Jade sparks chaos at Big Weekend as her fans leave festival and snub huge act
Former Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall put on an incredible performance at Radio 1's Big Weekender in Liverpool - so much so that her fans decided to leave after her slot
Jade Thirlwall has caused chaos at Radio 1's Big Weekend after her incredible set where she played her chart-topping hits including Angel Of My Dreams and IT Girl. The former Little Mix star drew in thousands of fans in Liverpool's Sefton Park, and after her set, many decided to leave the park as they snubbed Mumford And Sons who were playing on the Main Stage.
A source told The Mirror: "Everybody left after Jade. Mumford And Sons may have been on the Main Stage but Jade proved she's a dark horse of the industry. She headlined the New Music Stage but after leaving her set, thousands of people decided to leave.
The festival-goer told us: "There's really no topping Jade Thirlwall, nobody could compare to her after her set, she performed Little Mix hits and her own solo bangers including FUFN (clean version), IT Girl and the club anthem Angel of my Dreams, it was a no brainer that she was the real closer of the festival.''
Another person in the crowd said that it was a shame that Jade, 32, wasn't one of the artists chosen to play on the Main Stage. "Jade was one quarter of the biggest British girlband after Girls aloud and Spice Girls, and to have her on the New Music Stage seemed like a silly idea.
"She attracted one of the biggest crowded with hundreds leaving HAIM to see her live. She certainly proved she can hold her own. Everybody was heading up to Mumford and sons afterwards. It was clear she drew a huge crowd in and she should have been on the main stage."
It comes after Jade announced the release of her debut solo album, which marks one of the biggest milestones in her personal career since her former band Little Mix went on hiatus.
Earlier this month, the singer took to Instagram to share the news with fans, posting: "THAT'S SHOWBIZ BABY! My debut album out 12th September." The announcement was accompanied by a striking image of what appears to be her album artwork, which features Jade in four different outfits and poses.
This career move comes after Jade has already spent a decade in the spotlight after rising to fame as part of Little Mix, the four-member girl group that was formed on The X Factor in 2011.
The band went on to become one of the UK's most successful girl groups, clinching number one singles, Brit Awards, and touring internationally. After the band went on hiatus in May 2022, Jade kicked off her career as a solo artist.
She has been extremely successful on her own and already has a Brit Award and a place at Glastonbury under her belt. The news of her first solo album was met with excitement from fans. One wrote: "Bring it on I can't wait!" Meanwhile, another gushed: "EVERYBODY MOVE SHE'S SAVING THE MUSIC INDUSTRY."
The artist has teased that her debut record will feature A-list artists such as RAYE, Lostboy, and Pablo Bowman. Jade will also kick off her first UK and Ireland tour in October.
She told fans: "This album has been years in the making, so I'm beyond excited that I can finally let everyone know when it's coming out. I'm very proud of 'THAT'S SHOWBIZ BABY!' as a body of work and can't wait to share it with the world. To be able to perform the album live later this year is also a dream come true. See you all on tour!"
Although she has received support from music aficionados who are delighted by her new music, Jade has recently spoken about the more challenging aspects of being in the public eye in an interview for ITV's The Assembly. The programme features questions from autistic, neurodivergent, and learning-disabled interviewers, one of whom quizzed Jade about what specific pressures she faces as a woman in the music industry.
The singer responded: "I'm going to be very honest about this. The thing that annoys me the most, and I get asked the most, is if I'm going to have children, do I want to be pregnant next? Am I pregnant? But I find it really weird people ask that because they don't know what my circumstances are."
She continued: "You don't know if someone can't have children, or just doesn't want to, or isn't ready yet. I think it's a really invasive question and I really resent being asked it."
Jade also opened up about the public scrutiny she has recently faced over her appearance, saying, "I've maybe put on a bit of weight since I've become a solo artist and because of that people speculate a lot like, 'Is she pregnant?' and I'm like, guys, I've just had a bit of garlic bread. I'm bloated. Do you know what I mean?"
While reflecting on her early years in the music industry, Jade admitted that she used to feel like she had "sold her soul," adding: "But as the years have gone by I've learned more and more about the industry. I've been collecting – a bit like Thanos with the stones – I've been collecting parts of my soul back."

