All Aboard Erie continues rail expansion efforts with new short film debut

A local organization has its eyes set on expanding rail travel in Erie and Thursday night they're taking steps in the right direction.
If you don't have a car, it can be tough sometimes to travel anywhere outside of Erie but All Aboard Erie is looking to make travel a little easier when it comes to trains.
Erie travelers don't have many options when it comes to traveling by train but All Aboard Erie is hoping to change that.
Thursday night the organization unveiled its new promotional video — voiced by our own Lou Baxter — to highlight the need for an expanded passenger rail service in our region.
All Aboard Erie debuts film highlighting state of Amtrak services in Erie
'We're very excited about the video, because not only does it showcase what additional passenger rail service would mean, it also talks about the Erie area. It's a promotional piece for why Erie is a great place to live,' said Brian Pitzer, chair of All Aboard Erie.
The video features Amtrak trains that already run through Erie on the Lake Shore Limited Route, as well as interviews with real Amtrak passengers from Erie.
One featured passenger said she enjoys traveling by Amtrak, but wishes there were more destinations leaving Erie, especially going south.
'You can actually go East and West on the train, but you can't go South. A lot of Erie residents have family in Pittsburgh, they go to the doctor in Pittsburgh, and it's a long drive, and Pittsburgh is famous for sometimes being difficult to navigate,' said Theresa Anderson, a City of Erie resident.

The train tracks here at Amtrak don't get a lot of love when it comes to passenger travel, just two trains, one coming at 2 A.M. and the other at 7 A.M., but All Aboard Erie is hoping to change that with a call to action issued Thursday.
'Everyone asks us, 'What's the next step in getting passenger rail service?' That would be an economic impact study, that will tell us what the impact will be, how it will affect the economy, and what that will mean to the Erie area,' Pitzer went on to say.
Pitzer said if anyone wants to support a potential economic impact survey, they should reach out to their state, county and local elected officials to let them know that this is what Erie needs.

Volkswagen Details 2026 Model Year Updates Ahead Of August Arrival

Volkswagen has announced all the updates for its 2026 lineup, with some 2026 models due to arrive in showrooms in August. Since most models were all-new or significantly refreshed over the last two years, the 2026 updates introduce a few refinements and additional equipment to the VW range. Let's take a closer look at what's new for 2026, starting with the brand's SUV range. The smallest and most affordable VW crossover underwent a comprehensive refresh for the 2025 model year, so for 2026, VW has elected only to add some more equipment. The Taos now gets standard rear-seat pretensioners, while a mid-model year change will see the introduction of upgraded 15-watt wireless charging. Range-topping SEL models now get an upgraded sound system with eight speakers. An all-new Tiguan was introduced for the 2025 model year, featuring a fresh look and a more tech-heavy interior than before. For 2026, the main change is the introduction of the SEL R-Line Turbo, which gets a more powerful 268-horsepower turbocharged engine, up from 201 hp in the other Tiguan models. VW has also updated its Travel Assist and assistant lane change systems; this applies to all trims. Very little has changed for VW's largest SUV models in the USA for 2026. Buyers going for the SE with Technology trim and above now get a factory-installed HomeLink mirror. The Peak Edition, SEL, and SEL Premium R-Line are the other trims benefitting from this change. VW has delayed some of its EV plans, but the ID.4 continues as the brand's sole electric SUV for the 2026 model year. S Plus trims will get a new HomeLink mirror, but VW says a mid-model-year update in 2026 is on the way, when new features will be added to the crossover. No information has been shared on the just yet, following its launch for the 2025 model year, but information on potential upgrades will be announced at a later stage. As with the Taos, rear-seat pretensioners will be standard on 2026 Jettas. The SE gets a standard sunroof, wireless charging is upgraded to 15 w, and SEL variants receive an upgraded eight-speaker sound system. After losing its manual gearbox and getting an updated infotainment system for 2025, there are no major changes for the 2026 Golf GTI. The Golf R underwent similar updates last year, but it's now available with a new exterior color called Graphite Grey Metallic. We expect the manufacturer to share pricing for 2026 models imminently, given that many of them will start arriving in August. The impact of tariffs could come into play here, as VW only promised to freeze pricing of new cars until the end of May. With that freeze now behind us, buyers may be seeing some unwelcome price hikes for 2026, and given how minimal the 2026 MY changes are, it may be a smart move to get a 2025 VW while you still can. Monticello approves $7.5M Oberheim Park contract

MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — A major multi-million dollar project is officially on track to start in Piatt County. The Monticello City Council passed a contract agreement with an Illinois-based construction company at Monday night's meeting. PREVIOUSLY: Plans moving forward for estimated $8 million Oberheim Park in Monticello It'll start building Phase One of the Oberheim Park complex as soon as next month. It would go in an open field by Route 47 and Green Apple Lane. The price tag came out to $7.5 million, and it officially gets the project to the start coming from the city's general fund and reserves. 'Getting a shovel in the dirt has been a long time coming,' said City Administrator Terry Summers. Now that ground-breaking has a start date, the 35-acres on the west side of Monticello will soon be home to Oberheim Park. '[It'll include] two baseball/softball fields, four youth soccer fields and a multipurpose field,' Summers added. Monday night's city council meeting approved a $7.5 million dollar agreement to break ground by July 1st of this year. The original agreement was for $7.1 million, but the board amended it on Monday to also pay for replacing the plan's asphalt with concrete. SEE ALSO: Monticello moves forward with Oberheim Park plans The board says it came down to getting more bang for their buck in the long term. 'Whereas concrete is going to be a little more upfront in cost, a little longer to install, harder to repair, but it's going to be more pivotal down the road,' said Alderman Ryan Woodham. And it could just be the start for the park. Summers said the city has the flexibility to add further phases and amenities into the future. 'I think the residents want to see some movement out there,' Summers said. 'And I think once you start to see the improvements and start utilizing those improvements and those quality of life amenities, I think there'll be more interest in the park and more interest in possible future phases.' The approval Monday night is expected to fast-track this project, with construction beginning next month and aiming to be mostly complete by next summer. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
