‘Exemplary Leadership': HD Deve Gowda praises PM Modi after Operation Sindoor

Lauding India's 'mature and restrained' military response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack under 'Operation Sindoor', JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda on Thursday said that while the challenges may not end here, there is immense relief in knowing that the nation stands united. (Also Read: Indo-Pak tension: Karnataka government has taken precautionary measures, says CM) In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Prime Minister and Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka, HD Deve Gowda, lauded Modi's 'exemplary leadership' and 'determined steps' in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attack. 'I pray that God be with you, and with our great nation as we wage this war of dharma against the adharma of terrorism,' Gowda wrote, praising the Prime Minister's handling of the crisis. He emphasised India's peaceful global image, stating, 'India is a peace-loving nation and has always spread positive light in the world, but if someone sees it as our weakness, then, they now know what we are capable of.' Gowda noted that he was reaching out with 'a deep sense of appreciation' following the country's 'mature and restrained' military response to the May 7 terrorist strike in Pahalgam. 'The challenges we face may not certainly end here, but there is immense relief in the fact that we remain united as a nation. We suffer together but we also rise together as one nation and one people,' he said, highlighting national unity in difficult times. The former PM recalled Modi's swift return from an international trip to oversee the response to the April 22 terror attack. '...you cut short your visit to Saudi Arabia and rushed back to monitor the developing situation in India (following the April 22 terror attack), conduct strategy meetings, mobilise international support and inspire our armed forces. You also later cancelled your tour of Europe to be available at home for all emergencies,' Gowda pointed out. He acknowledged the immense pressure the Prime Minister must have faced in recent weeks. 'The past couple of weeks must have been very demanding and stressful,' he wrote. 'But I am happy that God has given you the strength and resolve to see India through these trying times. Your leadership has been exemplary, and history will undoubtedly record it in glowing terms.' Reflecting on the burden of leadership, he added, 'I know it is lonely at the top there, and I also know that without a spiritual sense, deep reflection, and continuous prayer it is not easy to find balance and equanimity of judgment. You have demonstrated that you have it all in good measure in the last few days. It was evident on a number of occasions in the past too.' Deve Gowda slams Siddaramaiah for inaction on caste census

Bengaluru, May 6 (UNI) Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) patriarch HD Deve Gowda on Tuesday came down heavily on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, accusing him of "political hypocrisy" and inaction over the caste census during his earlier term. Taking strong exception to the Congress government's renewed push for a caste census, Gowda said Siddaramaiah had 16 budgets to act but "did nothing" despite claiming to be a champion of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. "The Chief Minister calls himself a hero of SCs and STs. Let him first explain what action he took when he had the opportunity. His own ministers failed to defend him," the JD(S) supremo told reporters. He criticised the Congress leader for "sitting on" the Kantharaju Commission and Nagmohandas Committee reports. "Now Siddaramaiah wants to teach the Prime Minister and the Home Minister about social justice? First, let him declare how many backward class members are in his own office," he added. Affirming JD(S)'s support to the Union government's caste-based enumeration, the former Prime Minister said, "We trust the Prime Minister and the Home Ministry. No community will face injustice. The Centre is handling this with due diligence and our party stands by its decision." Deve Gowda also said that JD(S) leaders, including HD Kumaraswamy and Nikhil Kumaraswamy, were united in supporting the central initiative. "States like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana may adopt their own paths, but the Centre is proceeding in a structured way," he noted. The Karnataka government on Monday began a comprehensive caste census among SC communities to collect sub-caste-wise demographic data. The survey will be held from May 5 to 17 in three phases, with oversight from retired High Court Judge Nagamohan Das. Siddaramaiah, defending the exercise, said it aims to enable internal reservation and correct historical imbalances. Over 65,000 teachers have been appointed as enumerators for the exercise, which also includes online self-declaration and data verification camps. The move follows an August 2024 Supreme Court order allowing states to introduce internal quotas for SCs based on empirical data. The final report is expected within 60 days of completion of the field work. UNI BDN CS

CM Siddaramaiah slams BJP for ‘double standards' on caste census

HANGAL(HAVERI): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has accused the BJP of double standards on the issue of caste census, pointing out that the party which once opposed it, is now welcoming the move after the Union government announced its intention to conduct a nationwide survey. Speaking to reporters in Akki Alur on Sunday, Siddaramaiah said, 'Earlier, BJP leaders made politically motivated statements against the caste census. Now, they appear to be supporting it, based on changing realities.' Quoting a well-known saying, he remarked, 'For BJP leaders, water becomes sacred only when it comes from a conch.' Responding to former prime minister HD Deve Gowda's allegation that the Congress is adopting double standards on the issue of Pakistan, following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Siddaramaiah hit back: 'What was Deve Gowda saying about Narendra Modi before leaning towards the BJP, and what is he saying now? If anyone is following double standards, it's Deve Gowda himself.' The Chief Minister also stressed the need for a dedicated task force to identify and counter communal and anti-social elements. He said the government is planning to establish such a force specifically to address communal violence in the coastal belt. 'I will discuss the proposal with Home Minister G Parameshwara and take appropriate action,' he added. Asked about police claims that part of the Rs 25 lakh compensation given by the government to the family of Fazil, who was murdered in 2022, was allegedly used by his brother to fund the contract killing of Suhas Shetty, Siddaramaiah declined to comment. He, however, said he would speak with district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Parameshwara, who recently visited Mangaluru. On the occasion of the government's second anniversary, the CM confirmed that a special programme is being organised in Vijayanagar district to mark the administration's achievements.

A special force is needed to curb and detect anti-social forces: CM

Hanagal: A special force is needed to curb and detect anti-social forces, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday. Speaking to the media about the government's initiative to form a task force to combat communal violence in the coastal areas at the NDPU College premises, Akki Alur. CM Siddaramaiah said that he would speak to the Home Minister and take action. When Fazil was killed in Mangaluru, the government had given a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. The police told in a press conference that Fazil's brother had given supari for the murder of Suhas Shetty from the same compensation money. When a reporter asked whether government money was misused, the Chief Min-ister said that he did not know about this. Yesterday, Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Home Minister G Parameshwar both visited Mangaluru. He said that he would give a response after talking to them. Responding to a media query whether the government has organised special programs in the wake of the government completing two years, he said that a two-year achievement program has been organised in Vijayanagar district. Those who were criticising Siddaramaiah for causing conflict between castes by conducting a caste census are now welcoming the central government conduct-ing a caste census with an open mind. It is like a holy place only if it comes from a conch shell. Earlier, they used to say it politically. It is understandable that they were not saying it on the basis of reality, right? The Chief Minister questioned. Responding to former Prime Minister Deve Gowda's statement that the Congress was following a double-edged sword on the issue of Pakistan, CM said what was Deve Gowda talking about Narendra Modi before joining the BJP, and what is he talking about now? He said that Deve Gowda has a double-edged sword.
