In 'Survival of the Thickest,' queer joy and activism are one and the same

Yahoo29-03-2025

This week, Survival of the Thickest returns for its sophomore season on Netflix, and the show, which already felt like a much-needed and joyful escape, is even more poignant now.
For the unfamiliar, the series follows the exploits and experiences of Mavis Beaumont (as played by Michelle Buteau and based loosely on her book of essays), and her friends as they navigate both career challenges and (queer) romantic ones. Mavis has dreams of becoming both a famed stylist to the stars and of making the world — by way of the fashion industry — a more welcoming and accessible place for people with larger bodies (or, as she puts it, folks with oddy bodies and fatty baddies. Season two picks up with Mavis quickly finding herself single again but ready to pour herself into growing her brand, and creating more space and acceptance for everybody beginning with her own brick-and-mortar store.
Netflix
It's aspirational to be sure, but much has changed in the real world since season one made its way to Netflix in July 2023. So while the show is as funny and charming as ever, Mavis' quest to take on the system just hits a little different this time. And that's a very good thing.
It's not lost on Buteau who is excited to use her platform to elevate the voices and stories of marginalized people and is unapologetically an ally to the queer community. 'Everybody is our brother and sister — we're all family. So can we just do that?' she asks PRIDE.
She has high hopes that LGBTQ+ people will feel uplifted by this season which sees multiple queer love stories unfold.
Buteau says her desire is one that the queer audience knows. 'That' they are worthy and important and that they matter and that they should have happy endings and a community to go through stuff with.' For the actor, creator, and producer of the show, Buteau sees the show as, 'such a love letter to my friends and I always say the oddy bodies and fatty baddies in the queer community to be like we got this let's keep going. While I have this moment on this platform to do this show I'm gonna do what I can to make us shine, bitch.'
Netflix
While she is serious about her allyship, Buteau can't help but joke about the pleasures and pitfalls of bringing her love stories to the screen this season. Fresh off of a heartbreak, Mavis is ready to embrace her 'hoe' side in season two, which sees her set out on a spree of dates: some that go well and some that go hilariously wrong. But there's a method to all the madness, says Buteau.
'I had a lot more intimate scenes than I had in season one. I think trying to figure out how to tell that story in the most beautiful way, but also honest way, so it's like maybe less makeup because I think it's very important to tell women that they don't need a beat face in order to be loved or dicked down, or however you enjoy your sex,' she explains. Adding, 'But I'm not gonna lie… being on set having cooked meals for you all the time and then trying on a bunch of lingerie in between lunch, it's just like, 'What is this gonna be? That was a little challenging, but it was also really fun. It's also an honor, but it's also really hard not to fart on them sometimes.'
Netflix
That quote perfectly encapsulates the ethos and balancing act that Survival embodies. It's activism and humor, sexiness, and humanity all rolled into one utterly watchable series. Fart jokes? You bet, but it also presents a world that suggests what our real one could be if we just led with love and acceptance.
It's also why the inclusion of drag legend Peppermint, playing a version of herself, adds so much depth — and hope — to the proceedings. The drag superstar, broadway actress, and trans activist doesn't mince words when it comes to seeing how this show can serve as a powerful tool of empathy building in a time when we truly need it most.
Netflix
'In the day and age where we're hearing people who weren't elected to be very close to certain high offices in the country, talking about how empathy is the enemy and the death of this country, which is not true, but that is what has been said because they know that empathy is the one thing that will defend people against this type of dehumanization,' Peppermint tells PRIDE. 'You cannot dehumanize who you empathize with, and that is key.'
She continues. 'We need each other, and I can impact you, and you can impact me. It's inevitable, if we're sharing space, we will impact each other and improve on each other's lives,' she tells PRIDE. 'That's one of the things that Michelle and the writers do so well [in season two.]'
Netflix
Like the best of entertainment, Survival of the Thickest manages to do both things, entertain first and foremost, but it also invites us to open up our hearts to characters, some of whom are like us, some of us whose lived experiences are totally unlike ours and to love them both. That's not just a recipe for queer joy, it's one for survival.
Survival of the Thickest season two is streaming now on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.

