5G subscriptions expected to reach 2.9bil people by end-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly one-third of all mobile users, or about 2.9 billion people, are expected to be on the fifth-generation wireless cellular technology (5G) by the end of 2025, according to telecommunication and technology company Ericsson.
In its June 2025 Ericsson Mobility Report, the company noted that 5G networks accounted for 35 per cent of global mobile traffic by the end of 2024, with forecasts indicating that this figure will exceed 80 per cent by 2030.
In the Southeast Asia and Oceania region, the report said 5G subscriptions are projected to reach around 630 million in 2030, contributing around 49 per cent of total mobile subscriptions in the region.
Data traffic per smartphone is expected to rise from 19 gigabytes (GB) per month in 2024 to 38 GB per month by 2030.
Meanwhile, the report noted that the number of 4G subscriptions continues to decline globally as users migrate to 5G, with a drop of 55 million in the first quarter of 2025, bringing the total to just below 4.9 billion.
Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh head David Hägerbro said Digital Nasional Bhd's intelligent, future-proof network forms the backbone of Malaysia's 5G-driven growth and digital transformation.
"It is vital that the momentum continues to grow. Malaysia already has a head start in becoming the leading digital economy in ASEAN and must ensure that its 5G digital infrastructure remains open to an ecosystem that is conducive to global investments and innovation," he said.
The report also stated that 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is expected to make up more than 35 per cent of new global connections, with the number of connections projected to reach 350 million by 2030-more than double the current figure.
5G FWA plays a crucial role in expanding broadband access, particularly in areas where traditional wired infrastructure is less feasible, as it enables rapid deployment by leveraging existing mobile infrastructure that already covers 90 per cent of the world's population.
"The mix of fibre, 5G FWA and satellite technologies will be crucial in meeting the connectivity needs of an increasingly digital world as we approach 2030," the report said.
Since its launch in 2011, the Ericsson Mobility Report has served as a key industry reference for network data, performance, statistics, and forecasts. - Bernama

Gobind: 13MP Highlights Technology, AI To Boost Malaysia's Digital Transformation

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) clearly emphasises technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in line with the government's push to accelerate the country's digital transformation, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. He said one of the key priorities highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the development of the AI Nation Framework, which aims to fully leverage the country's 5G network to create digital solutions, including smart city initiatives using existing data. 'The 13MP also emphasises 'data commission'. The Prime Minister has made it clear that the concept of a data bank is closely linked to digital trust, among other related areas. 'These are steps that we see as supporting the aspiration to achieve AI nation status in the near future,' Gobind told reporters after launching the 5G Enterprise and AI City Grant today. He said this initiative will be featured at the upcoming Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL25), scheduled for Sept 17–19, which will serve as a platform to showcase Malaysia's smart city transformation and foster collaboration among city leaders, innovators, and digital solution providers. Leveraging world-class 5G connectivity, the minister said Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have been tasked with leading the AI Cities initiative, which builds upon and complements the Smart Cities programme under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. 'I hope these efforts have — and will continue to — lay the groundwork for real, actionable innovation. By aligning strategic leadership with on-the-ground execution, we have seen how national initiatives can translate into meaningful local impact. 'The grants awarded today are a direct outcome of this alignment — where policy meets purpose, and vision meets implementation,' the minister said. The grant was awarded to 14 recipients, comprising universities, companies, and local authorities.

Fahmi: Malaysia's internet coverage hits almost 99pc, 5G reaches 82pc in populated areas

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said internet and communications coverage in Malaysia's populated areas has reached 98.82 per cent. For 5G services, he said Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has completed 7,489 transmitter sites, delivering 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas nationwide. 'As of July 31, internet and communications coverage in populated areas across Malaysia stood at 98.82 per cent, while in the Tanjung Karang constituency it was 99.75 per cent,' he told Dewan Rakyat. Fahmi was replying to Tanjung Karang MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi, who had asked for updates and data on the progress of the 5G project, particularly within the constituency. He said the expansion of 5G coverage to rural areas, including Tanjung Karang, will be carried out in stages based on needs and infrastructure readiness. The minister said the second 5G network, operated by U Mobile, was launched on July 14 following progress discussions with MCMC, with 1,232 sites upgraded and 17 more planned in Tanjung Karang. 'As of July 31, 5G mobile broadband penetration stood at 82.7 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, with over 28 million internet accounts using 5G services,' he added. Fahmi said the rollout of Jendela Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, while plans for Phase 2 are under review and will be announced by MCMC in the fourth quarter of 2025. The review includes assessing suitable service delivery methods and the capacity of the Universal Service Provision Fund (USP Fund) to finance capital and operational expenditures. He said project locations are also being identified, with possible solutions including building new towers and providing internet via satellite.
