Emmys leave San Francisco-set ‘A Man on the Inside' on the outside

Emmy voters evidently didn't leave their hearts in San Francisco.
There are always surprising inclusions and omissions from any Emmy list, but one shocker from the nominations handed down Tuesday, July 15, was the exclusion of the Netflix sitcom ' A Man on the Inside.'
The comedy set and partially filmed in San Francisco received zero nominations, despite star Ted Danson receiving both Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for his role as Charles Nieuwendyk, a retired college professor who agrees to go undercover at a Nob Hill retirement home to find a missing ruby necklace.
Danson, best known for the 1980s sitcom 'Cheers,' holds the record for the most Emmy nods for a lead actor in a comedy series (14 nominations, with two wins), et he was unexpectedly left out this year. The nominees are Seth Rogen, Apple TV+'s ' The Studio '; Martin Short, Hulu's ' Only Murders in the Building '; Jeremy Allen White, FX/Hulu's ' The Bear '; Adam Brody, Netflix's 'Nobody Wants This'; and Jason Segel, Apple TV+'s ' Shrinking.'
Best comedy series nominations went to 'The Bear,' 'Nobody Wants This,' 'Only Murders in the Building,' 'Shrinking' and 'The Studio' as well as ABC's 'Abbott Elementary,' HBO/Max's 'Hacks' and FX/Hulu's 'What We Do in the Shadows.'
The reviews for 'A Man on the Inside' have been stellar since its debut in November, with Rotten Tomatoes rating it at 96% fresh from critics and 91% from viewers. It also has been watched by 12.4 million viewers, earning it the No. 14 spot on Nielsen's chart of most watched series.
It has also been renewed for a second season. Danson's real-life wife, Mary Steenburgen, will join him in the cast.
The show, inspired by the Oscar-nominated 2020 Chilean documentary 'The Mole Agent' is quirky and endearing, and gives dignity to the elderly community. It also, according to Chronicle culture critic Peter Hartlaub, provided one of the best hours of San Francisco television ever. (Episode 7, 'From Russian Hill with Love,' in which Charles and his new friend Calbert spend a day in the city, from a ferry ride to the Golden Gate Bridge to Oracle Park.)
But the creators of 'A Man on the Inside' can take hope from a pair of Apple TV+ shows that got some love Tuesday. 'Shrinking,' the comedy starring Segel and Harrison Ford received seven nominations for its second season and ' Slow Horses,' an espinage thriller starring Gary Oldman, received five noms for its fifth season. Each show was virtually ignored in their first seasons.
Maybe voters just need time to catch up.

'It's scary at moments': Creators say 'Wednesday' season 2 will bring real stakes and fear

If you thought 'Wednesday' was creepy and kooky before, season 2 is about to crank the horror up several notches. According to the show's creators, Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, the new season won't just flirt with spooky but dive headfirst into intense territory. When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Millar said: 'There's some moments which are definitely horror movie-worthy. We have that in season 1, but I think this season there are moments that are very intense, I'll say.' He added: 'Season 2 definitely has some moments which are more straightforward horror, and we're very aware that the show is watched by everybody in terms of the age groups. 'We want to make sure that it's never torture porn, but that there's enough bite to it that it feels that there are real stakes and that people die in this world, and it's scary at moments. And I think that's the great tonal shift that the show makes between comedy and horror.' After getting an early glimpse of 'Wednesday' season 2 through the official trailer (which included the first six minutes of the premiere) fans were recently treated to even more footage thanks to a brand-new trailer from the streaming service. In a chilling moment, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) has a premonition that her friend Enid (Emma Myers) is going to die, and that she'll be the one responsible. The creators also teased a shift toward a more 'complex mystery' in season 2, and it looks like Wednesday's unsettling premonition might be at the heart of it. Gough said: 'I also just feel like the world is bigger and you get to really explore other characters.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I'm genuinely glad this season is taking a darker turn as it just feels right for Wednesday. The blend of gothic horror and biting humor is what makes the Addams universe so iconic, and leaning further into the intense, eerie side of things only makes the world feel richer and more true to its roots. Ortega even said herself (h/t Vanity Fair): 'I think the feel that we're going for is a little bit more horror-inspired. Not to say that suddenly we're the goriest show of all time. I mean, there's six-year-olds watching. [For example], we're doing this thing now where Wednesday just kind of appears. She is a little bit of a jump scare herself.' "Wednesday" season 2 will be released on Netflix in two parts: Part 1 on August 6, and part 2 on September 3. Netflix's Black Mirror Faces Uncertain Future Without Original Duo

Black Mirror may be headed into uncharted territory. The creators of the dystopian sci-fi anthology, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, have officially parted ways with their Netflix-owned production company Broke & Bones, raising real questions about whether the show can continue as we know it. The move marks the end of a five-year exclusive deal with Netflix, which began in 2020 when the streamer invested $100 million into the duo's new company. Brooker, the show's creator and lead writer, and Jones, its longtime executive producer, had been the driving force behind Black Mirror since it first launched in the U.K. in 2011. Netflix acquired the series in 2015, turning it into a global hit with a signature mix of tech-driven paranoia, social commentary, and psychological horror. According to Deadline, Brooker and Jones are now free to pursue new projects with other studios. Their departure from Broke & Bones doesn't necessarily mean the end of Black Mirror, but it certainly throws its future into doubt. Season 7 dropped earlier this year with solid reviews, but without its original creators at the helm, fans are already bracing for a potential drop in quality if Netflix continues the series without them. It's unclear why the two chose to leave, but after 14 years of Black Mirror, the decision could be as simple as wanting to explore new creative ground. Brooker has hinted at other ambitions in the past, including a potential interest in writing for Doctor Who, which he once turned down due to scheduling conflicts. While Black Mirror might survive as a brand, its soul may prove harder to replicate. The series has always been uniquely tied to Brooker's voice—satirical, bleak, and uncomfortably prophetic. Losing that could fundamentally alter what the show is. The good news? The duo's exit frees them up to build new worlds, possibly outside the Netflix ecosystem. Whether those worlds will rival Black Mirror in cultural impact remains to be seen, but whatever they create next, it's worth keeping an eye Black Mirror Faces Uncertain Future Without Original Duo first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 13, 2025
