milroe's game-winning pass to Isaiah Bond in the corner of the end-zone on Nov. 25, 2023 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Alabama converted on 4th-and-goal from the 31-yard line with 32 seconds left for a 27-24 win, its fourth straight Iron Bowl victory. 'Gravedigger' was ranked No. 20 on ESPN's list, with Chris Low saying: "The legendary plays in the Iron Bowl are too many to count, but Jalen Milroe-to-Isaiah Bond on fourth-and-goal from the 31 ranks with any of them. Auburn, suffering through a losing season in Hugh Freeze's first year on the Plains, seemingly had the game won in what would have been a massive upset. With the Jordan-Hare Stadium crowd roaring, Alabama was pushed back to the 31 after initially having a first-and-goal from the 7. Only 43 seconds remained, and Auburn rushed just two defenders. Milroe stood in the pocket for five seconds before delivering a strike in the left corner of the end zone to a leaping Bond for the game-winning touchdown and a 27-24 win in what was Nick Saban's final Iron Bowl." Alabama anguish: three plays on ESPN list that cost Crimson Tide Not every big play in an Alabama game over the past 25 years has gone in the Crimson Tide's favor. Far from it, in fact. A total of three plays on ESPN's list came against Saban teams, including one that cost Alabama a national championship and another that denied them a chance to play for one. Topping ESPN's list was Auburn's 'Kick Six' from 2013. Chris Davis' 109-yard return for a touchdown was named the single best college football play of the past 25 years. Behind 'Kick Six' was Texas A&M star Johnny Manziel's first-quarter escape for a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Swope against Alabama in November 2012. The play, in which Manziel ran into a defender, bobbled the ball, and then rolled out of the pocket for the touchdown was ranked No. 12 on ESPN's list. The Aggies held off a furious Alabama rally to escape with a 29-24 win. Directly behind Manziel's banner day in Tuscaloosa was the play that denied Alabama a chance at a second straight title. Hunter Renfrow's game-winning touchdown with one second left on the clock at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship gave the Clemson Tigers a 35-31 win over Alabama. Renfrow's catch made ESPN's list of best plays at No. 13. Contact/Follow us @RollTideWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Alabama news, notes and opinions.

Former Badgers star garnering interest from the defending NBA champions

When it comes to the Wisconsin Badgers over the last decade, the most memorable team is easily the 2014-15 group that went 36-4 and made it to the National Championship Game, ultimately falling short to the Duke Blue Devils. That team had quite a few talented players, with four making it to the NBA: Sam Dekker, Frank Kaminsky, Duje Dukan, and Nigel Hayes-Davis. Kaminsky was a lottery pick to the Charlotte Hornets, while Dekker went No. 18 overall to the Houston Rockets. Both Dukan and Hayes-Davis ended up going undrafted, but secured NBA contracts. Unfortunately, all four players are out of the NBA now, as the Badgers don't have much of a presence in the league anymore. Johnny Davis was the latest to get drafted, going No. 10 overall to the Washington Wizards in the 2022 NBA Draft. But, he struggled in three seasons with the team, earning very limited minutes before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies this past season. Davis was later waived and signed with the New York Knicks G-League team in March. Currently, Micah Potter is the lone former Badger in the NBA. After going undrafted in 2021 and spending time in the G-League with the Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz, he had his best season yet for the latter squad, playing in 38 games in 2024. However, Potter could be joined soon by another former Badger as Nigel Hayes-Davis has been picking up some traction from his time at Fenerbahce. Davis had a stellar season, averaging a career-high 18.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, while leading his team to their second EuroLeague Championship last month. Hayes-Davis caught the eyes of Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzula, who, according to EuroHoops, made the trek out to see him play in the playoffs last month. At 30 years old, Hayes-Davis could be a low-cost option for the Celtics off the bench, as the forward has developed his shooting (41 percent from three this season), while stacking together several strong seasons overseas. If he's given the opportunity, Hayes-Davis could be the second Badger to join the NBA ranks this summer, as star wing John Tonje is also currently projected to be drafted later this month. Kirby Smart, Georgia Add Another Recruiting Win as Surge Continues

Kirby Smart, Georgia Add Another Recruiting Win as Surge Continues originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs continue to bolster the class of 2026 during an important recruiting period. Advertisement The Bulldogs had yet to surpass 10 commitments in the 2026 cycle at this time last month. After a number of high-profile official visits, though, things have certainly picked up. Marking the fourth commitment over the last two weeks, Georgia received a pledge from in-state offensive lineman Zachary Lewis on Monday. Lewis (6-foot-4, 270 pounds) plays for North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia, where he ranks as the No. 32 interior offensive lineman and the No. 53 player in the state (247Sports). South Carolina and North Carolina were also in contention for Lewis before he announced his decision. Advertisement 'I've grown up a Dawgs fan and now I get to be a Dawg!" Lewis said via On3's Hayes Fawcett. The Bulldogs began the month of June by landing highly touted cornerback Justice Fitzpatrick, the brother of former Alabama Crimson Tide standout and current Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Justice Fitzpatrick, out of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, ranks as a top-100 recruit and the No. 8 player at his position. Additionally, Georgia landed four-star defensive lineman Carter Luckie on May 31 after receiving a pledge from four-star wide receiver Ryan Mosley three days earlier. Advertisement Now holding 13 commitments to date, Smart and Co. sit fifth nationally and have an inside track to finish with another top-five class. Georgia hasn't finished outside the top five in nine consecutive years under Smart.
