Don't use religion to identify illegal migrants: CPI(M)
The government should deal with those who have entered the country illegally according to the well-laid-out procedures, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said in a statement on Saturday (May 31, 2025) in New Delhi.
The party said that in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the BJP-led State governments and the Central government are targeting particularly Bengali-speaking Muslims and have, without any verification, pushed them to Bangladesh.
According to reports, it said, some genuine Indian citizens, too, were arrested and sent to Bangladesh. In some cases, even those whose appeals were still pending before the Assam High Court and the Supreme Court were forcibly pushed back. 'This should not be allowed,' CPI(M) said.
Calling the decision to 'push back' the 'suspected Bangladeshi citizens' as 'inhuman', the CPI(M) urged the government not to use religion to identify illegal migrants.
'Those who have entered the country through illegal means should be allowed access to a fair trial. Poor and undocumented migrants, who enter the country without any mala fide intentions, should be treated with dignity and dealt with according to the laid out procedures,' the Polit Bureau statement said.
The party also flagged the BJP-led Assam government's recently approved policy to give arms licences to 'indigenous people living in vulnerable and remote areas.'
'This is a dangerous decision with far-reaching ramifications. It is the duty of the government to maintain law and order and also prevent infiltration. Pushing them back and arming communally selected sections of the people are not the solutions,' the CPI (M) Polit Bureau said in its statement.

Delhi Confidential: United front
In Jakarta, Congress leader and outreach delegation member Salman Khurshid eloquently praised the ruling BJP's 'graciousness' in including members of Opposition parties in the initiative. His statement, however, didn't sit well with some of the Opposition MPs. Addressing the Indian community in Kuala Lumpur, CPI(M) MP John Brittas, who is a part of the same delegation, said Khurshid had forgotten to complete his statement and mention the Opposition's 'equally gracious response' to the gesture of the ruling party. Keen to play the non-partisan role, JD(U)'s Sanjay Kumar Jha, the delegation head, in his own stride declared that the mission's success was a result of exemplary mutual courtesy of both sides. Past Connection A grand event organised in Agra on Sunday to commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, the revered queen of Malwa kingdom, drew a large crowd from Pal, Baghel and Dhangar communities across multiple states. The event was orgainsed by Union Minister S P Singh Baghel, who, it is learnt, had been involved in its preparations for the last one month. Addressing the gathering, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar said he shared a personal connection with one of the communities present at the event. 'I remember in my childhood, the Rebari of our village played a big role in raising me,' he said, referring to the traditionally nomadic pastoralist community found primarily in Rajasthan. Late To The Party Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu's address at CII annual summit in Delhi recently went smooth but for one small mishap affecting his team. A senior IAS officer in the CM's team who arrived a bit late at the venue and sought entry through the VIP entrance was stopped by security personnel. The officer then refused to attend the programme and stayed out through the night. He joined Naidu after the event was over and left in a huff from the venue, sources said.

Talks with Pak only on POK: Abhishek in Kuala Lumpur
Kolkata: Despite differences with BJP, political interests can never outweigh national interests, national general secretary said in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Banerjee also insisted that talks with Pakistan can only be on POK. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Interacting with the Indian diaspora, Banerjee said, "I represent the Trinamool Congress, a political party. I may have differences with the party in office, but here I am representing India. I will not let my political interests come in the way of my national interests. When it comes to safeguarding the sovereignty and security of the nation, I will stand shoulder to shoulder with my country." "We were in talks with them (Pakistan) for decades, despite changes in various paradigms and govts. But one thing remains constant – the conflict with Pakistan," Banerjee said. "After what happened on April 22, where 26 people were killed at point-blank range solely based on their religion and gender – although I am an MP from the opposition camp – I want the ruling dispensation to engage in dialogue with Pakistan only to discuss reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Otherwise, these terror attacks will continue. This is my personal opinion," he added.

'Free Influencer Sharmishta Panoli, Don't Make Bengal Another North Korea': Kangana Ranaut
New Delhi: Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Sunday urged for the release of 22-year-old influencer Sharmishta Panoli, who was remanded to judicial custody by a court in Kolkata, a day after West Bengal Police arrested her from her Gurugram in Haryana. "Harassing someone in the name of law and order is not good. When someone has apologised and deleted the post, but putting her in prison, torturing her, ending her career and raising questions on her character is very wrong. This should not happen with any daughter," Kangana told ANI. Further, she said, "I urge the West Bengal government not to try to make the state into North Korea. Everyone has democratic rights. She has apologised for her indecent remarks. She had said everything in general and today's generation uses such language very normally- both in English and in Hindi. She should be released soon because she is a very young woman. She has her whole career and life ahead of her..." North Korea is ruled by a dictator Kim Jong Un. Kolkata Police arrested Panoli from Haryana's Gurugram on Friday night. She is a law student in Pune, Maharashtra. On Saturday, Panoli was produced before the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days. According to the Kolkata Police, several attempts were made to serve legal notices to Panoli and her family, but the attempts were unsuccessful because Panoli and her family absconded. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued by the court, based on which she was arrested from Gurugram on Friday. "The case relates to an Instagram video by a lady named Sharmishta Panoli that hurt the religious sentiments of a particular community. FIR was lodged in Garden Reach Police Station. Attempts to serve notice as per law couldn't be successful since the accused, with her family absconded. Subsequently, warrant of arrest was issued by the court of law, based on which she was arrested from Gurgaon yesterday," as per the Kolkata Police. However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15.
