Defending champion Jannik Sinner showed no signs of rust after a one-month break as he cruised past Colombian qualifier Daniel Galan 6-1 6-1 in the Cincinnati Open second round on Saturday, while third seed Iga Swiatek thumped Anastasia Potapova 6-1 6-4.
World number one Sinner opted to take some time off after his Wimbledon win but was in pristine form at the ATP 1000 event after a first-round bye, producing just four unforced errors.
He will next play Canadian Gabriel Diallo.
"It's very difficult to play here, I feel like the ball is flying, it's very fast," the Italian told Tennis Channel after closing out the match in 59 minutes.
"So when you lose confidence with a couple of shots, it makes it very, very difficult to play."
Poland's Swiatek was back on top form after an early exit in Montreal as she sprinted through the first set and fended off four break points in the second.
She next plays Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who she has defeated in all three previous meetings, in the third round of the U.S. Open tune-up tournament.

South Africa level T20 series after Brevis ton flattens Australia
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox South Africa levelled the three-match Twenty20 series against Australia after Dewald Brevis smashed an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls to set up their emphatic 53-run victory in the second match in Darwin on Tuesday. Brevis smashed the highest score by a South African batsman in a T20 International to power the tourists to a commanding 218-7 despite a top order wobble at the Marrara Stadium. Australia were bundled out for 165 in 17.4 overs as their nine-match winning streak in the format came to an end. Player of the match Brevis said after being reminded of his record: "I haven't really thought of it like that, to be honest, but I'm just extremely grateful to God and it's been great. "You obviously want to win and come back stronger after the first game, so that was fantastic. "Everyone played their part, whatever it was. We took our catches, the guys nailed their plans, and it was just great." Put in to bat, South Africa began briskly but slumped to 57-3 inside seven overs with skipper Aiden Markram among the dismissed trio. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Brevis combined with Tristan Stubbs (31) and counter-attacked in spectacular fashion to prop up South Africa. The 22-year-old raced to a 41-ball hundred, his first in T20 Internationals, and remained unbeaten after a knock studded with eight sixes and 12 fours. Australia wobbled early in their reply, losing opener Travis Head to Markram's part-time spin in the second over. Teenaged left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka (3-57) conceded five fours in his first over but claimed the important wicket of Cameron Green and returned to remove Maxwell and Mitchell Owen. Tim David (50) hit his second half-century of the series but Australia kept losing wickets, which derailed their chase. The teams meet in Cairns on Saturday for the decider. REUTERS

Robot dog in Mexico teaches animal kindness on the streets
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Waldog will flag rubbish on the street, potholes and register fellow street dogs. MONTERREY, Mexico - He walks, he talks, he runs and he plays. He's 'Waldog,' an AI-powered robot that is making the rounds in the northern city of Monterrey, Mexico to raise awareness about animal abuse and welfare. With a metallic, friendly voice, Waldog is about the size of a beagle and initiates conversations with children and adults about animal rights. "Hi, I'm Waldog, and I'm here to give a voice to those who don't have one, the animals who live on the streets," he told one group of laughing residents in the low-income neighbourhood of Santa Catarina in Monterrey on Aug 8. Waldog told them his job is to 'raise awareness' about animal treatment. Federal Senator Waldo Fernandez of Monterrey told Reuters that he paid US$4,084 (S$5, 245) for Waldog with his own money and named the pet after himself. Waldog needs adult accompaniment and is operated by a remote control. Mr Fernandez, a self-professed animal activist, said Waldog seeks to encourage kindness and responsibility toward animals and humans alike. But it will also serve a practical purpose, Mr Fernandez said in an Instagram post: Waldog will flag rubbish on the street, potholes and register fellow street dogs. Top stories Swipe. Select. For now, Mr Fernandez said, Waldog has a full agenda: It will visit schools, plazas and neighbourhoods across Monterrey's metro area, in addition to posing for lots of selfies. REUTERS

Tusk says Poland must not let Russia drive wedge between Warsaw and Kyiv
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox WARSAW - The Polish prime minister said on Tuesday that Russia was seeking to drive a wedge between Warsaw and Kyiv ahead of peace talks, after an outcry over a spectator waving a Ukrainian nationalist flag at a concert in Poland's national stadium. Poland has been one of Ukraine's staunchest backers since Russia invaded in 2022, but some Poles have grown weary of refugees from their war-torn neighbour, while historical tensions between the nations over World War Two massacres have at times risen to the surface, straining ties and boosting the Polish far-right. Many Poles were angered by footage shared on social media which showed an audience member at a concert in the National Stadium in Warsaw on Saturday waving the red and black flag of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a nationalist group Poland says was involved in the 1943-1945 Volhynia massacres of Poles. However, Prime Minister Donald Tusk told a government meeting that Poles and Ukrainians must not allow themselves to be divided ahead of a crucial summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday. "It's truly fundamental from the perspective of Polish security that Putin not receive gifts before these talks, and such a gift for Putin would undoubtedly be conflict between Ukrainians and Poles," Tusk said. "This is precisely the... goal of Russian agents and Russia's actions in Poland." The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. Top stories Swipe. Warsaw police said they had detained 109 people during the concert by Belarusian rapper Max Korzh for offences ranging from drug possession to assaulting security personnel. Tusk said that proceedings were underway to deport 63 people following the disturbances at the concert - 57 Ukrainians and six Belarusians. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian man who was filmed waving the UPA flag apologised for his actions in a video shared on social media, saying that he had only meant to show support for his country. REUTERS
