The Mumbai rains have jeopardised BCCI's plans of announcing the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 today. With Mumbai on red alert, the BCCI meeting on the 4th floor looks bleak. In that case, the selection committee might join virtually among themselves to make the final call. If that's the case, there are two options for BCCI - announce the squad on social media or defer the Press Conference by a day or two.

More than Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal has a strong chance to make the cut. Based on a TOI report, Jaiswal's ability to go bang bang in the powerplay puts the left-hander ahead of Gill. Having said that, if at all Jaiswal makes the final squad, he will kept as a backup opener.

Amidst all the permutation and combinations, former India international Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Shivam Dube might miss out because of Shreyas Iyer. Although Dube played a key role in India's T20 World Cup win last year, but his recent scores might leave him out of the final squad. According to Ashwin, the only way for Dube to be in the squad is if BCCI chose not to select Iyer.

India are the most successful team in the Asia Cup with record eight titles. India's first Asia Cup title came in 1984 in the inaugural edition. They boycotted the 1986 edition before lifting three consecutive titles in 1988, 1990-91 and 1995. However, the Men in Blue waited for 15 long years for their next title in 2010. India's last three titles came in 2016, 2018 and 2023.
After India, Sri Lanka are the second-most successful team with six titles - 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, 2022. Pakistan have won the tournament twice in 2000 and 2012.

While the focus is on India's squad, the India vs Pakistan clash on September 14 has also made some noise in recent time with former cricketers Kedar Jadav and Harbhajan Singh asking the BCCI to boycott the clash in light of Operation Sindoor.

However, Rinku Singh is unlikely to be a part of the squad due to a poor show in IPL 2025. The southpaw scored just 206 runs in 13 games for KKR. In India colours, Rinku's last good innings came against Bangladesh last year. If at all, Rinku's finishing ability is counted, Hardik Pandya's ability to add up as an extra seamer might put Rinku in the backfoot.

If statistics are to be believed, the BCCI won't tinker with the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. While Samson smashed three hundreds last year, Sharma's 130 against England, the duo looks good to be continued till the T20 World Cup next year. In fact, the Sharma-Samson pair scored 908 runs at a strike rate of 157 since the last T20 World Cup. Samson, being the wicketkeeper also gives India a two-in-one advantage.

Besides Shubman Gill, another senior player knocking at BCCI's door is Shreyas Iyer. The middle-order batter has been tremendous with his batting in IPL 2025. Iyer's addition will also help the Indian team with leadership inputs having taken KKR and Punjab Kings to back to back finals.
19 Aug 2025, 10:09:38 AM IST
While most of the team looks set, there is a huge debate on Shubman Gill's inclusion in the squad. Will the Indian Test captain make a T20I comeback after a year? We will have to wait and watch.

'No Chance Of Winning T20 World Cup With...': Ex-IND Selector Slams Asia Cup Team

Last Updated: Kris Srikkanth has said India will fail to defend its T20 World Cup title next year with the team selected for Asia Cup 2025. Former India selector and batter Kris Srikkanth believes India has gone 'backwards' with their Asia Cup 2025 squad selection. Soon after the Ajit Agarkar-led committee announced the squad on Tuesday, he said even if this team wins the ACC tournament, it won't be good enough to defend the T20 World Cup crown next year. Srikkanth's major apprehension was with the selections of Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, and Harshit Rana. Rinku is the team's designated opener since his excellent showing in IPL 2023, while Dube and Rana got into the side with consistent performances in IPL 2024. But all three were out of form in the recent 2025 edition. Srikkanth also took exception to removing Axar Patel from the team's vice-captaincy for Shubman Gill, who hadn't played any T20 cricket since 2024. 'We might win the Asia Cup with this team, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch," Srikkanth said in a video on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda. 'Are you going to take this team to the World Cup? Is this the preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is hardly six months away? They have gone backwards. Axar Patel has been axed from vice-captaincy. I don't know how Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana have come in. IPL is considered the main criteria for selection, but the selectors seem to have considered performances before that." Srikkanth believes that the team lacks a natural number five. In the team's last T20, Dube batted at that spot and scored 30 off 13 with India putting up 247/9. 'Who will bat at No. 5? Five has to be either Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma or Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh. Hardik Pandya usually bats at No. 5, so now, Patel Axar cannot bat at six. I can't understand how they picked Dube. Yashasvi Jaiswal have performed in international cricket and IPL as well. What does he do?" Srikkant said. India's Asia Cup campaign begins on September 10 against the UAE. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Imran Khan wasn't talented ... used to shout at us': Wasim Akram spills the beans