Motor City Pride celebrates 53 years of uplifting LGBTQ+ community

Motor City Pride celebrated 53 years of LGBTQ+ community and revelry this weekend in downtown Detroit's Hart Plaza, bringing together people of every ethnicity and type from near and far to live their truths and honor those who made it possible. Jai Rodriguez, an Emmy-winning original cast member of reality show 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,' served as celebrity grand marshal during the annual parade along Griswold on Sunday afternoon. The parade attracted thousands of participants and spectators. Rodriguez, who spent 10 days in Detroit in 2011 for a guest role on ABC's 'Detroit 1-8-7,' spoke fondly of the Motor City and the importance of Pride. 'I grew up very Evangelical,' he said. 'No TV, no secular music. I didn't have any access or knowledge of what it was like to be authentically myself in the late 1990s. The internet was new and for rich people, in my mind, and so I really had to rely on family of choice. Five years later, I got this massive TV show, 'Queer Eye,' and a lot of folks forget that we weren't always welcomed in every space. In season one, a lot of major brands didn't want to work with us because we had the word 'queer' in our title. 'But I had this crazy experience of the world celebrating us at large. We had no social media at that time, so what we saw was a lot of positivity, especially from conservative folks who thoroughly enjoyed our program – they just didn't think it was OK for us to marry. Difficult conversations launched during the first Trump presidency, and we saw a lot of rhetoric build against the community. I think we all got really comfortable during the Obama presidency, when the White House was lit up rainbow and we had marriage equality. It seemed like the fight had been won, but there's still so much more to do.' Rodriguez said the only grooming he experienced as a child was through the church drilling into him how to be 'a good, straight, Christian man.' 'Queer people have never been a threat,' he said. 'We are not innately dangerous. We are just as magical and just as flawed as anyone else.' Attendees of all ages beamed from ear to ear when asked about their experience at the festival. More: How a flag on a pole became a turning point for Hamtramck Opinion: I'm a gay man in Detroit. Celebrating Pride feels more important than ever. 'It's been nice,' said Mandy Ware, an African American senior citizen using a walker who only described her age as 'much older than I look.' 'It's been nice just being with people that are friendly, and just being themselves, and not judging.' Young couple Stephanie Roberson and Tyler Danielak called the experience 'fantastic.' 'Everyone's been so great, so welcoming, so expressive,' said Danielak, 'and it's so nice to see everyone from different walks of life and different experiences and cultures. You've got furries, you've got the gay community, just everyone coming together.' The pair took advantage of free 'chosen family' portraits that were offered at the Rocket Mortgage booth. Rocket Companies creative director Joy Crocker talked about why it was important for the company to present a chosen family photo op this year. 'At Rocket,' she said, 'our mission is to help everyone home, and that means everyone − all of our communities, including the LGBTQ+ community. Last year, here at Pride, we asked the community what means home to them, and we … learned that home is belonging. It's acceptance, and ultimately, chosen family, the people who support you for all the parts of you. And we know chosen family is particularly important for this community, because blood family doesn't always show up. 'However, chosen family is something everyone can relate to, not just this community, and we think that's beautiful. So this is our way of showing up and letting the community know that we believe it deserves the same amount of respect and honor and documentation as blood family. It's so common that we'll see family portraits hanging in someone's home, but you don't always see chosen family portraits, even though that feeling is exactly the same.' JP, aged 76, is one of the founders of Motor City Pride. 'I know where I have instant family,' he said. 'This marks my 58 years in the life. I've been out since 1967, and in 1972, I was part of the group that built this. It's been a pleasure to watch it grow.' Quinn Jacob and Rachel Paulin are a young couple who are cast members in Ferndale's Ringwald Theatre's all-adult production of 'Annie,' currently running through June 30. The musical's theme of finding chosen family after great hardship hits particularly close to home during Pride Month. 'It's very humbling and inspiring,' said Jacob, 'to revisit our ancestors and the people who made all of this possible today, and every Pride Month. It's very moving to see where we came from and then where we are today.' Metro Detroit transgender advocacy nonprofit Stand With Trans also had a booth at the event, manned by board member John Davis-Piotrowski. 'Visibility is the biggest thing, I think, 'he said. 'Being able to be part of not only the trans community, but the LGBTQ community allies' families. That's something Stand With Trans has always been about – making sure that we're on that journey, both for trans members, but also their families and, again, allies, any supporters of the trans community. Just being out here and being able to see all of the community members who want to come up and talk about the services we've helped them with, or showing them that they're able to refer their families to us … that's the biggest reason we're out here.' Trans attendees Jill, Suzumebachi and Kelly, all of whom stopped by the Stand With Trans booth, spoke about the event's importance. All three said they moved to Detroit in the last few years from red states seeking safety. 'To me," said Suzumebachi, "Pride means casting off the shackles of Christo-fascist white supremacy and colonialism.' 'We're still here, no matter what's happening outside,' said Kelly. Suzumebachi cited ancient historical research. 'We're a demographic humanity,' she said. 'People who are queer have existed for thousands of years. You know, there are records of us going back to Sumeria, and they've been trying to eradicate those for the last millennium or so, unsuccessfully, and so we're just proving that point again and again.' Rodriguez summed it up by recognizing the origins of Pride events nationwide. 'Pride started as a protest,' he said, 'a gathering of individuals who were sick of sitting on the sidelines not having equal rights. Today, the spirit of our LGBTQIA+ ancestors were very much with us. We are reminded we can recharge our emotional batteries, find community and protest injustice at every Pride we attend. 'All while doing it fabulously.' This article originally appeared on Detroit Free Press: Motor City Pride celebrates 53 years of uplifting LGBTQ+ community

