In his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Modi said the government is taking major initiatives in the nuclear sector to meet the country's future energy requirements. 'Work is progressing rapidly on 10 new nuclear reactors and, by 2047, we have pledged to increase our nuclear energy capacity tenfold... We are bringing major reforms in the nuclear energy sector,' he said.
The prime minister said the country remains dependent on other nations for petrol, diesel and gas, and spends billions of rupees on imports. He stressed the need to make India self-reliant in the energy sector.
Highlighting the growth in renewables, Modi said solar energy capacity has risen 30 times in the past 11 years. He also mentioned efforts to build new dams for hydropower expansion and investments worth thousands of crores in the Hydrogen Mission.
Modi said the nuclear energy sector has been opened to private participation. According to government sources, India plans to end the state monopoly over uranium mining, imports and processing, while retaining control over reprocessing of spent uranium and management of plutonium waste.
The government aims to attract investment and allow foreign players to take minority stakes in nuclear power plants. If the 2047 target is met, nuclear power is expected to contribute about 5 per cent of the country's total electricity supply, according to official estimates.

It also ruled that Aadhaar cards must be accepted for voter inclusion — a decision hailed by Sandeep Gujjar as "a victory of the people over a compromised Commission. Kolkata set to pick up speed with 14km of new metro tracks this Friday, highest single-day addition till now
1 2 Kolkata: In the largest such addition, the city is all set to get 14 km of new metro lines, changing the way how Kolkatans commute. This Friday, PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off three metro sections — Green Line or East-West Metro's last 2.6-km leg, the 7-km Noapara-Airport stretch or Yellow Line's phase I, and the 4.4-km Ruby-Metropolitan leg or Orange Line's phase II. Among the three segments, the shortest is the most significant. Inauguration of the 2.6-km Esplanade-Sealdah section, which had hit major roadblocks as it passed through the subsidence-prone Bowbazar stretch, will mean completion of the 16.6-km East-West Metro; it is expected to catapult daily ridership on the line from 1 lakh to 7 lakhs. East-West Metro now runs in two disjointed sections: the 9.2-km Sector V-Sealdah stretch and the 4.8-km Esplanade-Howrah Maidan stretch. A complete Green Line would mean direct connectivity between Salt Lake's Sector V and Howrah Maidan with stops at transit hubs Sealdah station, Esplanade and Howrah station. MSEDCL's Nagpur circle office tops division in 100-day campaign
Nagpur: The Nagpur Circle Office of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) secured the first rank in the divisional-level category for the department in the 100-day administrative reform campaign. Launched to improve efficiency in govt functioning, the campaign witnessed participation by 12,500 govt offices across the state. MSEDCL Nagpur Regional Director's Office bagged the third position in the state. The results were announced during the Independence Day programme held at the Divisional Commissioner's Office.
