Jurassic World Rebirth

Time Out30-06-2025
The 'Rebirth' in this Jurassic World sequel's title is apt because this seventh entry is a renaissance of sorts for a franchise that looked ready to curl up and turn to fossil. In 2022's woeful Jurassic World Dominion the planet was shrugging at its proliferation of dinosaurs – and it was easy for cinema-going audiences to do the same. How depressing to watch the awe Steven Spielberg summoned back in 1993 vanish in a globe-spanning story where most of the globe was done with dinos. How, the inner eight-year-old in us wanted to scream, could anyone be bored of dinosaurs? In a dinosaur movie?
Some of that dino-fatigue plays into the laborious opening stretches here. Big beasts shamble though the Big Apple and New Yorkers just beep their horns and grumble about the tails in their tailbacks. Happily, director Gareth Edwards (The Creator, Godzilla) OG screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park) soon pivot back to where the humans-messing-with-nature premise works best: on a tropical island overrun with hungry prehistoric beasties.
That long-winded prelude does fill in the odd handy blank: to survive, the dinosaurs have mostly retreated to the jungles and seas near the equator, no-go areas for humans. There, a small group of adventurers must venture on the dime of Rupert Friend's slimy exec. His pharma company is on the hunt for a potential cure for heart disease that's carried in the blood of three dino species. Scarlett Johansson and Ali Mahershala's guns for hire will provide security; Jonathan Bailey's palaeontologist will point out the correct creatures to aim the dart gun at.
It delivers everything you'd expect and not much that you wouldn't
Throwing a terrified family and some munchable supporting characters into the mix, Jurassic World Rebirth gets on with delivering everything you'd expect and not much that you wouldn't. Credit to Edwards, who gives us a kind of mega-budget version of his arresting debut sci-fi Monsters, substituting lush Thailand locations for the movie's Central American island and delivering one or two of the best sequences since Jurassic Park. One T-rex attack along a set of rapids is a masterclass in action design.
He's blessed with a winning cast too. Johansson, Ali and Bailey are a charismatic trio to build the movie around, and Friend gives excellent slimeball.
And the dinosaurs? Rebirth knows it needs to make its scaly stars frightening and surprising again and manages it in Spielbergian style. It even brings a few new species, like airborne carnivore the Quetzalcoatlus, off the subs bench. Yes, there's still newbies left.

A super-viral faux flower market is coming to Rockefeller Center this fall

Remember that viral faux flower exhibition that popped up on Roosevelt Island last fall? Called Flower Market, the installation by artist Cj Hendry invited New Yorkers to visit for free—and even get a complimentary plush flower to take home. Fans of flowers (and free stuff) responded in droves—so much so that officials shut down part of Roosevelt Island because of overcrowding, and the artist moved the installation to Industry City in Brooklyn instead. Well, Flower Market is coming back this September 19–21, this time at Rockefeller Center, the artist announced yesterday in an all-caps Instagram post. Though official details haven't been announced yet—specifically, whether the installation will be free this time and how ticketing will work—it's certain to be a beautiful sight. The 2024 iteration of Flower Market filled a massive white tent with 100,000 plush roses, sunflowers, lilies and more in vibrant colors. Thousands of New Yorkers, including queen Martha Stewart herself, visited to stroll through the faux meadow and pick a bouquet. Fans of the show responded to Hendry's announcement with hundreds of comments. One person who attended last year wrote, "This is one of my fav memories of a solo parenting moment with my daughter!" Others said they're "SCREAMING with excitement!" and "Brb putting in a PTO request for day 1." As an artist, Hendry is known for inspiring joy and beauty, and she's graced New York City with her vision several times recently. Most recently, she exhibited Keff Joons, a surreal inflatable wonderland made for climbing—and snapping some very Instagrammable photos. In years past, her Pink Chairs, a pair of concrete chairs popped up in Prospect Park, and her adult playground called PLAIDground

