Call of Duty won't introduce paid LTMs, but its in-game purchases need a fix

Daily Mirror16-05-2025

Call of Duty had a close call with a leak that indicated a major change for its Battle Passes – and even though it's false, its in-game purchases-forward attitude is still present in the franchise now, and getting worse by the day.
Call of Duty 'leaks' claimed that paywalled LTMs were on the way to the series' next game, and though they have been debunked, the fact that we all believed it at all is telling of the current state of the franchise.
Call of Duty looks to be in a sticky situation right now. As is often the case for this period in the franchise's annual games' life cycle, players are starting to drop away from Black Ops 6 in favour of more interesting things, and it is fighting to rope players back into its gameplay. But Season 3 Reloaded simply isn't cutting it, even with Verdansk keeping Warzone players interested.

Of course, the new portion of the season is attempting to please the stoners in its crowd, with the arrival of Seth Rogen and a number of other themed skins to keep the smokers in the lobby happy, but after that, there's little else for other players with dull LTMs and minor additions that don't really make the game feel 'reloaded' in any meaningful way. Plus, after the season itself was delayed, it's starting to feel as though the extra time that the team took didn't amount to much.

This could indicate that the game might have crossed the Rubicon when it comes to collecting new players before the new title, and as we're beginning to see, that may not be particularly far away, as leaks and rumours are beginning to appear for Call of Duty 2025, set to take over Warzone and swipe the main-game baton from Black Ops 6. And one leak, despite the fact that it has now been debunked, indicates that we expect so very little of it.
Call of Duty LTM leaks ended up being false
A leak reared its head concerning the incoming Call of Duty 2025 title, and though it failed to earn any validity, the very fact that so many players believed it is more than enough to determine that something has to change in the franchise. According to reputable Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope on Twitter, some major changes were set to come to the Battle Pass of Call of Duty 2025 (currently rumoured to be another Black Ops game) that would put 'higher value' limited-time modes behind the paywall of the Battle Pass itself.
This new system would add value to the Battle Pass, as crossovers with Premium Event Tracks would come under the Battle Pass and dish out items to players with one payment per season, but it would also lock many LTMs behind the Battle Pass, unlike the current system that allows players to enjoy the smaller modes that come with each event, injecting minor differences to existing gamemodes. This was a pretty shocking twist to be trusted, especially as in many cases, players simply don't engage with LTMs in any major way, tending to play through them once and cast them aside. Thankfully, though, it isn't happening, according to Call of Duty Twitter account CharlieIntel, who added to their own post in a tweet about the change to state that they had been told it was entirely false.
...but we believed it
The biggest issue at hand here is that players have been concerned about the direction of Activision's teams for some time, worried that they were going to chase microtransactions so far down the rabbit hole that they forgot that players were paying AAA prices to access mainline Call of Duty titles in the first place, and this seemed entirely within the remit of the company's current attempts to make an extra buck. These microtransactions add a little more to the company's pockets, but in many ways, they erode the players' trust in the game that it is offering them the best experience after shelling out so much in the first place. This revelation would have proven even further that Call of Duty isn't willing to offer players much if they just want to spend £70 upfront – but the company's track record with LTMs proves that they can be a little thoughtless in design, too.
When the TMNT collaboration came to Black Ops 6 in Season 2 Reloaded, Call of Duty revealed that playing Cowabunga Cranked, the themed LTM for Zombies mode, you would recieve a bonus 50% reduction to damage taken from behind if you wore a paid TMNT Turtle skin for the duration of the game, literally applying a pay-to-win feature to the mode. Though there is little competitive about the mode apart from the chance to earn a (barely) different Calling Card for completing a map's Easter egg, it's still a flagrant misunderstanding of the applications of cosmetic items, and a careless addition to an LTM that proved that extra CoD Point purchases take precedent over developing a balanced, fair mode.
LTMs and in-game purchases already clearly have a rocky relationship, so this suggestion that new modes could become exclusive to those with a Battle Pass is punishingly and depressingly easy to believe. Though this isn't a feature that is likely to appear, it's clear that the game pressuring players to purchase a BlackCell Battle Pass (which, as a bonus, means that players don't even have access to all of the things they want when they buy a standard Battle Pass), sending them plunging through the item shop to unlock free double XP tokens and cramming licensed event passes into the title as often as possible is alienating players.
Perhaps things really were simpler back in the DLC pack days, offering players four new maps and a new Zombies experience for a lump sum. Though it was more money for players to spend, it at least felt more honest than the current system, that seems to make an attempt to coerce players rather than market to them. We might be free of paid LTMs now, but the path that Activision is on implies they could rear their head in the future. It's a bleak implication, but it wouldn't be particularly hard to believe. There are only so many Seth Rogens we can take, but that won't matter, so long as players keep buying them.

