Four big reveals from Taylor Swift's ‘New Heights' podcast episode with Jason and Travis Kelce
1. Swift outlines her new album, 'The Life of a Showgirl' The biggest reveal of the episode was Swift's wealth of details about her upcoming album, 'The Life of a Showgirl,' which is Advertisement 'This is the record I've been wanting to make for a very long time,' Swift told the Kelce brothers. Swift revisits the emotional journey of buying back her master recordings Swift opened up to the Kelce brothers about the emotional process of 'I always refer to it as 'I got my music back this summer,' but I never owned my music at all,' Swift said, noting that she signed her record deal at age 15, and that many artists don't own their masters. Advertisement The singer revealed that she'd been saving up to buy her master recordings since she was a teenager, and that she was devastated when her former label, Big Machine, sold them to music executive Scooter Braun in 2019. At the time, Swift criticized the deal in a 'It really ripped my heart out of my chest, and I told everyone exactly how that felt for me and what I was going through,' Swift told the Kelce brothers. 'I started basically, defiantly, re-recording my music because I wanted to own it, and this was the only way I thought it was ever going to happen.' While she was excited to re-record her albums, Swift admitted to thinking about not owning her music 'every day.' Swift pursued purchasing the master recordings following the conclusion of her 'Eras Tour,' after deciding with her team to approach Shamrock Capital, the private equity firm that bought them from Braun. However, she didn't want to strike a deal to own a percentage of the master recordings, and instead hoped to buy them outright. 'I want to own all of it,' Swift said, noting that it was a 'long shot' that 'they would sell that asset to me.' Swift started to tear up while talking about her family's role in helping her strike the deal, revealing that she sent her mother and brother — rather than lawyers or managers — to speak with the firm. The singer said that her family helped convey how much the music meant to her on a personal level. Advertisement 'I'm in the business of human emotion,' Swift said. 'I would so much rather lead heart-first in something like this.' A few months after the Super Bowl, Swift got a call from her mother while hanging out with Travis in Kansas City. 'She's like, 'You got your music,'' Swift said. 'I just like, very dramatically hit the floor, for real, like honestly just started bawling my eyes out.' The singer then ran to the room where Travis was playing video games and broke the good news to him through tears. 'I started crying too, you know I'm a crier,' Travis said. 'I was just so happy for you.' Charlie Riedel/Associated Press 3. Swift and Kelce share their love story The couple didn't shy away from talking about their relationship, including how Travis tried to get Swift's attention before they started dating in what she called the 'shooting your shot heard 'round the world.' The Chiefs star famously admitted his interest in her on the podcast in 2023, when he talked about trying (and failing) to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his number on it at one of her concerts. 'This podcast got me a boyfriend, ever since Travis decided to use it as his personal dating app about two years ago,' Swift joked. 'He threw a man-tantrum, it's so funny,' she later added. 'It was such a wild, romantic gesture to just be like, 'I want to date you!'' Swift pointed out how Travis never reached out to her management team, and that she didn't know about the attempt until the 2023 podcast came out. 'I was like, 'Did he ever reach out to be, like, in the tents, or did we know he was in the building?'' Swift said. 'He came with Pat [Mahomes], and he thought that because he knows the elevator lady that he could talk to her about getting down to my dressing room.' Advertisement 'That's how it works in 1973,' she joked. Swift called the public plea a sweet gesture, comparing it to a boombox outside of her window like a 1980s John Hughes movie. 'I was like, 'If this guy isn't crazy, which is a big if, this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager,'' Swift admitted. Taylor Swift performed at Gillette Stadium on May 19, 2023. Erin Clark/Globe Staff 4. Swift opens up about the physical toll of the 'Eras Tour' Swift got real about her historic, globe-spanning 'Eras Tour,' which wrapped in Vancouver last December. The singer admitted that, after traveling for so long across the world, she was glad to not be on the go all the time. 'It feels great Jason, to be honest, I'm not going to lie to you,' Swift said. 'I do miss it, but it was perfect for what it was.' The GRAMMY Award winner also talked about the physical toll of touring and how she was often in a 'state of perpetual physical discomfort,' comparing it to the brothers' experiences during an NFL season. Travis backed her claims, noting the intense recovery station in her hotel room after her three-plus hour shows. 'The similarities were crazy,' Travis said, comparing Swift's physical regimens for concerts to his routines for football. 'I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, she does more than I do.'' Later in the podcast, Travis admitted that she outworks him when they exercise together. 'We've been to the gym numerous times, and she works harder than me every time,' Travis said. Taylor Swift Jokes She Might Upset a ‘Lot of Male Sports Fans' by Appearing on Travis Kelce's Podcast
