Proteas edged by Australia in thrilling T20 clash
Aiming for a historic victory on Saturday, a fighting Proteas team were held off by Australia in a nail-biting battle as the hosts secured a two-wicket victory in the third and final T20 International in Cairns.
With South Africa in search of their first T20 series win in Australia, their party was spoiled by the home side, who wrapped up a 2-1 series triumph.
Set a target of 173 to win, Australia got off to a cracking start, with captain Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head sharing 66 runs for the first wicket.
However, Head was removed by Aiden Markram for 19 runs in the eighth over to break the partnership, and Marsh was dismissed by teenager Kwena Maphaka midway through the innings after hitting 54 off 37.
Maxwell shines for Australia
And while the Proteas worked hard to pile on the pressure with the ball, middle-order batter Glenn Maxwell took the game away from the tourists by smashing 62 not out off 36 balls.
While all-rounder Corbin Bosch took two scalps in the penultimate over to keep the SA team in the hunt, they were ultimately edged out.
In a thrilling final over, delivered by Kagiso Rabada, Australia needed 10 runs with just two wickets in hand. Maxwell bashed 10 off five deliveries, guiding his side to 173/8 with one ball remaining.
Bosch, who was superb at the death, took 3/26, with fast bowlers Rabada (2/32) and Maphaka (2/36) grabbing two wickets each.
Proteas innings
Earlier, South Africa did not get off to the best start after being sent in to bat, finding themselves at 32/2 in the fifth over. But they soon changed gears.
Led by Dewald Brevis, who bashed 53 runs off 26 balls (including six sixes), the tourists took the fight to the hosts.
Brevis was removed by seam bowler Nathan Ellis in the 12th over, with Maxwell taking a good catch on the boundary, making amends after he had spilled a tough chance with Brevis on nine.
Once the big-hitting youngster was dismissed, Rassie van der Dussen carried the lower half of the order, contributing 38 not out off 26 deliveries as the Proteas reached 172/7.
Ellis was the best of Australia's bowlers, taking 3/31, and he was well backed by fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood (2/30) and spinner Adam Zampa (2/24).

Aiden is a couple of games away from unlocking that state of genius, says Proteas coach Shukri Conrad
Markram's form in the longer white-ball format does not inspire much confidence either. The right-hander has only two half-centuries in his last 16 ODI innings dating back to the 2023 World Cup, averaging just 31.81 during this period. In fact, his last T20I half-century was at the previous T20 World Cup back in October 2022 against India in Perth. He has walked to crease 31 times since without passing 50. It would be easy to brush Markram's poor return by the way side had it been a once-off. But the 30-year-old has been searching for form since before last year's T20 World Cup when he led the Proteas to a first-ever final. Markram endured a lean T20I series, which the Aussies won 2-1 off the penultimate ball of the decider in Cairns on Saturday evening. The skipper's contribution across the three matches was a paltry 31 runs at an average of 10.30. PROTEAS coach Shukri Conrad has backed Aiden Markram to rediscover his form in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. But Conrad feels that Markram is not far from his best form, citing the recent World Test Championship final where the vice-captain delivered arguably the most important innings in Proteas' history when he struck 136 to lead his team to a famous victory at Lord's. 'I mean, I know it's a different format. But the Test Final not so long ago, Aiden showed exactly what he's about,' Conrad said. 'And I'm sure it's, I mean, a couple of games away from unlocking that state of genius.' Furthermore, Conrad wanted the team to embrace the Proteas' style of play regardless of format. 'The intensity with which you play, I don't think that changes at all,' he said. 'I just think that sometimes we can be too humble. We don't show off enough to the world enough what we're capable of doing. 'A bit like (Dewald) Brevis. And this has got nothing to do with the way Australia plays. 'But they've got a blueprint as to how they want to play. There are times when it looks absolutely brilliant and it's box office stuff. And there are times where you can have them in trouble like we had them in the first couple of games. But they stay true to it. 'What does it mean for us? I think guys like, and especially in the batting front, it's easier on the batting front, guys like (Tristan) Stubbs and (Ryan Rickelton) Ricks and these guys, Aiden himself. There's so much that they can do. But I feel that they've maybe boxed themselves in a little bit too much. 'It's not always going to result in winning. But, yeah, I just want us to show off a bit more.' The Proteas will face Australia in the first ODI on Tuesday (6:30am start).

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus said his team were 'dog s**t' and captain Siya Kolisi issued an apology after the Springboks collapsed to a shock 38-22 defeat against the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday. Kolisi described the defeat as unacceptable and slammed his team for taking their foot off the pedal after they surrendered a 22-0 lead against a Wallaby side who defied the odds to topple the world champions. An embarrassed Erasmus said he could not butter up the loss and said his team were really bad on the day. SA started like a house on fire and scored 22 points in the opening 18 minutes, but they imploded inexplicably when they conceded 38 unanswered points. 'We let ourselves down today on things that we worked on like discipline and the breakdown' Kolisi said. 'The Boks want to thank everyone who supported us and we are sorry about the performance. 'But we will come again next week [in the second Test in Cape Town]. 'Australia definitely won the breakdown battle and we have to take that on the chin. 'It is unacceptable the way we performed after starting like that and then taking our foot off the pedal. 'When it came to the breakdown, we would fight and get into Australia's 22 and then they would steal the ball. 'It is something we knew they would do because they are good at it. 'It is hard to put in words, but credit to the Australian team because they played really well.' 'Though we started well, we didn't keep building. Our heads dropped and our shoulders slumped. 'That is disappointing because we know what's expected when you wear this jersey.' Erasmus said his team had been tactically outplayed. 'This is probably one of the most embarrassing press conferences I've done in a while,' he said. 'I can butter this up to sound cool and respectful, but we were just really dog s**t on the day. 'The Wallabies were good, but we made them better with our performance. 'To be 22-0 up, we did the same against Italy, when 28-3 up, and then we let teams back in. 'We gave them one or two soft tries. 'They beat us in the line-outs. 'For the first 25 minutes we were good at the breakdown, but after Kolisi got injured and Marco van Staden had to go for an HIA [head injury assessment they bullied us there. 'We as coaches got it terribly wrong. 'It wasn't just tactical — they also physically dominated us. 'The longer the game went on, the stronger they got. 'At altitude, that's supposed to be us. It shows what Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt is building there. 'Grant Williams had so many breaks, Manie had so many breaks, Edwill van der Merwe too. 'Their kick-to-ruck ratio was really good — we only kicked nine times in the second half. 'Maybe the players felt there was space, but that's coaching, that's on us. 'We must still build the innings. Twenty-two nil is not winning a game — it ended up losing by almost 20 points. 'The saddest thing is five log points for them and we didn't even fight back to take the bonus point away. So we're on zero, they're on five. Erasmus said the Bok management team would take a hard look at themselves after the defeat. 'From now until next Saturday we'll take a lot of flak, but when we take the credit when we're doing well, then we must take the flak when we're doing badly.
