‘Confined in small locked room,' Indian travellers to Russia allege they were detained without explanation

The Russian officials were speaking among themselves in Russian and later informed us that we were being deported. We were then moved to another room - filled with other people. Some of them claimed that they were held for two to three days.'
He further writes, 'We are being treated as criminals. There has been no communication or clarity from the authorities about our reason for deportation. At the moment, we are confined in a small locked room, with no proper information or basic assistance. The treatment we are receiving is inhumane, and we are feeling helpless and humiliated.'
Tanwar is concerned that they are likely to be sent back via Baku, Azerbaijan, where they might face similar treatment. He also said that the authorities were not allowing them to book flight tickets to return to India voluntarily.
"We are so scared of the authorities here that we are even hesitant to raise a complaint or speak publicly... We are stuck here with no idea when we will be released - it might take 2-3 days, or maybe even 4-5," he said.

The 23-year-old began playing the popular Free Fire -- a battle royale-style survival shooter mobile game that allows players from around the globe to interact with each other. Over the next few months, Sohail came in contact with other players, and thus began his spiral towards extremism. Sohail was arrested in September last year, and the chargesheet filed by Rajasthan's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has revealed details not just about Sohail but also foreign-linked online networks that are targeting Indians to spread their extremist ideologies. The ATS has formally presented its case in court, charging Sohail under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which pertains to advocating or inciting unlawful activity. The court is set to begin hearings in the case on July 16. Gateway To Radicalisation Sohail's engagement with the online gaming platform led him into encrypted chat groups, many of which had associations with radical networks allegedly operating from Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. According to the ATS, Sohail became a member of over 60 such online groups and acted as an administrator in several of them. These groups operated under the guise of gaming forums but, according to the ATS, were spreading anti-India propaganda. It was within these networks that Sohail began corresponding with individuals operating Pakistani phone numbers. The chargesheet names contacts saved in his phone as "Hameed Mustafa", "Mahboob Ali", and "PK Rawalpindi". Authorities believe these individuals are associated with digital cells operating from across the border. 'Mujahid Mian' The ATS alleges that Sohail, using the alias 'Mujahid Mian', ran a YouTube channel that promoted inflammatory content, including visuals of Taliban fighters and protest footage related to the Babri Masjid, Jama Masjid, and the 2022 Amravati riots. Several videos, recovered from his devices by forensic teams, were said to contain communally charged content. In addition to YouTube, Sohail was active on other platforms, including Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The forensic report submitted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) on February 28 last year confirmed this. To mask his identity, Sohail is reported to have employed multiple mobile devices and SIM cards. He would activate a hotspot from one phone and use another to upload videos, ensuring his IP address was safe. Videos uploaded from one account were often 'liked' or 'boosted' using other accounts under his control, giving an artificial sense of reach and endorsement. According to the ATS, Sohail's radicalisation interacted with social media profiles claiming to be Pakistani women. The accounts used names suggestive of Islamic military ranks and referred to themselves as "commander" or "sister in arms". The conversations, conducted in English, reportedly included anti-India content. Sohail's Background Sohail lived in Shahpura, a semi-urban locality in Bhilwara district. His father works as a house painter. Sohail had studied till Class 12 in a government school and held a job at an auto parts shop with a monthly wage of Rs 8,000. His personal life was also on the cusp of change. He had become engaged to a woman from Madhya Pradesh, just 15 days before his arrest. There is no evidence so far to suggest that his immediate family or fiancee were aware of his online activities. Congress to hold strategy meet on July 15 for upcoming Parliament session
Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has convened a meeting of top party leaders on July 15 to finalise strategy for the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament, which is expected to be stormy with the opposition raring to raise several issues like EC's special intensive revision in Bihar and Operation Sindoor. Sources said the Parliamentary strategy group meeting would be attended by the Leaders of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, besides the deputy leaders in both houses and the chief whips and whips of the party. The meeting will be chaired by Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence and will also be attended by some senior leaders who are part of the strategy group. The government has announced that the Monsoon session of Parliament will begin on July 21 and continue till August 21, a week longer than planned earlier, signalling a heavy legislative agenda. The sources said the Congress is likely to take up the issues of special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar being carried out by the Election Commission (EC) ahead of the assembly polls. Assam woman defamed with AI-generated porn after fake link to adult film industry goes viral; engineer arrested
DIBRUGARH: A person has been arrested in Assam's Tinsukia district for allegedly morphing photographs and creating AI-generated pornographic videos of a woman and circulating those on social media, a senior police officer said on Sunday. Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police (in-charge) Sizal Agarwal said a complaint was received from the victim on Saturday stating that morphed images and videos were being used to defame her. The victim had been in the spotlight for the last few weeks after her purported image with an adult film actor surfaced, with claims that the Assam woman has joined the adult film industry in the US. "We received a complaint yesterday that the morphed and AI-generated photos and videos of the victim were being circulated on social media. The reference of an Instagram page was included with it, and when we searched for credentials of the page owner, we found a phone number which we traced to the accused," Agarwal said. "The accused had used the image of the victim to generate several obscene content and pornographic materials using AI software. They have a past acquaintance, and he did it due to personal reasons," he added. The accused, a mechanical engineer by qualification, was arrested from Tinsukia on Saturday night, the SSP (in-charge) said. Agarwal said the crime, which initially started as a harassment tactic, continued when the accused began monetising the content. "There was a subscription link to the adult content that he had posted, and people had to pay to access it. He earned about Rs 10 lakh through it. He kept on continuing the crime as he got greedy, though he had initiated it for harassing the woman," she said. The officer said multiple agencies will be involved in the investigation as digital evidence has to be examined, with the police seizing laptop, mobile phones, hard disk and other items from the accused. Agarwal also urged people to be careful while accessing online content and, have a closer look before circulating any information they receive on social media.
