Skewed Priorities? Pakistan May Hike Defence Spending Budget By 18% Amid Record Debt Levels
Last Updated: The proposed increase in military spending suggests that national security concerns continue to trump economic realities in Pakistan's policy-making corridors In a stark display of misplaced priorities, Pakistan is reportedly planning to hike its defence spending by nearly 18 per cent in its budget that is set to be presented on Tuesday. The proposed increase would push Pakistan's defence budget to Rs 2,500 billion, further solidifying its focus on military expenditure at a time when its economy is struggling under the weight of an unprecedented debt burden. The country's economic health has been a growing concern. According to the latest Economic Survey, Pakistan's public debt has reached a record high of Rs 76,007 billion, a figure that has nearly doubled over the past four years. Just five years ago, Pakistan's debt stood at Rs 39,860 billion. To put this into perspective, a decade ago, Pakistan's public debt was a mere Rs 17,380 billion—indicating an almost five-fold increase in the past 10 years. The surge in debt is not limited to external borrowing. Domestic debt now stands at Rs 51,518 billion, while external debt accounts for Rs 24,489 billion. The Economic Survey warns that such a massive increase in debt could lead to serious economic vulnerabilities, including rising interest burdens that might cripple the country's fiscal sustainability. The survey also highlights that if left unaddressed, Pakistan could face long-term economic instability, affecting everything from social welfare to infrastructure development. World Bank figures reveal the stark reality. While India has lifted 171 million people from extreme poverty in the decade between 2011-12 and 2022-23, 1.9 million additional people fell into poverty in 2024-25 in Pakistan. The World Bank report on Pakistan in April said the country's 2.6 per cent economic growth 'remains insufficient to reduce poverty". The poverty rate is estimated to stand at 42.4 per cent (US$3.65/day 2017 PPP) in FY25 in Pakistan, 'virtually unchanged from last year", the report said. In a country where inflation is soaring, unemployment is high, and public services are underfunded, many question whether this continued emphasis on military spending is sustainable or responsible. With an economy teetering on the brink, Pakistan's fiscal mismanagement could risk further plunging the country into economic turmoil. As Pakistan's defence budget continues to rise, the population remains increasingly burdened by inflation, poverty, and a government that seems reluctant to make the tough decisions necessary for long-term economic recovery. The Section 80C of the Income Tax Act allows tax deduction of up to Rs 1.5 lakh in a financial year on investments in a few specified instruments. If you are trying to save taxes in this financial year, you can consider investing in tax-saving mutual funds or ELSSs. Tax saving mutual funds or ELSSs invest in stocks. Therefore, they have a very high risk. You should be aware of this aspect, especially if you are a first-time investor in equity mutual funds. Compared to your usual investments like Public Provident Fund or National Savings Certificate, etc, ELSSs do not offer guaranteed returns. You may even suffer losses in a bad market. So, why should you invest in ELSSs? One, these schemes have the potential to offer higher returns over a long period. As you know, tax saving schemes invest in stocks. And stocks typically offer higher returns over a long period of time. For example, the ELSS category offered an average return of around 11.89% over 10 years. Live Events Two, ELSS funds have the shortest lock-in period of three years among tax saving investments. Most other investment options under the 80C basket are government-backed investments. They typically come with longer lock-in periods. For example, PPF is a 15-year product that allows partial withdrawals after six years. The NSC is a five-year product. So, if you want access to your money in three years, you should invest in ELSSs. But don't count on it to offer you great returns in three years. You should always keep in mind that equity investing is for the long term. You should invest in equity mutual funds only if you have an investment horizon of five to seven years. And the third and the most important point to remember is that ELSSs is an entry point for many investors into investing in stocks. Many investors often start with ELSSs and the mandatory lock-in period of three years in these schemes helps them to weather the volatility in the stock market. Once these investors see the rewards coming in, say, five or seven years, they start investing more money in equity schemes. Also Read | 3 equity mutual fund categories lose up to 7% in 2025. Mean rolling returns: Rolled daily for the last three years. 