Dumb and Dumber fans in stitches after noticing 'subtle joke' after 31 years
The hit 1994 comedy film Dumb and Dumber had a lasting impact on a generation, thanks in large part to the brilliant comedic performances of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. The film's massive success saw it open at number one at the box office, raking in almost $250 million worldwide on a modest budget of $17 million, resulting in significant profits.
However, a clever detail from the film has resurfaced on Reddit, leaving many in stitches, reminiscing about their childhoods. In the 'Movie Details' thread, a user highlighted a subtle joke that went largely unnoticed in the original cut. Although a deleted scene had initially revealed the joke, it remained a mystery to all but the most astute viewers in the final version.
The Redditor pointed out: "In 'Dumb and Dumber,' Lloyd Christmas was in love with Mary Swanson. Had they gotten married and she'd taken his last name, she'd be named Mary Christmas. It's never mentioned in the movie".
YardBarker further explained that this was not simply a coincidence, as evidenced by a deleted scene where Harry pieces together the connection, but ultimately, the filmmakers chose not to draw attention to the joke.
When the deleted scene was shared on the Reddit thread, it received some criticism from users who failed to find it amusing.
One commenter wrote: "Wow...I've seen a few deleted scenes and am glad they were deleted".
Another user echoed this sentiment, stating: "I've seen an uncut version on TV a long time ago, and was like what the f*** is this? Over the top crude humour. It totally killed the innocent stupidity of the characters".
One user joked, "So basically the sequel?" while another Reddit user poked fun, saying they act "like that doesn't exist".
A fellow user chimed in, "Wise man. I still refuse to see it as well. In some alternate reality, there was a sequel that was true to the original and hilarious. That's what I tell myself anyway,".
It appears they're not alone in their disappointment with the movie's comedic elements, as it holds a modest 67% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, others shared fond memories of the film, saying they were "obsessed" with it as a kid and had watched it so many times it was "burned into their brain," finding it "hilarious".
In the same Reddit thread, someone shared a curious anecdote about encountering someone with a similarly unusual name in real life.
They wrote: "My high school had the graduating class photos from the 1930s on up to current, around the school.
"If I remember correctly in the 70s, there was a girl named Mary Christmas Tree. Her brother had an equally interesting name, but I can't remember it now".
A witty remark followed, "All we need to find is the Tree family tree and we will find his name".

'Masterpiece' film part of 'greatest trilogy ever made' now streaming for free
The film is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer and, despite its imperfections, has been hailed as a 'masterpiece'. A beloved action film that viewers find themselves returning to time and again is now available to stream without charge this weekend. Back to the Future Part II, the sequel to the cinematic masterpiece Back to Future, can now be watched on BBC iPlayer. The movie, which enthusiasts claim has left "a huge mark on pop culture", continues to be praised as a "masterpiece" despite its flaws. Under the direction of Robert Zemeckis, the original Back to the Future debuted in 1985, with its sequels arriving in 1989 and 1990 respectively. The second instalment follows schoolboy Marty (Michael J Fox) and quirky scientist Doc (Christopher Lloyd) as they once again board the DeLorean for a journey through time, desperately trying to restore 1985 and their lives to normality. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the plot unfolds as follows: "In this zany sequel, time-traveling duo Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown return from saving Marty's future son from disaster, only to discover their own time transformed. "In this nightmarish version of Hill Valley, Marty's father has been murdered and Biff Tannen, Marty's nemesis, has profited. "After uncovering the secret to Biff's success - a sports almanac from the future - Marty and the Doc embark on a quest to repair the space-time continuum." Whilst the follow-up earned just a 64% fresh rating from critics, viewers awarded it a significantly higher 86% approval rating, reports the Express. This falls short of the original film's impressive 93% critics score and 95% audience approval. Fans have been effusive in their praise for the film, with one declaring: "Back to the Future (any of them) are certifiable masterpieces!" Another fan expressed their delight, writing: "One of my all-time favourite films, and it was so awesome seeing it in theatres again." A third admirer shared their thoughts, adding: "An awesome sequel, part of one of the greatest trilogies ever made." Critics have also shared their positive takes, with CBR's David Reddish noting: "Back to the Future Part II left the biggest mark on popular culture, sparking imagination and inspiring more adventure." He further observed: "Whatever its flaws or negativity it inspired from fans of the first movie, it remains the defining entry in the series." Hannah Rose from the same publication highlighted an often-overlooked aspect, writing: "One of the greatest and subtlest selling points of Back to the Future was its cuteness." She elaborated: "It might be odd, even trivial, to call a big-budget, epic sci-fi film cute, but this is an accurate description." David Jenkins from Little White Lies offered a succinct verdict, simplying putting: "Imperfect, but very lovable." While Ira Robbins of Entertainment Weekly described the experience as "another fantastic voyage in a thoroughly entertaining contraption". Richard Schickel of TIME Magazine also found much to admire, commenting: "Satirically acute, intricately structured and deftly paced, it is at heart stout, good and untainted by easy sentiment." However, not everyone was impressed, as highlighted by Variety's critique, which read: "Zemeckis' fascination with having characters interact at different ages of their lives hurts the film visually, and strains credibility past the breaking point, by forcing him to rely on some very cheesy makeup designs." Jonathan Rosenbaum from the Chicago Reader also had his reservations, stating: "By the end, you may feel that you've just sat through a feature-length commercial for both part one (which has to be seen to make this sequel comprehensible) and part three (a trailer for it literally ends part two)." Back to the Future Part II is available to stream on BBC iPlayer from Saturday, August 2.