Jay-Z teams up with Caesars and SL Green to bid for huge Times Square Casino project

MEGASTAR JAY-Z joined forces with some of the biggest names in the casino business, looking to pitch a Caesars Palace Times Square casino project in New York. The rapper - real name Shawn Carter - was among several attendees to sit in front of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) and bid for one of three $500 million downstate licenses. 1 The Roc Nation co-founder was representing a partnership alongside Caesars Palace and SL Green Properties and pledged $250million in benefits to the community as part of their pitch to convert an existing office on Broadway. They face stiff competition though with EIGHT applications in total having been submitted to the New York State Gaming Commission. Jay-Z, who grew up in Brooklyn, says the location was "perfect" for the partnership group and says the introduction of a casino resort would only "fulfil and enhance" the area, which he likened to huge landmarks around the world. The 150,000-square-foot gambling hall would boast 1000 casino rooms, a Caesars Sportsbook, four restaurants associated with high-profile chefs and a spa. Concerns over the venue becoming the main attraction to Broadway have been rebuffed by the entrepreneur, who insists they would only act as an 'additive' to a tourist spot which entices over 50 million tourists per year. During the presentation, Jay-Z said: "It's our chance to change the narrative and create something all around the world. "If we treat Times Square with the love and the attention that it requires, it can fulfill its promise. 'This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I believe, to support something that's homegrown. 'As we hear a lot of talk about community, we are the community. We're from this community. 'We're not coming to compete with Broadway. We're coming to be additive. "Anything that we've done in the past, we've always included the community. We've never excluded the community.' The group's proposition also indicated a forecasted $7 billion in direct tax revenue and $26.7 billion in local economic activity in the first 10 years. Roc Nation also stated they'd supported more than five million people with social impacts worth more than $78 million. More than 3,000 construction jobs would be created as a result if they were awarded a license, and the 3,800 permanent jobs it would create would be 'mostly filled by New Yorkers'. Harry Styles is here to help you orgasm, thanks to his NYC pop-up this weekend

Pop star-slash-psychedelic prince Harry Styles has been a sex symbol for the past decade, both as a member of boy-band juggernaut One Direction and as a "Watermelon Sugar"-loving solo act. And now he's helping New Yorkers tap into their naughty side with a sex toy pop-up store, coming to Elizabeth Street this weekend. An offshoot of Styles's lifestyle and wellness brand Pleasing—which sells nail polishes, face creams and comfy unisex crewnecks, among other things, and has itself popped up with temporary New York storefronts over the years—the pop-up will be dedicated to "Pleasing Yourself," the singer-actor's new line of sexual gadgets and goodies. Per the Pleasing website, that seemingly includes The Pleasing Double-Sided Vibrator, which can be used for both internal and external play (the more, the merrier, eh?), as well as The Pleasing Lube, a high-performance, FDA-approved silicone lubricant that can be used with the vibrating device. As announced on Instagram, the Pleasing Yourself pop-up will be coming to New York City on Friday, July 25 through Sunday, July 27, beginning at 11am ET each day at 251 Elizabeth Street in Soho. (Given how popular seemingly everything related to the performer is, you can very much expect folks to be lining up much earlier than that.) "Come explore our three-day pop-up in New York City at 251 Elizabeth Street, where your journey begins with a moment to yourself before discovering the new collection, alongside Pleasing bestsellers and a few special surprises," per the brand. "No small talk here, Pleasing Yourself favors presence over performance." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pleasing (@pleasing) According to The Cut, the Pleasing Yourself line will feature other products in the future, including a collaboration with Planned Parenthood for a special Harry Styles-approved condom release. 'More than a product launch, the launch campaign represents a gentle provocation—a nudge toward normalizing what's too often left unsaid. It's rooted in the belief that pleasure is nothing to apologize for, that self-touch can be a love language, and that old rules haven't always served us,' said the brand release.
