Blue Jays vs. Orioles: Baltimore beats up Bassitt, while Springer takes pitch to the head

BALTIMORE—The Baltimore Orioles might be one of Major League Baseball's biggest disappointments this season, but they still have more than enough talent to play spoiler.
The
Blue Jays
were hit around early and often by their division rival. Starter Chris Bassitt allowed six runs over 2 1/3 innings while Brendon Little was just as bad with four earned in an 11-4 loss on Monday night at Camden Yards.
The poor pitching saddled the Jays with their second consecutive loss and their first series-opening defeat since June 20. It also allowed the Detroit Tigers to pull within one win of the American League lead after
the Jays beat them in three out of four games
over the weekend.
'My mechanics were off, I just could not throw any pitch where I wanted to throw it,' said Bassitt, who has allowed five homers over his last two starts. 'My cutter was basically nonexistent, curveball was OK, sinker was all right. I just couldn't locate.'
Jays right-hander has enjoyed seeing the development of players 'who weren't even a thought when
Here's everything you need to know about Monday's game:
Bassitt retired three of the four batters he faced in the first inning before his outing started to unravel in the second. Centre-fielder Cedric Mullins hit a two-run homer and Coby Mayo followed with a solo shot. An inning later, Adley Rutschman produced a two-run double before Ramon Laureano added an RBI single.
The Jays bounced back in the top of the third with two home runs of their own. Nathan Lukes hit a solo shot and
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
later followed with a two-run homer. The momentum was short lived as Bassitt served up three more runs in the bottom half of the frame to give the Orioles the lead for good.
Bassitt's short outing could not have come at a worse time. The Jays went through five relievers on the eve of a doubleheader, which means roster moves are likely coming Tuesday.
Guest: Toronto Blue Jays Manager John Schneider
Mason Fluharty, who tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings against Baltimore, is a candidate to be optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, as is Justin Bruihl. Tommy Nance, who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and is out of options, could be at risk of getting designated for assignment.
The Jays were at least prepared for the possibility. Triple-A pitchers Easton Lucas and Lazaro Estrada were already with the team in Baltimore on a taxi roster. Paxton Schultz, who has been out since late June with a finger injury, also rejoined the Jays this week in anticipation of being activated.
'We should be OK, we'll probably have to make some moves,' Jays manager John Schneider said following the loss. 'I'm not exactly sure what they are right now, but we'll figure it out in the morning.'
There was a scary moment in the top of the ninth when
George Springer
was hit on the side of the head by a 96-m.p.h. fastball. The ball initially struck Springer's upper shoulder before ricocheting off the ear flap of his helmet.
The veteran slugger crumpled to the ground and remained there for several minutes while he was checked out by the Jays' medical staff. The pitch clearly wasn't intentional as Orioles right-hander Kade Strowd appeared distraught on the mound following the incident.
Springer was still being examined following the game and the extent of his injury remained unknown.
'That's the worst part of baseball for any side, when a pitch gets thrown that high,' Schneider said. 'You don't think about baseball, you think about the human. It's scary, it happens, it sucks.
'He was alert the whole time … which is a good thing. But you hate seeing that happen to anyone at any time.'

Jen Pawol Breaks MLB Gender Barrier as 1st Female Umpire in Regular-Season Game

Major League Baseball Jen Pawol Breaks MLB Gender Barrier as 1st Female Umpire in Regular-Season Game Published Aug. 9, 2025 4:04 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Jen Pawol has made history as the first female umpire to work a regular-season game in the major leagues. Pawol's much-anticipated debut came as the first base umpire for Saturday's first game of a split doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins. She enjoyed a quiet first inning, watching as Braves right-hander Hurston Waldrep struck out the first two batters before Agustin Ramirez lined out to third baseman Nacho Alvarez. The Braves were also set down in order by Miami right-hander Ryan Gusto in the bottom of the first inning, with no calls from Pawol needed at first base. As the first base umpire, Pawol's responsibility was to check Waldrep's hands for foreign substances following the inning. During that brief encounter, she also appeared to receive a warm greeting from Braves catcher Sean Murphy on his way to the dugout. Pawol's first real test came in the third inning when she called Braves catcher Sean Murphy safe on a close play. Replays indicated Murphy may have been out, but Marlins manager Clayton McCullough did not challenge the call. Pawol also showed she will make animated calls. When Miami's Xavier Edwards grounded into a double play, Pawol pumped her fist and lifted her leg when she called Edwards out in the third inning. ADVERTISEMENT Pawol couldn't help but notice her debut was being watched closely. Fans responded with a warm ovation when the video board focused on the umpire between innings, forcing her to take a quick glance at her image. Pawol will work third base in Saturday night's second game of the doubleheader. She will be in the spotlight when she calls pitches behind the plate in Sunday's final game of the series. There was much anticipation for her historic debut on Saturday. A crowd of photographers gathered while waiting for the umpires to walk onto the field from their entry ramp near the Marlins dugout. McCullough and Braves bench coach Walt Weiss greeted Pawol when lineups were exchanged at home plate before the game. Pawol then jogged down the first baseline. She shook hands with Marlins first base coach Tyler Smarslok before taking her position on the right field line for the first pitch. Pawol said Thursday she was "overcome with emotion" when notified she would make her Major League Baseball debut this weekend. "It was super emotional to finally be living that phone call that I'd been hoping for and working towards for quite a while, and I just felt super full — I feel like a fully charged battery ready to go," Pawol said. Pawol, 48, has been working in the minor leagues since she was assigned to the Gulf Coast League in 2016. She was assigned the Triple-A championship game in 2023 and worked spring training games in 2024 and again this year. Jen Pawol is the first woman to umpire an MLB regular-season game. (Photo by Todd Kirkland/MLB Photos via Getty Images) Pawol, who is from New Jersey, had only a few days to prepare for Saturday's doubleheader. She said she was told of her long-awaited promotion during a Wednesday conference call with director of umpire development Rich Rieker and vice president of umpire operations Matt McKendry. Pawol was a three-time all-conference softball selection pick at Hofstra. She worked as an NCAA softball umpire from 2010-16. Pawol's rise to make MLB history came 28 years after the NBA gender barrier for game officials was broken and 10 years after the NFL hired its first full-time female official. The men's soccer World Cup first hired a female referee three years ago. The NHL has not had any women as on-ice officials. Reporting by The Associated Press.
