Hundreds celebrate World Karate Day in Mysuru

The Hindu22-06-2025
World Karate Day was celebrated in Karnataka's Mysuru on Sunday, which saw the participation of hundreds of practitioners, mainly children, who gave a demonstration of the martial art form.
The event was organised by the Mysuru Karate Association at the Mysore University Sports Pavilion, and inaugurated by MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and Chamundeshwari MLA G.T. Deve Gowda.
Mr. Deve Gowda urged the students to learn self-defence techniques like karate along with their academic activities, and said that it would help them deal with hooligans and anti-social elements whose menace was on the rise in society.
Alongside arts, culture, literature, and academics, physical activities and sports should also thrive and be a part of formal education, he added.
The Chamundeshwari MLA said the activities of hooligans at times render people helpless, and on such occasions, self-defence techniques help in protection. Practice of such martial art forms also helps in maintaining one's health, and promotes discipline and strength, he added.
Mr. Deve Gowda also called for conducting karate competitions during Dasara, in order to encourage and popularise the martial art form.
He also commended MP Yaduveer Wadiyar's work and said that the latter has disproved his detractors.
'Many made sarcastic comments when he contested elections, and questioned whether a royal would come out of the palace and work with the public. But he is constantly travelling across his constituency in Mysuru and Kodagu districts. Besides, he also meets both the State and Central ministers for the development of the constituency, and his dedication has earned him the goodwill of the people.' Mr. Deve Gowda said.
C. Venkatesh, director, Physical Education, University of Mysore, S. Sunil Kumar, president, Mysuru Karate Association, and others were present.

Caste census faces early hurdles in Karnataka as teachers oppose deployment

Bengaluru: The state govt's ambitious caste census, officially known as the socio-educational survey, is facing early hurdles, with teacher associations pushing back against plans to rope them in for the door-to-door enumeration. The massive exercise, scheduled to begin on Sept 22, is expected to be completed within 15 days, but staffing challenges threaten to derail the tight timeline. The govt plans to deploy around 1.6 lakh enumerators for the survey, with teachers forming the core of this workforce, alongside ASHA activists and anganwadi workers. However, teacher unions are opposing the move, citing overburdening due to repeated non-academic duties. "Under the provision of the Right to Education Act, the service of teachers is not supposed to be used for anything other than school academic activities and the Supreme Court's order is very clear about it. We are disheartened about the govt's proposal to use them again for the caste census after the just-ended internal reservation survey. We will write to the chief minister and chief secretary requesting them not to deploy teachers to the caste census," said Siddabasappa B, president of Karnataka State High School Teachers Association. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! In addition, the Karnataka State Election Commission has asked the govt to assign teachers for electoral roll revision. With around 40% teaching posts lying vacant across govt schools, teacher bodies argue that learning outcomes are being compromised. Siddabasappa added, "There are about 45,000 vacancies of teachers cumulatively from primary to high schools out of the sanctioned strength of 1.1 lakh posts." He said the govt must prioritise filling these vacancies instead of burdening the existing staff with non-teaching responsibilities. The teachers' associations had earlier submitted a memorandum to chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh on July 8 and are now planning another round of appeals against the caste census duty. Despite the concerns, govt officials maintain that they are attempting to minimise academic disruption. The enumeration has been strategically planned during the Dasara holidays to avoid overlap with school sessions. Enumerators are to be given Rs 6,000 for surveying 100 households, which may be revised to Rs 8,000. Teachers will also receive earned leave, which can either be encashed or used later. "We are well aware of the Supreme Court's judgement concerning the utilisation of the service of teachers for non-teaching activities. We are planning the survey in such a way that it would affect the academic calendar of schools," said Madhusudan R Naik, chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes. ——- Quote We have prepared the draft notification and will soon forward a proposal to deploy teachers with the terms of reference for the survey and it will be issued soon. It is always better to use teachers for survey and and the govt will take a final call -Tulasi Maddineni | Principal Secretary, backward classes welfare department

GST notices in Karnataka was bid to recover revenue lost to guarantee schemes: Mysuru MP

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, MP from Mysuru, said that the GST notices served to small traders was a desperate attempt by the government of Karnataka to recover revenue lost due to 'unscientific guarantee schemes that are a drain on the exchequer'. Though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered withdrawal of the notices, the controversy is yet to die down. Mr. Yaduveer took to social media to urge the government of Karnataka to prioritise public awareness over abrupt enforcement. The controversial tax notices, which targeted micro enterprises, including bakeries and condiment vendors, demanded lakhs of rupees in dues — some dating back four to five years — sparking widespread panic among small traders. Though the Congress leaders in Mysuru blamed the Centre for the GST notices, Mr. Yaduveer insisted that they were not issued by the Central Government, but by the Commercial Tax Department of the government of Karnataka. 'This move is deeply concerning,' he said, adding that small businesses have been targeted without any prior guidance or awareness campaign. The enforcement drive was not just ill-timed, but also poorly thought out, and motivated by the need to make up for fiscal mismanagement, he alleged. The MP further criticised the manner in which the notices were served, highlighting the setback to digital payment adoption. 'Such actions are discouraging UPI usage in local businesses, undermining the nation's digital payment ecosystem and creating fear among merchants,' he said in his social media post. The MP also criticised the attempts being made by the Congress to blame the Centre. 'Efforts to portray this as a Central Government decision are misleading. Current GST rules apply only to businesses with turnover above ₹40 lakh. This sudden enforcement seems like a veiled attempt to gradually push even the smallest traders into the GST ambit,' said Mr. Yaduveer. Calling for a more responsible approach from the State Government, he said the focus should be on creating awareness, transparency and supporting digital transactions rather than weakening them.
