US Open 2025: Matteo Berrettini pulls out of tournament due to injury

India Todaya day ago
Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has officially withdrawn from the 2025 US Open due to ongoing injury concerns. The 29-year-old, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2021, has struggled with fitness issues throughout the year. He has not competed since his first-round loss to Kamil Majchrzak at Wimbledon in June and missed both the Toronto and Cincinnati tournaments in preparation for the US Open.advertisementIn another update before the hard-court major, American player Brandon Holt, who had previously received a main draw wild card, will be replaced by Eliot Spizzirri. Spizzirri, a standout from the University of Texas, is next in line to assume Holt's wild card entry.
In addition to Berrettini's withdrawal, two other prominent players have also pulled out of the tournament. Bulgarian veteran Grigor Dimitrov, who had a remarkable streak of 58 consecutive major appearances, will miss the US Open due to a pectoral injury sustained during his match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon. Paula Badosa's heartbreaking message
Meanwhile, Spanish player Paula Badosa has withdrawn due to a chronic lower back injury, which has sidelined her since her first-round exit at Wimbledon.'I wasn't built by easy days. I was shaped by the moments that broke me, the choices that didn't go as planned, and the times I fell short of who I wanted to be. My setbacks weren't signs that I was weak; they were necessary chapters in a story that's still being written.''Failure taught me what success never could. It humbled me. It forced me to look inward, to ask hard questions, to rebuild with more intention and clarity. Every mistake I made sharpened my understanding of who I am and who I'm not. And while I once feared those mistakes, I now see them as some of my greatest teachers.'The 2025 US Open is scheduled to take place from August 24 to September 7 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Despite these withdrawals, the tournament will feature top-ranked players such as World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, promising an exciting conclusion to the tennis season.- Ends

Premier League: Liverpool Beat Bournemouth In Curtain Raiser As Anfield Pays Tribute To Jota

Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah all found the back of the net for the Reds against the cherries in the season opener at Anfield. Holders Liverpool got their title defence off to a brilliant start as they opened the 2025/25 season of the Premier League with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Saturday. Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah all found the back of the net for the Reds against the cherries in the season opener at Anfield. Antoine Semenyo looked to have salvaged a point for Bournemouth by scoring twice after reporting an incident of racial abuse from a fan. His goals cancelled out strikes from Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo for the defending champions. On an emotional night as Anfield remembered Diogo Jota, Chiesa emerged as the unexpected hero. The injury-plagued Italian fired the home side back in front before Salah sealed the win. Liverpool's joy at celebrating a record-equalling 19th English top-flight title turned to tragedy during the off-season when forward Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car accident last month at the age of 28. During a minute's silence, fans held up a giant mosaic with the initials of Jota and Silva, who was also a footballer, and their shirt numbers in the Portuguese flag. 'The main emotion should be how moving the tribute for Diogo was," said Liverpool boss Arne Slot. 'It was all so impressive and powerful." Despite winning the title with four games to spare last season, Liverpool have undergone a significant transformation in the transfer market, spending close to £300 million ($407 million). Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong made their first competitive starts for the Reds. More signings could yet come, with Liverpool linked to a British transfer record move for Newcastle's Alexander Isak and interested in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. Bournemouth were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men less than 15 minutes in when Marcos Senesi clearly directed the ball out of Ekitike's path with his hand when the French striker had a clear run at goal, but VAR did not intervene. The game was briefly halted on the half-hour mark as Semenyo reported to referee Anthony Taylor that he had been subjected to racist abuse from a Liverpool supporter, who was removed from the stands by police at half-time. 'Totally unacceptable," said Bournemouth captain Adam Smith. 'Kind of in shock it happened in this day and age." Liverpool said in a statement that the incident is now the subject of an ongoing police investigation. Shortly after the resumption, Ekitike settled Liverpool's nerves by getting the break of the ball and slotting past Dorde Petrovic. Gakpo then coolly left two Bournemouth defenders on the ground and rolled into the bottom corner just after half-time. However, Slot's men have struggled to find the right balance in pre-season and in losing the Community Shield to Palace last weekend. A new-look slick attack could not compensate for wide-open defensive gaps on the counter-attack, and this was evident again. David Brooks broke the offside trap and squared for Semenyo to pull a goal back. The Ghanaian then capped his eventful evening with a remarkable equaliser. Semenyo collected possession just outside his own box, sprinted through a vacant Liverpool midfield, and fired into the bottom corner 13 minutes from time. Chiesa, rarely used by Slot in his debut season in England, became the unlikely hero when he pounced on a loose ball inside the Bournemouth box on 89 minutes. Salah then broke clear in stoppage time to score his customary goal in the opening game of the season and paid tribute to Jota by mimicking one of his goal celebrations. The Egyptian broke down in tears after full-time as a chant in Jota's name echoed from the stands. Donald Trump's biggest NFL blunder? Passing on the Cowboys before Jerry Jones turned them into a $12.8B empire