Wasim Akram and Imran Khan NEW DELHI: Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram has opened up on what it was like to play under Imran Khan , calling the 1992 World Cup-winning skipper the greatest captain he ever played with. Akram, who began his international career in the mid-1980s, credited Imran for shaping him not only as a cricketer but also as a professional. Reflecting on his early days with Pakistan, Akram said much of his development came under Imran's guidance. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I think whatever I did as a cricketer, off the field, on the field, credit goes to him. He used to give us a lot of confidence. He led from the front. He had a belief in his own ability. He was a hardworking cricketer," Akram said on Stick to Cricket. While many considered Imran a naturally gifted player, Akram stressed that his success was built on relentless effort. "People used to say I'm very naturally talented. Skipper wasn't talented. He worked hard. Remember he changed his bowling action. From 76, exactly. Changing even a little bit of action can take months, it might not happen. But he did change his action. He was so determined," Akram said. Akram emphasised that Imran's determination and willingness to reinvent himself set an example for the entire team. His hard work, according to Akram, created a culture where no one could afford to be complacent. "I mean he was the best captain I played under. He used to give confidence to every one of us," Akram noted. Poll Who do you believe is the greatest cricket captain in history? Imran Khan Kapil Dev Steve Waugh Clive Lloyd At the same time, Imran was known to be tough on his players when required. Akram explained that the former skipper demanded full commitment on the field. "At times he used to shout at us because if you were lazy, fair enough. He was tough, but he was tough on the field. You give your 100%. If you don't do well, he was okay with it," he said. However, Imran could not tolerate players who tried to shield themselves in pressure situations. "If you're trying to save yourself and say okay, it's a pressure situation, I'll just take a back seat — he used to judge. He knew this particular player is just saving himself. So that used to annoy him a lot," Akram revealed. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Sunil Gavaskar Gives Blunt Verdict On Shubman Gill Becoming Vice-Captain For Asia Cup: "Cannot..."

Legendary Indian cricket team batter Sunil Gavaskar backed the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Amid raging debates over his spot in the squad, the BCCI showed huge support by making Gill the deputy to skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Gavaskar believes that it was a good decision considering Gill's stunning form in the Test series against England and added that this puts him on course to become India's all-format captain in the near future. 'He scored over 750 runs just a couple of weeks ago. You cannot exclude a player in that kind of form. Giving him the vice-captaincy is also a way of telling him that in the future, he could be leading the T20 side. I think it's a very, very good selection,' Gavaskar told India Today. 'He was very impressive in England as well. To score 750-plus runs while leading the side for the first time shows how well he handled pressure. This vice-captaincy is a clear sign that he is destined to lead India in the future,' he added. Gill played his last T20I in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, and his return to the shortest format hints at India's plans to unveil him as an all-format player after his leadership elevation on the England tour. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the side in the T20Is. The other notable inclusions in the squad were pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who both return to the T20I side after last year's T20 World Cup title in Barbados. Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the standbys for India's Asia Cup squad, said chief selector Ajit Agarkar in the press conference at BCCI headquarters. Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, and Rinku Singh have retained their place in the squad that featured in the five-match T20I series against England earlier this year. The eight-team Asia Cup T20I tournament will be staged in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 9 to 28. Defending champions India are placed in Group 'A' alongside Pakistan, Oman and the UAE. The Men in Blue will start their campaign against the UAE on September 10 before the blockbuster clash against archrivals Pakistan on September 14. India are scheduled to play 15 T20I games after the continental tournament in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February. India's squad for Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.