'Gruesomely romantic horror movie' lands huge 90% Rotten Tomatoes score
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A new body horror movie has landed a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score after being branded 'a giddy grotesquerie' by impressed critics. Together, starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, landed in US cinemas this week, ahead of a UK premiere on August 15. Michael Shanks' scare-fest follows lovebirds Tim and Millie who move out to the country, where they have a bizarre, supernatural encounter. However, things take a creepy turn when their flesh begins fusing to each other, bringing them much closer than they ever anticipated. Although the flick hasn't been out long, it has gone down very well with film buffs, and currently claims a near-perfect score from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a 79% mark from fans. Heaping praise on the film, Movie Brief's Michael Nordine raved: 'One of the more gruesomely romantic horror movies ever made.' 'A giddy grotesquerie that has midnight-movie crowd-pleaser written all over it,' Nick Schager of the Daily Beast agreed. Owen Gleiberman, for Variety, penned: 'It's fun (in a rather bumptious way), it stars two very good actors playing a couple who have as many issues as couples do in real life, and it works as a totally unhinged yet far from mindless thriller built around a Big Idea.' Deadline Hollywood Daily's Glenn Garner hailed: 'Although Alison Brie and husband Dave Franco have shared the screen in the past, they truly sink into each other with some skin-crawling, albeit heartfelt and hilarious performances in writer-director Michael Shanks' feature debut Together.' As the Guardian's Benjamin Lee added: 'A convincingly gory argument for being single.' 'Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other,' the official synopsis reads. 'With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.' More Trending Filmmaker Michael previously opened up about the unsettling plot in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, admitting that it was inspired by his own relationship. 'I think when anyone is in a long-term relationship, there comes a point where you realize you have the same friends, eat the same food, breathe the same air – you start to wonder if you can truly tell where you end and your partner begins,' he told the outlet. 'I thought that was a really compelling place to start to examine in a relationship – what if you took that old cliche of sharing a life and took it to somewhere visceral, and horrifically literal?' Together is in US cinemas now, ahead of a UK release on August 15. Got a story? Stevie Nicks cancels tour dates just days before first gig due to injury
Stevie Nicks has been forced to postpone a series of upcoming tour dates after sustaining a shoulder fracture that requires time to heal. The 76-year-old music icon took to Instagram to share the news directly with fans, confirming that concerts scheduled for August and September will be rescheduled. 'Due to a recent injury resulting in a fractured shoulder that will require recovery time, Stevie Nicks' scheduled concerts in August and September will be rescheduled,' she wrote. 'Please note that October dates will be unaffected.' The Fleetwood Mac legend added that the tour is expected to resume on Wednesday, October 1 in Portland, Oregon. 'Stevie looks forward to seeing everyone soon and apologizes to the fans for this inconvenience,' the message concluded. Fans who have already purchased tickets are advised to retain them, as they will be valid for the rescheduled shows. Specific details about new dates and venues will be made available at the original point of purchase. Nicks had initially announced a nine-date tour across the US and Canada back in April, with performances slated for August and October. Due to overwhelming demand, additional shows were later added, including a launch night at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on August 8, as well as stops in Hollywood, Florida and Detroit in September. October was set to bring her to cities including Portland, Sacramento, Atlantic City, Charlotte, and Hartford. The news comes after Nicks postponed her Glasgow gig at short notice after having minor surgery for a leg injury. The Dreams singer was due to appear at the OVO Hydro earlier this month but organisers said she needs a 'few days of recovery' following a medical procedure. Even more recently, Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham officially confirmed the re-release of their 1973 duo album Buckingham Nicks. The famously acrimonious former bandmates caused fans to 'crash out' with a matching pair of social media posts in June, and then the appearance of a mysterious billboard a few days later. More Trending Many took to social media to speculate that the pair might finally be on speaking terms again after famously feuding for decades. Then, they informed the world that a re-release of Buckingham Nicks – which they recorded before joining Fleetwood Mac – will be available September 19. For now, fans will need to wait just a little longer to see the mystical frontwoman return to the stage. The silver lining? Nicks plans to be back on the road this autumn. Got a story?