Donald Trump once declined to buy the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989 (Getty Images) President Donald Trump once waved off the chance to buy the Dallas Cowboys. Four decades later, that shrug reads like one of sports business's most expensive what-ifs. In 1984, when the franchise could be had for roughly $50 million, Donald Trump reportedly scoffed, saying he felt 'sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy' the team. Today, the Cowboys sit atop the NFL's value rankings at an estimated $12.8 billion—proof that the 'poor guy' turned into the richest brand in American sports. How a dismissed opportunity became a masterclass in brand building and media leverage The Cowboys haven't lifted a Lombardi in more than 25 years, but their business has boomed under Jerry Jones , who purchased the franchise in 1989 and rewrote the NFL's revenue playbook. From premium stadium experiences and relentless merchandising to global licensing and omnipresent media exposure, Dallas maximized every touchpoint. 'America's Team' became a 365-day content machine, drawing audiences well beyond wins and losses. The valuation gap tells the story. With the Cowboys at $12.8 billion and the next-closest NFL team—the Los Angeles Rams—far behind, Dallas's edge is rooted in cultural ubiquity as much as football results. In other words: championships are great; distribution, storytelling, and star power are scalable. The Jerry Jones era's paradox: commercial dominance amid on-field frustration Jerry Jones' stewardship hasn't been without friction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Wonosari: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Contract standoffs and the perception that some stars weren't rewarded quickly enough have fueled periodic unrest, most recently around headline names in Dallas. Yet the franchise's financial arc kept climbing, showing how a powerhouse brand can thrive even when playoff exits sting. Donald Trump's 1984 quip doubles as a timeless business lesson. Sports franchises are media companies wrapped in uniforms; their upside compounds with smart timing, infrastructure bets, and an owner willing to sell the vision daily. Jones did all three. The result: a team worth roughly 240 times that old price tag—and a cautionary tale about passing on undervalued cultural assets. In August 2025, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History opened an exhibit called 'Change Your Game'. The exhibit asks visitors if they think Lia Thomas competing on the women's team is fair or foul. It also explains how gender testing works in sports. This show got heat because sponsor Nike is involved, and fitness star Jillian Michaels called it out on CNN. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump asked for a full check of all Smithsonian exhibits ahead of the country's 250th birthday. Lia Thomas in Nike-funded Smithsonian exhibit sparks fairness debate Lia Thomas was on the University of Pennsylvania's women's swim team in early 2022. The 'Change Your Game' exhibit at the Smithsonian asks visitors to pick if her presence is 'fair or foul.' It also explains gender testing, like using cheek swabs to check for a Y chromosome, which World Athletics is starting to use to decide who can compete in women's events. Fitness influencer Jillian Michaels spoke about it on CNN and said, 'It's not complex. It's basic science. Is it fair to have biological men competing against biological women in sports? No, but why is this in the Smithsonian?' Outkick Sports and XX-XY Athletics also pointed out Nike's role. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If A Cat Bites Their Owner Heres What It Really Means Gloriousa Undo Dan Zaksheske from Outkick asked, 'Why does a company that claims to support and lift female athletes refuse to condemn males competing in women's sports?' He added, 'Unless, of course, Nike isn't really as interested in promoting women's sports as they are in promoting left-wing talking points.' That drew sharp criticism from conservatives who said the company talks about women's sports but supports an exhibit they find unfair. This all comes as President Donald Trump launched a review of Smithsonian exhibits. On August 12, 2025, the White House sent a letter asking for a 'comprehensive internal review' to make sure exhibits match a strong, united view of America and steer clear of anything divisive. That review includes the 'Change Your Game' exhibit in the National Museum of American History. Trump's team said they want to look at tone, how history is framed, and whether exhibits celebrate American ideals. Some civil rights leaders said this review could erase important stories in American history but that's a whole different story. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4.
