McMahon and Beck homers send MLB-worst Rockies to a 6-4 win over the Twins

DENVER (AP) — Ryan McMahon's two-run homer capped a four-run first inning, Jordan Beck homered and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle and the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies opened their second half of the season with a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
The Rockies had four straight extra-base hits in the bottom of the first with doubles by Tyler Freeman and Mickey Moniak, a triple by Beck and McMahon's 14th home run.
Beck hit his 11th homer in the second inning and finished with two RBIs.
Kyle Freeland (2-10) earned his second win in 18 starts this season. His last victory was on June 4 against Miami. Against Minnesota, he went six innings, giving up one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Seth Halvorsen earned his ninth save.
Willi Castro's three-run homer off Jake Bird in the seventh inning cut the Twins' deficit to 6-4. Byron Buxton had three hits, including his 22nd homer in the fifth. Ryan Jeffers matched a career high with four hits.
Chris Paddack (3-9) went five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five.
Colorado's Ezequíel Tovar returned from the injured list and started at shortstop. Infielder Thairo Estrada went on the 10-day IL with a sprained left thumb.
Key moment
The Rockies' run of extra-base hits in the first, including McMahon's homer, provided the bulk of their offense.
Key stat
The Rockies won for just the 11th time at Coors Field. They have lost 36 at home. Colorado needs to win 19 of its final 65 games in the second half to avoid matching the White Sox's modern-era record of 121 losses, set last season.
Up next
Minnesota has not announced a starter for Saturday's game. Colorado will send RHP Antonio Senzatela (3-13, 6.60 ERA).

Pirates sending 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes to Reds for reliever Rogers, prospect Stafura, AP source says

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates are trading Gold Glove-winning third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to Cincinnati for veteran reliever Taylor Rogers and shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the trade was not official. The swap gives the Reds an elite defender at the hot corner with a manageable contract. The 28-year-old Hayes, a Gold Glove winner in 2023, has five-plus years left on the extension he signed with Pittsburgh in 2022 and will make $7 million in 2026 and 2027, $8 million in 2028 and 2029 before rising to $12 million in 2030. Hayes, the son of former major leaguer Charlie Hayes and a first-round draft pick by the Pirates in 2015, has struggled to find consistency at the plate since his splashy debut during the final month of the COVID-19-shortened season in 2020. He hit .376 with five homers in 24 games immediately after being called up, numbers that he didn't come close to matching while playing a full 162-game schedule. Hayes is hitting .236 with two home runs and 36 RBIs this season for the Pirates, who sit in last place in the NL Central thanks largely to an offense that ranks near the bottom or at the bottom in the majors in most significant statistical categories. The Pirates have several internal option to replace Hayes in the short-term, including Jared Triolo, who won a Gold Glove as a utility infielder in 2024. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Pittsburgh's everyday shortstop this season, moved over to third for the Pirates' series-finale against San Francisco on Thursday. Rogers remains an effective left-handed option out of the bullpen at 34. The 10-year veteran, an All-Star with Minnesota in 2021, is 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 40 appearances with the Reds this season. Stafura, 20, was a second-round pick by Cincinnati in 2023. He is hitting .262 with four home runs and 48 RBIs in 88 games with Class A Daytona this season. ___ AP MLB:

5 takeaways from Day 5 of Broncos training camp

The Denver Broncos had a special guest at training camp on Wednesday. Emmanuel Sanders, who played for the club from 2014-2019, visited Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit with his son for Day 5 of practice. Sanders, who retired in 2022, played under Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saints in 2020. A two-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl 50 champion, Sanders hauled in 704 receptions for 9,245 yards and 51 touchdowns during his 12-year career in the NFL. He also rushed for 202 yards and a score and went 3-of-3 passing for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Sanders ranks 10th on Denver's all-time receiving list with 5,361 yards, and his 28 touchdown catches rank 13th in franchise history. Now, here are five quick takeaways from Wednesday's practice. Broncos training camp takeaways Day 5 1. Broncos injury report: Wide receiver A.T. Perry (ankle; PUP) and linebackers Drew Sanders (foot) and Alex Singleton (thumb) are still sidelined. Additionally, receiver Devaughn Vele and rookie outside linebacker Que Robinson did not practice. Payton did not speak to the media Wednesday, so there's no update on the status of Vele and Robinson. 2. Blake Watson adds intrigue to running back battle: J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey are the obvious top two options in Denver's backfield. Behind them? Good luck trying to guess Payton's depth chart. Audric Estime was just drafted last year, Jaleel McLaughlin was one of the team's most productive RBs last fall and the team has praised Tyler Badie this offseason. Oh, yeah, there's Watson, too! The second-year undrafted RB took a big hit from undrafted rookie linebacker Jordan Turner on Wednesday, but he also drew strong reviews for his day on the ground overall. How many RBs will Denver carry on the 53-man roster? Is there room for Watson? We'll find out in late August. 3. Two young linebackers stepping up: We noted yesterday that Levelle Bailey has impressed with Sanders (foot) and Singleton (thumb) injured. Bailey continues to look sharp, but he's not alone. Jordan Turner, a UDFA out of Michigan State, has also stood out at linebacker. It sounds like the Broncos will have a very interesting linebacker battle during preseason this summer. 4. Trent Sherfield buzz continues to grow: When Denver signed Sherfield this spring, the expectation was that he was primarily brought in for his special teams contributions. The 29-year-old receiver continues to make plays on offense, though, and the hype is growing. 'He's tough, and he can run," Payton said of Sherfield last weekend. "The other thing he can do is block, and so we've always had a handful of receivers that can run and stretch the field and when you get one that can do that and then block also, you can set up play action, marries well to the run game. He's pretty competitive.' After losing Lil'Jordan Humphrey this offseason, the Broncos might have found their replacement in Sherfield. 5. Bo Nix's mobility remains a strength: Nix rushed for 430 yards and four touchdowns on 92 carries last season, averaging 4.7 yards per tote. "It's a strength," Payton said Tuesday when asked about Nix's mobility. "I mentioned this before, when the combine came, he didn't shuttle. He didn't do a number of these drills that I thought he would be exceptional at. Later, he told me he had a turf toe, and it made sense. But when you watched him, you thought, 'This guy is tough to sack.' He won a lot of downs for us last year with his feet." Nix only took 24 sacks last season -- an impressive total for a rookie -- as he proved to be an elusive NFL quarterback. The Broncos will be back on the field tomorrow (Thursday) as they continue camp (view the full schedule). Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Hayes, is in the fourth year of an eight-year, $70 million contract extension signed shortly after the start of the 2022 season. The 28-year-old was in his sixth overall season with the Pirates after they selected him with the 32nd pick of the 2015 draft out of Concordia Lutheran High School in Texas. In 576 career games with the Pirates, Hayes posted a .254/.307/.369 batting line with 101 doubles, 16 triples, 39 home runs, 212 RBI and 61 stolen bases. His best season came in 2023, when he hit .271 with a .762 OPS while setting career-highs in doubles (31), triples (7), home runs (15) and RBI (61).