Taylor Swift is making her debut on Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce's New Heights podcast, whether or not certain 'male sports fans' are ready for it. Hours ahead of the pop star's highly anticipated appearance on the Wednesday (Aug. 13) episode — on which she is expected to reveal more details about her new album, The Life of a Showgirl — Swift joked about a portion of the show's audience that might be a little disgruntled to see her as a guest. 'You guys have a lot of male sports fans that listen to your podcast,' she quips in a clip posted to the New Heights social media accounts. More from Billboard Everything We Know About Taylor Swift's 'The Life of a Showgirl' (So Far) Taylor Swift Fans Have the 'Zoomies' Over 'Life of a Showgirl' News: 'I Am Bouncing Around … Like a Feral Cat' Travis Kelce Explains How He & Taylor Swift Fell in Love 'Organically': 'It Kind of Just Took the F–k Off' 'And I think we all know that if there's one thing that male sports fans want to see in their spaces and on their screens, it's more of me,' she continues sarcastically as the Kansas City Chiefs tight end laughs next to her. The snippet serves as a teaser for Swift's full interview with Travis and Jason, which premieres at 7 p.m. ET on the New Heights channels Wednesday. The two cohosts/brothers have been getting fans hyped up for her appearance since Monday (Aug. 11), when they first revealed an episode featuring 'a VERY special guest' was on the way. And while countless Swifties are bursting with excitement over the premise of the 14-time Grammy winner chatting with the Kelces — especially knowing that she'll likely provide more information on her 12th studio album, which she announced early Tuesday morning (Aug. 12) — Swift has cause to be wary of some football fans objecting to her appearance. Since she began attending Chiefs games to cheer on her boyfriend in 2023, a chunk of viewers have complained about her presence on NFL broadcasts — so much so that the league released a statement defending its coverage. 'The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we've leaned into in real time,' the NFL said at the time. 'The vast majority of our content has remained focused on the game, our players and variety of other initiatives.' But even if haters are gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, Swift definitely has two football lovers who are pumped up to see her on New Heights: Travis and Jason. Elsewhere in Wednesday's teaser video, the elder Kelce almost runs out of oxygen while passionately listing off her many accomplishments in an introduction, to which Swift responds, 'Thank you for screaming for, like, 47 seconds, that was so nice … Thanks for having me on my favorite podcast!' Charli xcx Explains Why People Are ‘Envious' of Addison Rae
Charli xcx met Addison Rae years ago, when the TikToker-turned-artist was first starting to write songs. Since then, the two have traded features on each other's work: Charli guested on Rae's early track '2 Die 4' and Rae returned the favor by jumping on the 'Von Dutch' remix. But even outside the studio, Charli and Rae have struck up a friendship built on mutual admiration. On Wednesday (Aug. 13), Rae and her collaborators Elvira Anderfjärd and Luka Kloser cover Billboard's annual Producers Issue to talk through the creation of Rae's debut album, Addison. For the story, Rae reflected on what she learned from being part of Charli's brat, saying, 'I think what was so special about what [Charli] did [with brat] was that it was so true to her, and there was just kind of no other way to categorize it. So for me, I just tried to be as intentional and free flowing as possible, which is a hard combination… I think that was something that [Charli did] so gracefully.' 'I love it when she talks really specifically about her journey to where she is now because her journey's so unique,' says Charli. 'It's hard to flip the public perception of you — and she did it effortlessly. People are envious of that. I love hearing her talk about about voyeurism, fame, money. She tells stories in a really cool and potent way.' During Billboard's conversation with Rae, the singer describes the challenge of trying to find her sound while existing in the public eye. Her first single, 'Obsessed,' released in 2021, was widely panned by critics and fans alike. 'Initially, I was pretty let down by myself in a lot of ways, because I had such high expectations,' Rae said. 'And then over time, I just completely let that go and released it.' Rae also described how the release of 'Diet Pepsi,' the first single from Addison and her first song written with Anderfjärd and Kloser, released in August 2024, transformed public opinion, even though some in her inner circle initially had doubts about the song. 'There were people I played it to who were like, 'I don't know if this is what people want from you,'' Rae remembered. 'And I was like, 'Well, I don't think people know what they want from me.'' The song went on to be a breakthrough for Rae, peaking at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marking her as a pop star to watch. Rae credits Charli, and the experience of working on 'Von Dutch' shortly before 'Diet Pepsi' was written, as a creative turning point. 'Charli really gave me the confidence as a writer, honestly. That's why I felt so sure going into our sessions [for Addison.] Most of the sessions I had done before the 'Von Dutch' remix session with Charli, I had a lot of writers in the room, and I was feeling like I was leaning on writers a lot. Charli really leaned on me and gave me so much confidence, and that's really when a big shift happened for me as far as being a songwriter.' Charli has noticed the shift, too: 'Every time I've written with her she's just become more and more confident in who she is, which, yes, happens with every artist, but I feel like her growth and evolution has been expedited because she knows herself and because she's truly not worried about what people think of her. She goes off into her own world and is her own source of inspiration. She makes it happen for herself. That's how you evolve.' When Billboard asked Rae why she thinks she's managed to become as successful as she has, Rae remarked that 'fearlessness' and 'timing' are big contributors to it. Charli agreed, also noting her 'fearlessness and joie de vivre.' 'She really is living in the moment and experimenting with whatever she wants to in a totally non-jaded and fantastic way,' Charli adds. 'It's really rare to see in this day and age where everyone's so worried about doing something right or wrong or being cool or relevant or whatever. Her artistic flare is so pure and true to who she is and what she wants. It's special.'