Black Ops 6 players threaten to quit over new microtransaction ads

A new addition to the weapon loadout screen in Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 has caused outrage amongst players, as season four gets underway. Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 added a bunch of multiplayer maps, modes, weapons, and gameplay tweaks last week, as part of its fourth season, but one particular change has sparked anger amongst players. After the season four update rolled out on Thursday, May 29, Call Of Duty players have noticed an advertisement promoting premium weapons and skins in the weapon select menu which wasn't there before. While the Call Of Duty launcher often carries these kinds of promotions, players are miffed they've crossed over into the gameplay itself – especially as Black Ops 6 players have already forked out £69.99 for the full game. 'One of the unwelcome changes I've noticed with season four is that they've now inserted a new ad spot at the top of the list of your weapon specific builds,' Reddit user whambampl writes. 'So now every time you toggle between weapon builds you get to stare at ads for $20-$30 skins. I'm sure the Activision developer who suggested this terrible feature is very proud of themselves.' They added: 'This change is especially unneeded because you could already toggle from Builds to Shop on any given weapon and apparently not being thrown directly in our faces didn't make them enough money. Many of us paid $60-$100 for a feature game and don't want to be bombarded with additional ads.' Season 4 brings new ad spot in game for weapons byu/whambampl inblackops6 In a nod to SpongeBob SquarePants, one user replied: 'Actively witnessing Call Of Duty become the Krusty Krab.' Other players have vowed to quit playing following this update. 'This ad mess is ridiculous,' one user wrote. 'They make huge bank already for them to even do this should be illegal. I've never been done with a COD this fast ever. But she's getting deleted.' More Trending Another added: 'I'm so dumbfounded… this seriously makes me want to uninstall based on principle alone! You guys have to be smoking something.' This issue has been the subject of several threads expressing a similar sentiment. 'I wouldn't even be mad if this was just in Warzone, a free game, but putting it in a pay-to-play premium title, with how expensive they're getting?' questioned one commenter. Last month, a report highlighted how Call Of Duty was slowly losing players each year. As of March 2025, Call Of Duty had 20.6 million players, a decline from 20.8 million in March 2024 and 22.4 million in March 2023. While these are still huge numbers, it's perhaps a sign that Call Of Duty's dominance could be at risk if a competitor makes a big enough splash. EA is hoping to do just that with the next Battlefield, which is set to launch sometime before March 2026. Why is a pro-Israel group asking the US to investigate Ms Rachel?

If you believe that babies can tell when a person is truly good, then it should be no surprise that Ms Rachel – the beloved kids YouTube sensation – has remained on the right side of every socio-political debate since the image of her pink tee and denim dungarees became ubiquitous in households with children across the world. But when Ms Rachel, whose given name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, began speaking out about the genocide in Gaza, pro-Israel rightwingers put a massive target on her back. Accurso first made her stance public around May 2024, when she announced a fundraiser for children in Gaza and other war zones. Since then, she's consistently drawn attention to the tragedy in Palestine by sharing statistics on the crisis along with images of Palestinian children to her social media audience of tens of millions of followers, and the right has been after her since. Back in March, the New York Post ran an article about Accurso calling her a 'Woke brainwasher' and warning parents against the influence they were allowing into their homes. Then, last month, the pro-Israel group StopAntisemitism asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether Ms Rachel was operating as a foreign agent because of her posts about Gazan children. In an open letter to the US attorney general, Pam Bondi, they asked authorities to find out whether Accurso was 'being remunerated to disseminate Hamas-aligned propaganda to her millions of followers'. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of children have been killed or injured in Gaza since Israel began its onslaught in retaliation for Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack – and Israel isn't letting up, even as children face starvation. Last Saturday, Israeli airstrikes killed nine of a Gaza doctor's 10 children while she worked. If speaking up about a genocide makes you a foreign agent, what does that say about America's own values? 'I care deeply for all children. Palestinian children, Israeli children, children in the US – Muslim, Jewish, Christian children – all children, in every country,' Accurso said through tears on Instagram video from May of 2024. 'To do a fundraiser for children who are currently starving, who have no food or water, who are being killed, is human.' For this kind of thing – caring about innocent children – to be controversial is a clear sign of just how far we've strayed from our moral core as a society, and a reminder of the inhumanity that pervades this political moment. One of the distinct markers of pro-Israel rhetoric in recent times has been the way it intentionally and violently rejects the idea of children being vulnerable and innocent. Israel's supporters feel emboldened to cast babies as collateral damage at best, and 'enemies' at their most truly unhinged. And the pro-Israel crowd is angry at Accurso because in a war that does not want us to see them as such, she constantly reminds us that Palestinian children are people, and are deserving of the same kind of care and protection that the west gives its young. Her love for children has also made her an easy target for conservatives who like to label LGBTQ+ people and their allies as creeps and pedophiles looking to groom children. Last year, when Accurso shared a video celebrating Pride month on her Instagram and TikTok accounts (which are geared toward her adult supporters, of course), rightwing influencers called her 'sick' and complained that she was exposing children to 'things they shouldn't be exposed to'. For me, Accurso's speaking out also shines a harsh light on the absolute dearth of outrage from other far more powerful and influential celebrities. This month, more than 300 celebrities and Hollywood figures signed an open letter condemning the industry's silence on the genocide. This belated effort falls flat when you consider how people with much less power and way more to lose have risked their livelihoods and safety to speak up for what is right. Overall, though, the hatred for Accurso isn't just about Gaza. As a public figure, she is an indictment of everything that rightwingers want us to believe is bad. She's all about big feelings, standing up for vulnerable people, making people from all walks of life feel included, and celebrating what makes us different. Of course the right hates that. Figures like Accurso are an aberration in a world where bad news generates the most clicks and we are all supposed to be desensitized to the ways vulnerable people continue to have their lives, and the few protections they have left, snatched away from them.
