Retired Engineer Loses Over RM200,000 To Investment Scam
SIBU, May 28 (Bernama) -- A retired private-sector engineer from here lost RM224,403 in a month after falling victim to an online investment scam that falsely promised lucrative returns of up to RM750,000.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the victim, a man in his 60s, only realised he had been scammed when he was asked to pay an additional RM100,700 as 'tax' to withdraw the supposed investment profits, which did not exist.
He said the victim was initially drawn to the so-called investment offer, promoted as the 'Investment Stock Market' by a company named KKR Investment on Instagram on April 9. Later, he received further explanation via WhatsApp from someone claiming to be a company representative.

Malaysia shares dual 5G strategy with region, says Fahmi
TOKYO: Malaysia has shared its experience and direction in implementing dual 5G networks with the Asia Pacific region, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic). The Communications Minister said this was achieved through participation in the Asia Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025 which concluded here on Saturday. He said the focus was also on efforts to address online security issues that were a challenge for many countries, as well as the National Digital Network infrastructure programme. Fahmi, who led the country's delegation, said the meet provided an opportunity for Malaysia to show other countries what it had achieved through the various programmes. 'Our experience in implementing the 5G network first as a single and then a dual network and implementing large projects was important,' he told Bernama. Fahmi said there was a need for regulatory bodies from APT member nations to emphasise aspects of online supervision and security, including online gambling and cyber fraud issues in the region. 'One of the ideas I put forward was the need for senior officers to meet every year, and it is appropriate to hold a workshop for countries in the Asia Pacific region to reveal the problems faced and how these are resolved. 'We can share our experiences, lessons and solutions that have been implemented, which can be adopted by other countries,' he added. Also held in conjunction with the two-day meet were a series of bilateral meetings with Fahmi's Asia Pacific counterparts and international organisations responsible for the telecommunications industry. The minister held bilateral meetings with delegations from host Japan, Indonesia, Fiji, China, Iran, Australia, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the GSM Association (GSMA). Fahmi said there was a need for agencies such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to closely examine the legal aspects of efforts to regulate online safety, as done by Australia. 'We have conveyed this to Australia and we hope that a team from Malaysia will be able to go there or hold online discussions for us to examine and evaluate,' he added. Meanwhile, Malaysia expressed its intention to continue its membership as a council member in the ITU for the 2027-2030 session. 'We also conveyed this to the counterparts I held bilateral meetings with and we hope that friends of Malaysia will support our presence in the ITU Council,' he added. The APT-MM 2025 edition also saw the launch of the Tokyo Statement 2025 which emphasised six priorities – digital connectivity, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, trust and security, digital inclusion and capacity building, environmental sustainability, and regional and international cooperation.

Govt clearing path for more young farmers

Acknowledging that many farmers were now in their 60s, the Deputy Minister said the issue was not unique to Malaysia but part of a global trend. The country is implementing targeted measures to address the issue, he added. 'We are taking proactive steps to attract more young people to take part in the agriculture sector,' he told reporters after joining Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad to close the Fama Fest 2025 at the Gopeng Rural Transformation Centre, yesterday. Arthur was commenting on the preliminary findings from the 2024 Agriculture Census, which noted that Malaysians aged over 60 make up the largest segment of the country's farmers while around 90% of farmers had only completed their education up to the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia level. The census – the first in more than two decades – aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the country's agricultural and food production landscape. Arthur said among the key initiatives was organising programmes such as Fama Fest to create wider market access for young agropreneurs. He said these events not only helped promote and sell agricultural products but also highlighted the sector's potential for generating lucrative income. 'We want to show that the agriculture and agri-food industry is a viable and profitable career path. 'The ministry is also advocating for a shift away from conventional farming methods to modern, technology-driven agriculture,' said Arthur. 'This includes the use of innovation in every aspect of the industry, from production to operations, and creating a broader ecosystem of employment opportunities,' he added. Arthur said the ministry was also actively promoting agricultural Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes. 'These courses, which cover areas such as livestock, fisheries and vegetable farming, are fully funded by the government, including accommodation and daily expenses, to make them more accessible to youth. 'There is also a need for cooperation from state governments. It is important that land and financing are made available to ensure young people have the resources to grow and expand their agricultural ventures.' Arthur said the ministry hoped that these combined efforts would revitalise the sector, ensuring food security and sustainability for the future.

Zafrul's ministership not affected
KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's application to join PKR has not been discussed by parties in the unity government yet, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. But, the Prime Minister said Tengku Zafrul's position as Investment, Trade and Industry Minister is not affected, given his good performance as a minister. 'Tengku Zafrul carried out his tasks as minister very well. Investments are in the hundreds of billions and he has led his ministry well. 'Now, he chose to apply (to PKR), we haven't discussed anything yet. Let him perform his haj pilgrimage first. Let us refrain from unhealthy interpretations. 'For PKR, we have to discuss this with our friends. But, his position as minister is not affected,' said Anwar when met after the closing ceremony of the KL International Book Fair (KLIBF) at the World Trade Centre yesterday. Anwar also denied there will be a Cabinet reshuffle. 'Two ministers have resigned, now give them time to reflect on what they want to do. Now they are on leave. I don't think we should preempt. 'The government is functioning as usual,' he said. 'We have not discussed it. It is too early,' he added. On Saturday, Ahmad Zahid said Tengku Zafrul's exit would mean Umno is left with six ministers from the previous seven. On Friday, Tengku Zafrul said he was resigning as Umno supreme council member, as Kota Raja division leader and a party member. He said he will be starting the process of joining PKR. His decision comes two days after two Cabinet ministers from PKR resigned – Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli (Economy) and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability). On another matter, Anwar announced that some 400,000 teachers nationwide will be given book vouchers in an effort to promote the reading habit. The Prime Minister said last year, students attending KLIBF received book vouchers worth RM100. 'This year, we will give teachers as well. For next year, we have to look at how the economy does first,' he said in a closing speech for KLIBF yesterday. Anwar hoped that the initiative would inculcate the reading habit among teachers and students who attended the programme. He said more details on the book voucher would be announced soon by the Education Ministry.
