
Tangedco AE held on graft charge in Virudhunagar
A team of sleuths of Virudhunagar district unit of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, led by its Additional Superintendent of Police K. Ramachandran, and Inspectors R. Boominathan and Jasmine Mumtaz, laid a trap and arrested the accused.
According to DVAC sources, the house-owner had sought to shift the electricity connection with the Assistant Engineer of Tangedco, Virudhunagar, Rural North. He had reportedly demanded ₹35,000 to sanction the work.
Unwilling to give the bribe money, the woman had lodged a complaint with the DVAC following which the sleuths laid a trap and caught him while he accepted the money at the woman's house in the afternoon.

Court raps vigilance, DySP for favouring Ajith Kumar
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vigilance Special Court in Thiruvananthapuram tore into the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) and DySP Shibu Pappachan who inquired into corruption allegations against M R Ajith Kumar, the excise commissioner, for allegedly favouring him. The court also turned down the probe report noting that 'the so-called enquiry was initiated for name's sake, intended to save him from the clutches of the law.' Judge Manoj A issued the order on a petition filed by activist and lawyer Neyyattinkara P Nagaraj seeking dismissal of the vigilance report that favoured Ajith. The judge wrote that the 'enquiry officer' (Shibu), 'contrary to guidelines, prepared a report favouring the suspected officer to exonerate him.' The court said the officer did not follow the Vigilance Manual mandate, particularly since an allegation was raised on amassing wealth, disproportionate assets and constructing a house for crores of rupees.

Villupuram Collector holds meeting with organisers of Vinayaka Chathurthi festival
The Villupuram Collector, Sheik Abdul Rahman, has instructed organisers of Vinayaka Chathurthi festival not to install statues that measure more than 10 feet from the ground level. He was speaking at a law and order review meeting on Tuesday convened ahead of Vinayaka Chaturthi, which falls on August 27. The meeting was attended by Superintendent of Police P. Saravanan. The Collector said that those installing idols should have obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the respective tahsildars. If the site where the idols are to be installed is situated on a private land, the NOC should be obtained from land owners and if the site happens to be on a poromboke land, the NOCs would have to be obtained from the concerned department or the local body. The organisers should be aware that a NOC should be obtained from the police for use of public address system and a certificate from the Fire and Rescue Services should certify that adequate fire prevention measures have been put in place and an acknowledgement should be obtained from the Tangedco. Idols should be made of clay and no plaster of paris and other chemical substances should be used. Water soluble paints should be used and chemical paints were not allowed. Idols should not be installed in places that are closer to other places of worship, hospitals and educational institutions. Cone-type speakers are prohibited and only box-type speakers can be used. Organisers should ensure optimum lighting and fire and rescue services personnel should ensure that fire prevention measures are in place. Flowers, cloths, decorative items and plastic should be removed from the idol before immersion, the Collector added.

Telangana high court denies official's appeal for call data records & diary entries in corruption case
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court recently dismissed an appeal filed by a govt employee facing corruption charges. He sought call data records of the complainant in the case and also copies of the entries from the general diary of the office of superintendent of police, ACB Ranga Reddy Range. The accused official, who was was booked on corruption charges in 2019, requested the records under the RTI Act. A division bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice P Sam Koshy observed that the information sought by the accused official could impede prosecution or threaten witnesses and, therefore, cannot be provided under the RTI Act. The official claimed he sought the records to defend himself before the concerned trial court. Moreover, since a charge sheet was filed, there was no scope for further investigation. Initially, he requested information from the public information office of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The HC, after examining his argument and that of the govt counsel, upheld the PIO's response of denying the information and the subsequent responses to the first and second appeals. When he challenged the same before the division bench, the bench ruled that the accused could not seek the requested information under the RTI Act, as it was exempt under Section 8(1)(h). "Such investigation material, meant to be used against the accused, can only be obtained under Section 207 of the CrPC through the trial court at the appropriate stage," ruled the bench.
