Thai govt acts in kirpan row

Kolkata: The department of religious affairs of Thailand has issued a circular, stating that all establishments, such as hotels, schools, colleges and offices, will admit Sikhs and treat with respect their '5K symbols' of kesh (unshorn hair), kanga (comb), kara (steel bracelet), kirpan (dagger) and kachera (undershorts).
Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, a member of the state minorities commission, was on April 12 denied check-in by a hotel in Bangkok as he was carrying a kirpan, one of the '5K symbols' of
Sikhism
. The staff at Shangri-La Bangkok had declined to accommodate Ahluwalia unless he deposited his kirpan with the security every time he entered and exited the hotel.
Sri Guru Singh Sabha of Thailand took up the matter after Ahluwalia apprised them of the harassment at the hotel.
According to an official at Thailand consulate, the circular was issued on May 22 in response to Sri Guru Singh Sabha of Thailand, which, in turn, took up the matter with the religious affairs department. The circular states: "The religious affairs department would like to inform that it has disseminated knowledge about the five religious symbols of Sikhism, which are religious identities that should be correctly and appropriately adorned, to various agencies relating to tourism and hotel businesses, such as the Royal Thai Police, the Immigration Bureau, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Thai Hotels Association, and the Professional Tour Guide Association of Thailand, so that they understand and respect peaceful coexistence in a multicultural society and use it as a guideline for treating people of different religions.

Ahluwalia said, "The Thailand govt has taken action to protect the dignity of Sikhs within one month. Kirpan is not a weapon but a religious symbol for us. Posters have been put up for sensitising Thai people about our five religious symbols. The circular brings cheers to the Sikh community all over the world."

Gautam Adani visits Chinese equipment makers as US legal woes linger

Indian billionaire Gautam Adani traveled to China last week to meet industrial equipment manufacturers, marking what appears to be his first overseas trip since the US unveiled criminal and civil cases against him in November. The visit, including to a solar module maker, underscores Adani's continued efforts to maintain momentum in renewables even as he faces heightened scrutiny abroad. Sagar Adani , who oversees the green arm of the conglomerate's sprawling empire, accompanied his uncle on the trip, according to a social media post by one of the companies he visited. The trip to China could signal a renewed push for international engagement as Gautam Adani tries to shake off controversies, from US legal troubles to investor concerns about corporate governance practices, following a bruising short-seller report in early 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Prices of Solar Panels Might Actually Surprise You Solar Panels | Search Ads Get Info Asia's second-richest person, along with his nephew Sagar, face criminal and civil charges in the US over their alleged involvement in a $250 million bribery scheme to pay regional officials in India to lock in solar-power contracts. — BROAD_ltd (@BROAD_ltd) Live Events The Adani Group has denied the claims, though both Gautam and Sagar have curtailed their international travel since the indictment was announced. The Indian conglomerate is building one of the largest renewable energy parks — five times the size of Paris — near India's western coast with solar panels and wind turbines. The billionaire visited a Jinko Solar Co. manufacturing plant, inspecting the facility's automated production lines, the Shanghai-based company said in a statement on June 4. Its energy storage solutions are well-suited to India's high-temperature conditions and will be integrated into Adani's projects to bolster grid stability and renewable energy absorption, it said. Adani also visited Broad Group's facilities, the Chinese firm said in a post on X. The company has a range of subsidiaries that includes a wind turbine manufacturer. A spokesperson for Adani didn't immediately comment. The group's renewable energy ramp up plans are crucial for two of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's policy pledges — making the country carbon neutral by 2070 and self-reliant, especially in manufacturing. India is one of the biggest markets for China's solar modules and Adani's visit could also signal room for better business ties between the two countries. While relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors remain fraught, there have recently been signs of a thawing. In January, they agreed to resume direct flights, facilitate visas and restart sharing data of trans-border rivers. A few months later, the nations announced the resumption of an annual pilgrimage to the Tibet Autonomous Region, organized by India's foreign ministry, that had been suspended for years after border clashes erupted.

Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Sonam Raghuvanshi blames Raj Kushwaha, Raj blames Sonam — cops grapple with contradictory versions

The investigation into Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi's honeymoon murder has intensified, with prime suspect Sonam Raghuvanshi and co-accused Raj Kushwaha now blaming each other. NEW DELHI: The honeymoon murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi has entered a murky phase, with both the prime accused Sonam Raghuvanshi and co-accused Raj Kushwaha now turning on each other during questioning, leaving investigators to sift through a web of contradictions. The SIT probing the chilling crime, codenamed Operation Honeymoon, has gathered crucial evidence from Indore and Ghazipur, as it attempts to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to Raja's murder in Meghalaya's Sohra region. The 24-year-old Sonam, who is accused of plotting her husband's killing barely days into their marriage, was flown into Guwahati late Tuesday. Raja's body was found in a gorge 10 days after he was last seen alive, with police suspecting the involvement of contract killers allegedly hired by his wife. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the gruesome murder of newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi has recovered crucial evidence from Indore and Ghazipur, as it works to piece together the chilling sequence of events that led to his killing in Meghalaya's Sohra region. The 24-year-old wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of orchestrating her husband's murder just days after their May 11 wedding, was flown to Guwahati late Tuesday and brought to Shillong on Wednesday for questioning. Police suspect the murder was a contract killing, allegedly carried out by three men hired by Sonam — Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (21). The three were arrested in overnight raids soon after the body was found. Sonam, who had initially disappeared, later surrendered at a police station in Ghazipur, the hometown of Raj Kushwaha — her alleged boyfriend. Codenamed 'Operation Honeymoon', the investigation has spanned three states — Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. On Tuesday, the SIT seized fresh evidence from the homes and hideouts of the accused in Indore and Ghazipur. Police have secured a six-day remand for the three male accused and are seeking a three-day custodial remand for Sonam. According to investigators, Sonam parted ways with Raja at Mawkdok — where their rented scooter was later recovered — and travelled alone to Guwahati by taxi. She then took a series of trains to reach Ghazipur. The three other accused too fled via Guwahati and eventually reached Indore by train. Police are now reconstructing the full timeline of the crime — from the arrival of the alleged killers in Sohra to the execution of the murder — and are probing whether others were involved in planning the crime.

Delhi cop held for taking Rs 10,000 bribe; caught red-handed at Govindpuri Police Station, tea stall owner also detained

File photo used for representational purpose. NEW DELHI: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Delhi Police , stationed at the Govindpuri Police Station in the South East district , was arrested on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. The officer, whose identity has not yet been disclosed officially, allegedly accepted the bribe in return for providing undue relief to a man and his family members in connection with a criminal case registered against them. According to officials from the Delhi Police Vigilance Unit, the arrest took place at the Govindpuri police station itself. As per the initial investigation, the incident stemmed from a scuffle that erupted between the families of two brothers. This altercation led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) in which certain members of one family were named as accused. Following the registration of the FIR, the ASI allegedly demanded a bribe amounting to Rs 50,000 from the complainant in exchange for providing some form of relief, possibly in the form of leniency or influence over the investigation process. After some negotiation, the bribe amount was reportedly settled at Rs 10,000. Out of this agreed sum, Rs 5,000 was already paid to the police officer earlier. Interestingly, the money was not handed over directly to the ASI. According to a senior officer familiar with the case, a woman who runs a tea stall in the vicinity was acting as an intermediary and was entrusted with the task of collecting the bribe money on behalf of the policeman. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo This woman also came under the scanner during the vigilance operation. The complainant, troubled by the illegal demand for money and possibly fearing further harassment, decided to approach the Delhi Police Vigilance Unit and reported the matter. Based on his detailed complaint and preliminary inquiry, vigilance officers formulated a plan to catch the corrupt officer red-handed while accepting the remaining Rs 5,000. A trap was laid for the second instalment of the bribe. The complainant was instructed to proceed as planned while being closely monitored by the vigilance team. As soon as the bribe money was handed over vigilance officers swiftly entered the station and apprehended the ASI. Alongside him, the woman who had been acting as a conduit for the bribe collection was also detained. An official investigation is now underway to gather all evidence and determine whether other individuals may have been complicit in the crime.