‘Not just a party:' World Pride celebrations end with defiant politics on display

After the raucous rainbow-hued festivities of Saturday's parade, the final day of World Pride 2025 in the nation's capital kicked off on a more downbeat note. Thousands gathered under gray skies Sunday morning at the Lincoln Memorial for a rally and protest march, as the community gathers its strength for a looming fight under President Donald Trump's second administration. 'This is not just a party,' Ashley Smith, board president of Capital Pride Alliance. 'This is a rally for our lives.' Smith acknowledged that international attendance numbers for the bi-annual World Pride were measurably down, with many potential attendees avoiding travel to the U.S. due to either fear of harassment or in protest of Trump's policies. 'That should disturb us and mobilize us,' Smith said. Protesters cheered on LGBTQ+ activists taking the stage while waving both traditional Pride flags and flags representing transgender, bisexual, intersex and other communities. Many had rainbow glitter and rhinestones adorning their faces. They held signs declaring 'Fight back,' 'Gay is good,' 'Ban bombs not bathrooms' and 'We will not be erased.' Trump's campaign against transgender protections and oft-stated antipathy for drag shows have set the community on edge, with some hoping to see a renewed wave of street politics in response. 'Trans people just want to be loved. Everybody wants to live their own lives and I don't understand the problem with it all,' said Tyler Cargill, who came wearing an elaborate costume with a hat topped by a replica of the U.S. Capitol building. Wes Kincaid drove roughly 6 hours from Charlotte, North Carolina to attend this year. Sitting on a park bench near the reflecting pond, Kincaid said he made a point of attending this year, 'because it's more important than ever to show up for our community.' Reminders of the cuts to federal government programs were on full display, Sunday. One attendee waved a pole bearing a massive rainbow flag along with a large USAID flag; another held a 'Proud gay federal worker' sign; and a third held an umbrella with the logos of various federal program facing cuts — including the PBS logo. Trump's anti-trans rhetoric had fueled fears of violence or protests targeting World Pride participants; at one point earlier this spring, rumors circulated that the Proud Boys were planning to disrupt this weekend's celebrations. Those concerns prompted organizers to install security fencing around the entire two-day street party on a multi-block stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue. But so far, the only clear act of aggression has been the vandalizing of a queer bar last week. Late Saturday night, there was a pair of violent incidents near Dupont Circle — one of the epicenters of the World Pride celebrations. Two juveniles were stabbed and a man was shot in the foot in separate incidents. The Metropolitan Police Department says it is not clear if either incident was directly related to World Pride. A cold rain began falling around noon Sunday as the rally speakers cut short their comments and prepared to march. Some attendees filtered away while others huddled under umbrellas and ponchos. 'Rain will not stop us, and after rain comes rainbows,' said one speaker from the stage. The speeches didn't just target the Trump administration or the Republican Party. Some turned their ire on Democratic politicians, who they say have wilted under the pressure of Republican control of the White House and both houses of Congress. 'We have to call out people who have abandoned our movement,' said Tyler Hack of the Christopher Street Project. 'Being a Democrat is more than carrying the party affiliation,' Hack added. 'It's about unapologetic support for the trans community.' While the main march headed toward the U.S. Capitol, a separate group splintered off and headed toward the White House, unfurling a large 'TRUMP MUST GO NOW' banner. Those who stayed to brave the weather said their presence amid less-than-ideal circumstances was vital. 'People are still out here, despite the rain, despite their exhaustion,' said Gillian Brewer, a university student studying physics from Silver Spring, Maryland. 'We're not going anywhere.' Brewer expressed some frustration that the turnout for Sunday's protest march was lower than for the World Pride parade the day before, which she decided to skip. 'This is more important,' Brewer added. 'You can party all you want but at the end of the day, the protest is why we can party.' Natalie Farmer, who traveled from San Diego with her wife, attributed the difference in numbers between the march and Saturday's parade to people being tired from celebrating the previous night. 'Some of us have to do the rallying to keep the party going,' Farmer said. 'We all fight in different ways.'