You too can dress like Paul Mescal — the best short shorts for summer
The question in fashion circles is not so much whether it will be a short summer, but will it be a shorts summer? This time last year it was most definitely the latter, largely thanks to Paul Mescal, who before he graced our screens in a leather skirt in Gladiator II, set tongues wagging after showing up at a Gucci men's fashion show in the briefest of shorts — cotton with stripes — teamed with socks, loafers and told GQ at the time: 'I'm a big advocate for men wearing shorter shorts.' And indeed the Irish actor has made the micro short something of a wardrobe signature for a few years now. But though he told a five-year-old caller on a Radio 1 phone-in, in response to their question of why his shorts are so short, 'They're sports shorts … they're just very practical for exercise, and they're great for running in,' let's face it — the Gucci skimpies were not about being workout ready. This was a fashion statement and heralded a shift of focus from that traditional male area of musculature, the six-pack. • This article contains affiliate links that can earn us revenue That being said, Mescal was not wrong in his designating this sort of micro short the friend of track and field. Look at the glamorous tennis stars of old — Borg and McEnro era — and you'll see the style in its heyday. It's just when you bring it into an everyday context, it becomes something quite different. The funny thing is that in the rise of the men's short short — literally — we have the male equivalent of that hoary old fashion barometer, the female hemline. Forever a source of cultural comment, the movement of skirt and dress lengths is seen as an indication not only of aesthetic pendulum swings, but also of changing attitudes to permissiveness. Early 20th-century styles with a hangover from Victorian decorum saw modest, long hemlines, while the roaring, decadent 1920s championed shorter flapper models. Later, the 1940s dipped to knee length or below, and then there was a longer drop to mid-calf, as advocated by Dior's New Look, in the 1950s mid-length trend. This would be torpedoed by the anything-goes miniskirted 1960s. So what does today's Mescal micro short signify? Are we seeing a type of sexual revolution where men are saying proudly, to paraphrase ZZ Top, 'We got legs, we know how to use them'? Possibly. It's certainly a trend that's still here for spring/summer 2025 — you can expect it to be on display not just in a park or on a beach near you soon, but also on the high street, at the coffee shop and — whisper it — in the flexible work sphere. And designers are ready to fulfil demand: scantily cut shorts are on offer in the collections of Gucci (striped cotton shorts with embroidery), Tom Ford (shiny rayon satin shorts with piping), Celine Homme (grey School Boy shorts in wool), Orlebar Brown (the tailored fit Norwich style in linen or seersucker), Polo Ralph Lauren (the 15cm Polo Prepster linen short in multiple colours) and so it goes on. One advocate of short shorts is the actor Luke Evans, whose own fashion collection of casual wear, all T-shirts and sweatshirts and joggers, features some very high-cut shorts. Given that the name of his brand, BDXY, comes from the words 'Bold' and 'Sexy' we should not be surprised. The Cameo shorts (Evans has named all his items after roles on a film set) with their sculpted leg design, contrast stripes and colours (burgundy, army green, white and black) unashamedly nod to the sportswear of the Eighties. And the Welsh movie star reveals that short shorts have a classy provenance. 'The inspiration came directly from JFK Jr, who was the epitome of style and youthful sex appeal,' Evans says. 'He wore the short short perfectly and we wanted to bring the style back and honour what was such a masculine, bold and attractive fashion choice for a man at the beach, by the pool, on the tennis court, on the boat or at the gym.' Channelling the American socialite son of John and Jackie Kennedy, Evans regularly wears the Cameo style himself. 'For me it's about comfort and freedom. And it allows for a much better tan on the whole leg,' he says. 'Also it forces me to never miss leg day at the gym!' It's worth pointing out here that Luke Evans, like Paul Mescal, is a Hollywood actor. Though now in his forties, he has the buff body of a man half his age. For those of us less blessed, it might be worth pointing out that BDXY is adding a new style: 'We are launching a mid-length short soon that isn't a short short, so we can appeal to the less brave,' he reveals. 'But our short shorts have been extremely popular.' So is it brave or foolish for a man of a certain age — movie stars in peak condition excepted — to try this style? To find out I conducted some targeted research. Very targeted. I asked Rowan, my son's 24-year-old girlfriend, what she thought of the trend. 'I love it,' she said enthusiastically. Why? 'Because it makes men get their legs out.' And is there an age at which we should consider something less high-rise, I inquired. 'Oh yes,' she replied. 'About 29.' Guess how old Mr Mescal is.

Jessie J's celebrity friends leave touching messages of hope amid cancer journey
Jessie J, famed for Price Tag, Domino and other tunes, has been diagnosed with early breast cancer and plans to have surgery following her performance at this month's Summertime Ball Jessie J has received messages of support from celebrity friends - including Rochelle Humes - after announcing she has cancer. The singer, 37, said she will have surgery after her performance at the Summertime Ball and remained optimistic she will return with more hits. However, she admitted she "needs a hug" through the difficult time, having been diagnosed with the breast cancer at an early stage. Friends quickly shared messages of support, telling the songwriter how much they love her. Humes, who presents The Hit List with husband Marvin, said: "We love you so much." Former Little Mix singer Leigh-Anne Pinnock added: "Sending you so much love" amid the flurry of public messages. And the rapper Wretch 32, whose real name is Jermaine Scott, said: "Continued strength and guidance, you're loved and you're cared for, you fight my gangster." Jessie J, born and raised in Chadwell Heath, east London, said in an Instagram video yesterday she has spent much of her recent time "in and out of tests". She stressed, though, she is "holding on to the word 'early'" and is looking at surgery in the coming weeks. But the musician, whose real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish, says she will still perform at the Capital's Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium on Sunday June 15. She is on the line-up alongside the likes of Mariah Carey, Benson Boone and Tate Mcrae. Speaking in the Instagram clip, Jessie J said: "I just wanted to be open and share it... One, because, selfishly, I do not talk about it enough. I'm not processing it because I'm working so hard. "I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories. I'm an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse - that's the bit that kills me. "The timing of it has been mad but also beautiful and given me this incredible perspective in this time. But honestly I need to process it and talk about it and, I need a hug. You have loved me through all my good and hard times. And I don't want this to be any different." The singer, who won the Critic's Choice award at the Brits in 2011, welcomed her son, Sky Safir Cornish Colman, in 2023, having miscarried in November 2021. She has battled with ill health throughout her life, having been diagnosed with a heart condition aged eight, suffering a minor stroke aged 18 and having briefly gone deaf in 2020. Claire Taylor, chief nursing officer at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a life-changing moment for anybody and our thoughts are with Jessie and her family. "Her openness in sharing her story will not only bring comfort to others who are facing a similar situation, it will also raise vital awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early diagnosis. We know that diagnosing cancer early can mean treatment is more likely to be effective and potentially less complex."