2. Consistency in the last three years: Hurst Exponent, H is used for computing the consistency of a fund. The H exponent is a measure of randomness of NAV series of a fund. Funds with high H tend to exhibit low volatility compared to funds with low H. i) When H = 0.5, the series of returns is said to be a geometric Brownian time series. This type of time series is difficult to forecast. ii) When H is less than 0.5, the series is said to be mean reverting. iii) When H is greater than 0.5, the series is said to be persistent. The larger the value of H, the stronger is the trend of the series 3. Downside risk: We have considered only the negative returns given by the mutual fund scheme for this measure. X =Returns below zero Y = Sum of all squares of X Z = Y/number of days taken for computing the ratio Downside risk = Square root of Z 4. Outperformance: It is measured by Jensen's Alpha for the last three years. Jensen's Alpha shows the risk-adjusted return generated by a mutual fund scheme relative to the expected market return predicted by the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Higher Alpha indicates that the portfolio performance has outstripped the returns predicted by the market. Average returns generated by the MF Scheme = [Risk Free Rate + Beta of the MF Scheme * {(Average return of the index - Risk Free Rate} 5. Asset size: For Equity funds, the threshold asset size is Rs 50 crore

‘Pure Indian jugaad': How a Mumbai auto driver earns Rs 5–8 lakh per month without driving? Harsh Goenka reacts to viral post
In a surprising incident, Bengaluru-based billionaire Harsh Goenka reacted to a viral claim by an entrepreneur about an auto driver's earning between Rs 5 and Rs 8 lakh each month without even driving his vehicle. The post is now doing the rounds on social media. The post was first shared by Rahul Rupani, the co-founder of VenueMonk, who claimed that the driver earned the money by offering to keep the luggage for those visiting the US Consulate in Mumbai. Noticing the post on the internet, Goenka reacted to the same and called the hustle a 'pure Indian jugaad.' How did the auto driver earn Rs 5 and Rs 8 lakhs without doing any work? According to the viral LinkedIn post shared by Rupani earlier, he stated that he was outside the US Consulate this week for his visa appointment when the security personnel informed him that he was not allowed to carry his bag inside. Additionally, there were no lockers or suggestions. The guard just told them to 'figure it out.' While he was standing there clueless and on the footpath, he noticed an auto driver who waved at him and said, 'Sir, bag de do. Safe rakhunga, mera roz ka hai. ₹1,000 charge hai.' (Sir, give me the bag; I will keep it safe, and I only charge Rs 1,000.) I hesitated. Then gave in. And that's when I discovered this guy's brilliant business," he added. 'No-bag rule,' what a genius idea, says Harsh Goenka Noticing Rupani's post on LinkedIn, Goenka couldn't stop himself from reacting to the same; he called it a genius idea and wrote, 'A Mumbai rickshaw driver saw long visa queues at the US consulate—the no-phone, no-bag rule—and had a genius idea. He started charging ₹1,000 to hold people's bags outside the US Consulate." Goenka called it a pure 'Indian Jugaad.' He further noted that Ashok, the auto driver, earns Rs 8 lakh a month just by offering a 'bag-holding' service, and no app was involved in this, no MBA; it is just 'Pure Indian Jugaad.' The entrepreneur also added a picture of the driver in the X (formerly called Twitter) post. A Mumbai rickshaw driver saw long visa queues at US consulate- the no-phone, no-bag rule- and had a genius started charging ₹1,000 to hold people's bags outside the US Consulate. Today, Ashok earns ₹8 lakh a month just by offering 'bag-holding' app. No… Netizens react to the viral post of Harsh Goenka As soon as the post surfaced on X, it grabbed the attention of netizens and received a mixed bag of reactions. One said, "How come no competition for him yet? A vanity van offering lounge-kind of services along with baggage-holding service will be the next level." how come no competition for him yet? a vanity van offering lounge kind of services along with baggage holding service will be the next level. "Real innovation doesn't always need funding or fancy tools. It needs awareness, courage, and execution. Ashok did all three," another added.
